                  The Heart Takes Flight

Ode to White Rock, British Columbia, my home

                                                by Rowena Susan Wilcox

      I ambled the beach ...

      You soared the sky ...

We moved together... You and I !

Below speckled stones... lay at my feet...

Above clouds glistened like fresh- fallen snow !

It was a blustery day... and the "White Horses" * rolled high !

I beheld "Your Creation" and gazed and sighed !

The sky was now half blue ... half grey...

As though depicting the duality that day!

The Blue ... the Peace ... the Grey ... the Fight...

The Love ... the Life ... the Dark ... the Night !

But the sun shone through in spite of it all

       And lit the " Path "  I knew to be " True " !

       For " Love " will " Survive" ... and " Loneliness " be " Lost " !

       The " Sea gulls " and  " I " ... " Soar High ... Soar High " !

 [ *  " White Horses " : waves ]

          Happy 140th Birthday Bapu

We will not let the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi without paying our tribute to this great soul.

"Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth." Albert Einstein

Gandhi ~ man of peace Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2nd 1869 in Porbandar in Gujarat.

Known as 'Mahatma' (great soul), Gandhi was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule, and is widely considered the father of his country. His doctrine of nonviolent protest to achieve political and social progress has been hugely influential.

On January 30th 1948, he was assassinated in Delhi by a Hindu fanatic.

Throughout his life, Gandhi was voracious defender of peace through the principles of non-violence and non-cooperation. Was with them that Gandhi fought for all people in India live in harmony, cooperating with each other for a strong and united India.
The legacy of Gandhi is a reference to date worldwide. Cover of numerous magazines, the subject of studies, books and movies, some reference in many political speeches, street name in many cities in tribute statues, Indian on the ballots, and in museums and memorials, and notable absence among the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, Gandhi deserves to be celebrated and remembered! It is no coincidence, therefore, that one of only three national holidays in India is named after him.

See full size imageGandhi, helped lead his nation of India to freedom, by first uniting the people, who were of all different religions. Those being Muslim,Hindu and Sik. The people were the only way which they could fight the British. By uniting to create one strong force, which was the goal of freedom. If they weren't united then the British could easily defeat them, which was what they had been doing to the Indians all along. They used their weaknesses to take power.
The biggest thing that Gandhi was known for was fighting using civil disobediences. He never encouraged his people to fight back. He taught them that violence was not the answer to solving their problems. Fighting using civil disobedience made the British look really bad. They tortured them, killed and arrested the Indians. After a while the Indian people grew tired and started to fight back. One of the major things that symbolized the outbreak of violence was the massacre at the field which killed many people, including children and women. The people responded using violence. All over India reports of Indians killing or beating guards came through. Gandhi became very disappointed. From the beginning all he ever taught his people was to protest using peace. He responded to these outbreaks of violence by going on a hunger strike.
Soon reports of Ghandi dying, scared the people into stopping the violence. Ghandi's acts of civil disobedience, formed the center of many civil leaders in America. One being DR. Martin Luther King Jr. Ghandi became the voice of the people. Do to his leadership and courage, India is now free. Of course it would have happened eventually but thanks to Ghandi, this happened using non violence. Which later spoke more than words. At the end Ghandi died, fighting for what he knew was right. Ironically, one of his own people killed him. Not the British but a Hindu extremist. Because of Ghandi India is what it is today.

Help Save 150 American Buffalo!

We’ve only got weeks to go, but we’ve done it before, and with your help,
we will do it again!

In 2003, In Defense of Animals (IDA) was contacted by Catalina Island citizens, concerned that 105 buffalo were being sent to auction. You responded to our appeal and, together, we saved and successfully relocated all 105 auction-bound buffalo from Catalina Island, off the coast of California, to protected Native American land in South Dakota. The dramatic rescue on barges across 23 miles of ocean, then 1,800 miles by highway to South Dakota garnered international media. You can view video of that rescue here.

That buffalo relocation was simply amazing. IDA members and staff who participated cried with joy and astonishment at the beauty and magnitude of what we accomplished. If you missed out on the opportunity to be a part of that effort, you now have another chance.

IDA now has the opportunity to rescue and relocate 150 more buffalo. We want these magnificent creatures to join their cousins living safely in Standing Rock, South Dakota!

But we need your help!
We need to raise $35,000 to get the job done. I am writing today to ask that you help make our dream a reality. Click here to donate.

Around the world, buffalo are considered the symbol of the American pioneering spirit. Our traditional songs glorify them and our folklore reveals their importance to the fabric of our nation. Can you imagine any telling of the American story not including buffalo?

But what are buffalo doing on a Pacific Ocean island anyway?

Fourteen buffalo were brought to Santa Catalina Island for a 1925 silent film, “The Vanishing American.” The buffalo population soon grew, and visitors to the island have been enchanted by their magnificence ever since.

The Catalina Island Conservancy was formed in 1975 to preserve the land, its native animals and plants. Because the buffalo are non-native to the island they have periodically been sent to auction on the mainland. But, thanks to caring members like you, IDA is changing that!

In 2003, when we successfully relocated 105 at-risk bison, that whole paradigm changed. Now that we’ve shown how they can be saved, they must be saved.

The buffalo we rescued in 2003 are doing amazingly well. They gain 150 pounds during the winter months and grow even thicker coats. They no longer climb mountains to graze for grass. Many great-great grandchildren have been born. Thanks to you, these very special animals have a safe home today.

We are gearing up for our next amazing rescue a much larger group of buffalo this time. Will you be a part of it?

If you can help us fund the relocation of the buffalo from Catalina Island once again - on barges across 23 miles of ocean and then 1,800 by highway to South Dakota - IDA has a guarantee that the buffalo will be allowed to roam free and not be hunted or harmed in any way!

So please be as generous as you can, as quickly as you can. Then, when you see the heartwarming transport unfolding on television, you can say “I helped make that happen!”

For the buffalo,

Elliot M. Katz, DVM
President, IDA

APPEAL FOR M99

Almost a year ago, some of you very kindly responded to our appeal for funds to buy M99, the tranquilizer required in snare removals.  We were able to purchase 12 vials of the drug and thanks to those who assisted with funds, many animals have been saved from an agonizing, lingering death.

The "Father of Mana", Oliver is still thriving after his wounded leg was treated with the help of M99. We received these photos of him from Neville and Yvonne Edwards who saw him in July this year.

We would like to thank the Kariba residents for their efforts in preserving the wildlife, in particular, Colin Horsley, Steve Kok, Geoff Blythe and the Clements family.

In June this year, Colin Horsley used his own aircraft to fly to Mana Pools to collect Norman Monks to do a snare removal on a zebra in Kariba. The cost of this exercise was over USD1 000, which included fuel for the plane, landing, enroute and departure fees. He flew Norman back to Mana Pools after the snare removal was done and we would like to thank Colin most sincerely for this wonderful gesture. Thanks also to Norman Monks who had done several snare removals in the Kariba area and to Geoff Blythe who tracks down the snared animals and organizes for the snares to be removed.

The poaching and snaring situation in Kariba is becoming critical. There are currently an elephant, 2 buffalo, and 4 zebras walking around with snares embedded in their flesh and Geoff Blythe has reported that National Parks have recently retrieved over 100 wire snares from the bush in the Charara area and about the same number from the Mopani Bay area.

The Clements family in Kariba have been playing an important role in the preservation of the wildlife in Kariba. Brice Clements does patrols in his microlite to find the locations of the biggest concentrations of animals and then reports back to National Parks who go in on foot and scour the areas for snares.

Steve Kok of Charara is also doing an amazing job of trying to combat the poaching problem. He transports National Parks scouts to various areas to look for snares and supplies them with rations, fuel and outboard oil. The ZCTF donated $200 to him last month to try and help him with funds and we are hoping to be able to assist him on a monthly basis.

Our stocks of M99 are now running very low. We have ordered another 10 vials and we are trying to raise USD3 275 to pay for it. If anyone is in a position to assist us with funds, we would be extemely grateful. We have a proforma invoice and if anyone would like to see it, please contact us. Our contact details are below.

RHINO POACHING

It is common knowledge that the rhino poaching situation is critical. At the turn of the century, there were over 50 black rhinos in Midlands Conservancy and we were shocked to hear, about 2 or 3 years ago that there were only 21 left. The latest report is even more disturbing. It is alleged that there are now only 5 rhinos left there.

We have received these photos of 2 rhinos killed this year. In one photo, you can see the AK47 bullet shells that were found in the vicinity of the carcass. It is believed that organized poaching syndicates, involving certain members of the government, police and defence forces  are responsible for the deaths of the rhino.

Save America's Wolves

Dear Friends,

Thank you for taking the time to send a message to President Obama. Together, we’re a powerful voice in the fight to protect Idaho’s wolves and other imperiled wildlife.

Make sure President Obama hears your message! Call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111 and deliver this simple message:

“My name is ___________ and I’m calling from ________ to urge President Obama to restore Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana.

Americans have worked too hard to rescue these wolves from the brink of extinction to allow officials in Idaho and Montana to eliminate more than two-thirds of the region's wolves through hunting and other methods.”

Please let us know you called, so we can better target our communications to the White House.

Call the White House ! Please accept my gratitude for your efforts today. With your help, we can stop Idaho’s deadly wolf hunt, save the lives of wolves and ensure a brighter future for these magnificent animals.

Best Regards,

Rodger and the Defenders of Wildlife Team

Slaverymap.org,

http://www.slaverymap.org/

a wiki-style database of international forced labor and sexual slavery cases has hit a major milestone with the post of its 500th case. These cases are a glimpse into the dark world of involuntary servitude, a situation into which more than 27 million people find themselves confined. The website, a digital community outreach created by the Not For Sale Campaign (NFSC), allows users to post documented cases of slavery from any computer with a link to the Internet. These cases are then vetted by NFSC staff and used to educate the politicians, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, educators and the general public about this hidden crime.

"Thousands of cases of human trafficking are in existence and Slaverymap.org is our key vehicle of bringing those cases into the public domain," said David Batstone, founder and president of NFSC. "Through thissite, we are allowing people to transform from bystander to investigator as they research cases of modern-day slavery in their own backyard. Many of the listings on the site point to cases in the United States."
Slaverymap.org was soft-launched in mid 2008 to fill one of the key gaps in the battle against modern-day slavery: the lack of information. NFSC began dedicating resources and personnel to the project in late 2008 and in 2009, data collection for the site has increased dramatically. With partners in countries such as Nepal, Uganda, Cambodia, Peru, Thailand, and Ghana, NFSC has investigators working to bring the cases from the files of international agencies into public view. NFSC staff expect to see the site surpass 1,000 cases logged by the end of 2009.
