2010 anticipates to be an exciting year for all of us, especially by exploring new possibilities.  Although this doesn't directly apply to me, I wanted to share this new program with all of you.
Started by a few Jewish high school students from Manhattan, New York, it seems that Veguary will spark an increasing trend of awareness in our society.  One day, while I was on Facebook, reading my newsfeed, I saw that one of my friends, along with 36 others, joined the Veguary group.  Curious as to what this was, I took a click.  Shortly after, I joined the group because I felt it was a good way to spread the message about caring not only for animals, but for our health and for the environment. Although I am already a vegetarian, I pledged anyways, in order to show my support.  Being a vegetarian has made me realize the horrors that go on in this world and how it would be nice if more people chose to adapt this lifestyle. I have wished this ever since I became a vegetarian--a little more than 1.5 years ago--shortly after my 15th birthday.  However, as time has progressed, I have realized that vegetarianism/veganism is not a possibility, or a reality for that matter, for everyone.  I have influenced my family in that they also eat more vegetarian dishes and boycott restaurants that serve veal, however, I have also realized that being completely vegetarian may not be an option for some of my family, who have certain dietary needs. Even though they (as well as others) may not be able to adapt to a veggie lifestyle, I believe that they can still do their part to make a difference in our world.  For example, they can buy kosher meat, boycott restaurants that serve veal, etc. Which is why I wanted to let all of you know about Veguary. Basically, you can pledge to be a Vegetarian, Pescetarian, or a Reductarian for the entire month of February.  It's not a permanent commitment whatsoever.  I encourage all of you to take a look, if you haven't already.  The website is www.veguary.org. And here's a little bit about it:
"Veg•u•ary (noun): Veguary refers to the second month of the year, in which those enthusiastic about fighting global warming, improving their health, or making a positive difference in the world commit to reducing or eliminating their meat intake" (source: veguary.org).
