8/31/07 Watch Our Video We have a video up on you tube with pictures from Peru: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11DiUyxPqo8
From The Field: I am Thea Martin (volunteer) working with Gerald Pool and Marcia Maxwell - all three of us from California and have hooked up with ASPPA. We have now responded to Ica, Chincha and now Pisco (Pisco 3 times). A team of vet techs and vets are from Canada via Amazoncares are here with us and we are all together responding as a team. The vets take care of spay, neuter, vaccinations and we three are feeding and watering animals. The department of health (Ministries of Health) had two meetings with us and are excited about a larger longer response that we have indicated we would very much like to push for. They are very much in need of food, water, vet supplies, volunteer vets and care givers in all three larger cities mentioned as well as some smaller towns. The department of Heath is excited about the possibility that a large organized response would be a model for South America - especially the education part about pet care and over population issue. Good News: One of our US Animal organizations contacted me today for contact information. They are going to go in with a DART (Disaster Response and Assessment Team) which includes a member who is from Peru and lives in the US. (would love to use their name but will wait for permission).
HURRICANE ALERT! PLEASE CROSSPOST! CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
ARNO (Animal Rescue New Orleans) is on ALERT as of 6pm CST Wednesday, August 27, by Homeland Security. This is a call for all willing and able-bodied volunteers to be on ALERT and ready to be in New Orleans no later than Saturday a.m.
This is a call for pre-disaster ARNO volunteers to assist with pet/people evacuation, for residents of Orleans Parish who have pets with no transportation out of the city. There were an estimated 50,000 (pre-Katrina) citizens with pets who needed this service. The current number is approximated at 25,000. This includes 'special needs' humans with their pets.
The alert is also in effect for Volunteers needed PRE- and POST-PET/PEOPLE EVACUATION at ARNO's shelter in Jefferson. ARNO's evac plans are to take effect AFTER evacuation of parish residents. IF there is need for the shelter to evacuate, we will be using state highways out of town, not the interstate, so contraflow will not effect our evacuation.
Anyone who can volunteer for either or both situations, please send an EMAIL to disastervolunteer@ cox.net (disastervolunteer @ cox.net) Include your name, address, city/state, contact phone (cell), and area of service preferred, i.e. animal handler, animal care, clerical/processing , logistics/communica tions, driver/w or w/o truck/van, and/or any special skills.
Volunteers will receive all updates as soon as we have them via email. If you are coming from out of town via airline service, we will pay particular attention to make sure you are alerted in the case of any cancellation due to change of course of TS Gustav, including by cell phone. Remember you can also fly into Baton Rouge, LA, 90 miles northwest of NOLA.
If you can come, or are here for the Katrina Memorial festivities, please know that, AT THIS TIME, the city is preparing to be evacuated and we will conduct the pet/people evacuation at least 72 hours before landfall with the Louisiana SPCA. Since ARNO has decided (because of our position on the outskirts of Jefferson Parish) to evacuate, in effect, last... we may be able to avoid evacuation if the storm's 36-hour out prediction has it making landfall east of Louisiana. If the storm is predicted at 36-hours out to be west of Louisiana, it may still mean evacuation because we will be on the wet side of the storm, i.e. gulf and lake waters drawn into the city overwhelming drainage facilities if accompanied by large amounts of rain from the storm.
God bless us all, keep the animals and the people safe!
p.s. please solicit fellow animal lovers for even a small donation to help us with preparatory expenses, i.e. gas, food, and extra supplies.
