Burning barrels are a common feature of many farmyards, cottages, and other rural properties. Unfortunately the practice of burning trash at home results in an abundance of pollutants, especially dioxins and furans, being released into the atmosphere. Though it may be less convenient, taking your waste to your local garbage dump is a better solution. Please remember to recycle as well....

Though your cat may like to venture outside for an evening stroll, you may be releasing a feline terror onto the streets.... Two cats and their offspring have the potential to produce 420,000 kittens over a seven-year period, many of them ending up feral. (Source: Humane Society of Canada) Cats are very efficient predators, they were first domesticated to control rodent populations. If every domestic cat were to kill only one bird in a year, the total would represent a disaster greater than any oil spill. Putting a bell on your cat's collar won't help either. Cats that are allowed to wander are subject to a wide variety of dangers. Disease, injury, and predation shorten the life of many cats. The best solution is to always keep your cat indoors, or to create a secure outdoor enclosure for your cat to spend time in....

People are always dropping off their unwanted cats at our farm. The truth is, farms aren't always a safe place for cats.

I've come across former housecats that couldn't find food or water by themselves. They were completely traumatized by being abandoned. Cats often drink antifreeze or other harmful substances when they cannot find a ready source of water. Some farmers have poison baits set out to control rodents. If the cat eats a poisoned animal, it will be poisoned as well.

When it's cold out, cats like to curl up on the tractor engines. They have a block heater which warms and circulates the oil in the engine. When the engine is started, the cats are often killed.

Farm dogs are often not tolerant of new cats. They will chase off newcomers, sometimes killing them if they catch them.

We have had over thirty cats on our farm some days from people dropping them off. We do our best to take care of the cats and find them good homes. Some farmers don't. There are all kinds of people out there.

The hazards for a farm cat are the same as for the farmer, or worse. Farming is one of the most hazardous occupations.

If someone you know is considering dropping off their unwanted cats at a nearby farm, please try to talk them out of it. The shock of roughing it on the farm is too much for many housecats....
