Leave Sharks Alone, Says Tim Winton

submitted by Jenny taken from theage.com.au
Tim Winton - the award-winning writer and avid marine conservationist has called for an end to what he's calling our "jihad" against sharks. "Australians have an almost supernatural fear and hatred of sharks," he says.
The hammerhead is already 89% gone.

Join me in celebrating Animal Action Week

"Under One Sky" Leonardo DiCaprio with IFAW Join me in taking action
for animals

Imagine a day in a world without animals... An ocean with no life beneath the waves... Skies where the only wings are on planes...
Animals have fascinated and inspired us since the earliest years of human civilisation. They are an integral part of the web of life. Yet today, animals and their vital habitat face more threats than ever before.
That's why I'm thrilled to be a part of this year's Animal Action theme, "
Under One Sky". One of the world's largest environmental education programmes, this year's Animal Action Week highlights the importance of protecting biodiversity, habitat and ecosystems and I want you to be a part of it with me.

Not a Pretty Picture
Whaling ships armed with exploding harpoons hunt whales in defiance of international treaties ... baby elephants are orphaned and left to die when their entire family is wiped out by poachers for ivory trinkets ... and as the icecaps continue to melt, polar bear habitats shrink, leaving them to starve or drown as they search in vain for their next meal.
It's not a pretty picture, and certainly not the way we want to envision our shared world. So what can we do to protect animals around the world and in our own backyards? How can we solve the urgent problems threatening the planet we all call home?

Turn Awareness into Action
Like me, IFAW is committed to saving animals and habitat by educating the environmental leaders of tomorrow and encouraging them to act now to forge a better future for animals and people. You can join me in these 3 easy actions:

  • Visit ifaw.org/animalaction_ca to learn more about Animal Action Week, the largest animal-focused educational event in the world;
  • Take the Habitat Protection Pledge to help protect the homes that are vital to animals everywhere;
  • And spread the word by forwarding this email to your family and friends.

Animals, like people, need a home that provides food, water, shelter and space. It's our responsibility to protect animals and our planet's vital ecosystems if we want to leave a better world for future generations. I hope you'll join me.

Sincerely,
Leonardo DiCaprio

HELP STOP JAPAN WHALING
Help stop whaling, bring Japan into the fold

Join the mass online protest against whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Create your own electronic whale out of virtual origami paper, and send it "swimming" with a personal message to the Prime Minister of Japan.
Click here to join the protest and send a whale

.

In just over a month, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meets in Chile. Japan will be pushing hard for approval to resume full-scale commercial whaling.  We'll be delivering all the origami whales to the Japanese embassy in Canberra, highlighting them in the media, and showing them to IWC delegates in Chile.
 .
Meanwhile, Greenpeace has released explosive evidence of corruption in the whaling program - where whale meat is being stolen and sold on the black market.
.
The scandal - resulting from a 3-month undercover investigation by our team in Japan - has made the front pages of newspapers across Japan and brought the entire whaling program into further disrepute Increasingly, the Japanese public is concerned about their taxes subsidising an aging whaling fleet conducting fake science to justify a hunt for whale meat few want to eat.
.
Now is the moment to increase the swell of international outrage about whaling with our "Origami whales" and bring Japan into the fold!
.
Click to make your origami whale today!

Thanks for your activism,
.
