1957 - Apartheid in Arkansas, USA: National Guardsmen were ordered to prevent black students from attending an all-white school.
1957 - The Ford Motor Company introduces the ill-fated Edsel

1972 - Munich Olympic Games: Nine Israeli athletes being held hostage are killed in a bungled rescue attempt during the Games.

Australian Explorers
1840 - Edward John Eyre names 'Mt Hopeless'- Eyre aimed to find a way through the Australian continent from south to north, but after leaving Adelaide he encountered salt lake after salt lake. Each time he attempted to go around a salt lake, he found his way barred by yet another. Eyre climbed a peak which gave him a vista of shimmering salt lakes in every direction. He named that peak "Mt Hopeless".

Australian History
1922 - Henry Lawson died - one of Australia's best-known fiction writers of the colonial period. Most of his works dwelt on the Australian bush, depicting the difficult conditions of life on dry, dusty outback stations and in bush towns. He did not romanticise life in the bush and his humour was dry and sardonic. 1984 -"Milperra Massacre" -Fathers' Day, Sydney. A battle between rival biker gangs. Seven people were killed, including an innocent 14yo girl.

1666 - The Great Fire of London begins. 
1945 - Japan signs an unconditional surrender, officially ending WWII.
2009 - Onam Festival in Kerala, India -Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam (read more here)
