Abnormal ear noises, ear ringing, buzzing, roaring, and pulsitile sounds are sometimes perceived when no sound is present and is medically called tinnitus.
Tinnitus can arise in any section of the ear.
Tinnitus is often accompanied by hearing loss.
Causes of Ringing in Ears
---  *Meniere's Disease
---  Ear infection
---  Fluid in the ears
---  Medications (both Prescription and Non-prescription, notably aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (**NSAIDs)
---  Aging (***Presbycusis)
---  Ear trauma (such as from the noise of planes, firearms, or loud music)
---  Rarely, aneurysm or an acoustic neuroma (a benign tumour on the acoustic nerve).

***Presbycusis: Age-related hearing loss with gradually progressive inability to hear, especially high frequency sounds. Presbycusis most often occurs in both ears. Because the loss of hearing is so gradual, people with presbycusis may not realize that their hearing is diminishing. They may have trouble distinguishing and understanding conversation in a noisy setting.

**NSAID: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
commonly prescribed for the inflammation of arthritis and other body tissues, e.g. tendinitis, bursitis. 
NSAIDs include aspirin, indomethacin (Indocin), ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxen (Naprosyn), piroxicam (Feldene), and nabumetone (Relafen).

*Meuniere's disease: Also called idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops.
It is a disorder of the flow of fluids of the inner ear. Cause is unknown.
