Note from Doctor Who fan, Jenny: "While this article pooh-poohs the new doctor, I'm certain it will all be fine... just get it started!!!"

From Doctor Who's new look branded a fashion failure - TV & Radio - Entertainment:

The new-look Doctor Who has been given the thumbs down by the British press.  British actor Matt Smith, 26, stepped into the time lord's shoes and began filming his first episodes for the popular sci-fi series in South Wales on Monday

But while fans were thrilled to know they were a step closer to having the Doctor back on TV, the reaction to Smith's choice of outfit was subdued. Sporting a checked blazer with leather elbow patches, maroon bow tie, rolled up black jeans, braces and black boots, Smith's fashion ensemble was likened to that of an elderly teacher or university lecturer.

The Sun tabloid said Smith looked "more like a geography teacher on a field trip than a time lord battling aliens. The latest Doc seemed to have travelled back in time to the place fashion forgot."

The Daily Mail described Smith's outfit as "preppy", saying it was a "far cry from current Doctor David Tennant's sharp striped suits, flowing coats and Converse trainers. The old-fashioned look has echoes of Patrick Troughton, who wore a floppy bow tie as the second Doctor from 1966 to 1969."

Smith is the 11th actor to play the Doctor. He replaces the popular Tennant, whose final episodes will be screened in Britain in late 2009. Tennant's Doctor will undergo the Doctor's traditional "regeneration" process to emerge in the form of Smith when the new 13-part series airs in early 2010.

Smith said he felt "very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show". "The scripts are brilliant - I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."
