Give Women Access to Credit
Give Women Access to Credit - The Petition Site
...Women comprise 70% of the world's poor, even though an increasing number are the primary breadwinners in their families.
...Because they are poor, women have less access to credit and thus can't invest in ways to increase their income to better provide for their children. Microfinance programs combat poverty, especially for women, by providing financial services for the poor. Raising women's incomes have incredible effects. Their children get a healthier diet, and a chance to go to school, expanding their lifetime opportunities.
Enabling women to earn a better income is the first step to breaking the viscous cycle of poverty. Tell Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to focus on programs that lift women out of poverty.
My thoughts: Women are very often left raising children alone, trying to provide good, safe homes, food, clothing, education. The majority of farmers of the world are women. Too little support, including financial, goes to women.
Men very often have other agendas, no matter what country you examine. The negative effect of providing predominately men with loans means promoting war, power games, gambling, drinking and the toys of men's egoes (e.g. cars, guns).

Petition: Equal Pay for Equal Work!
Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: AAUW (American Association of University Women)
On average, women in the U.S. continue to earn only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. Just one year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues do, even when they work in the same job. Decades of earning lower wages result in significantly lower Social Security benefits, retirement incomes, and pensions, leaving women with less money to retire on.
The Paycheck Fairness Act, a much-needed update to the 46-year-old Equal Pay Act, would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal enforcement efforts. Without the Paycheck Fairness Act, women will continue to be silenced in the workplace - prohibited from asking about their employer’s wage practices or talking about their own wages with coworkers without the fear of being fired, which prevents many women from discovering they’re being discriminated against in the first place!
This recession makes pay equity even more important.
With women now making up half of the workforce and more and more families relying on a woman’s paycheck to make ends meet, ensuring that women are paid fairly is even more critical.
Urge your Senator to support the Paycheck Fairness Act today!

Thousand of 'hunting' tourists from Europe and the USA travel to South Africa to bring home dead animals instead of photos as souvenirs.
Canned Hunting
The most extreme variety of trophy hunting is “Canned Hunting”...
...the animals are locked up in a cage and then simply shot.
Born to be killed – Lion hunting in South Africa
The lions are bred on farms and hand-raised, so they aren't very shy of humans. Anyone can hunt lions in South Africa – a hunting licence or proven hunting experience is not usually necessary. This means that many lions experience an agonising death.
For trophy hunting in South Africa, lions are bred on more than 160 farms, usually raised by hand and accustomed to humans.
In the last six years, the number of farm lions has risen by 250%.
Today, more than 3,500 captive animals are threatened with the same fate. From 2006-2008 lion shootings in S'Africa has tripled:
 - 322 lions were shot in 2006
 - 700 lions were shot in 2007
 - 1,050 lions were shot in 2008
These figures are confirmed by the export of lion trophies.
Aww, so cute!
Many of the young animals start life as tourist attractions. Unwitting tourists pay to pat the lion cubs, take photos and take them for walks...they don't realise they are supporting a horrific industry.
Then shoot...
When the lions reach the 'trophy' age (4-7 yo) they are offered to wealthy clients for shooting.
'Trophies' include:
 - Male Lions (€25,000 to €45,000)
 - Lionesses (€5,000 or less)
 - Some farms also offer Lion Cubs and Tigers (even though Tigers are not indigenous to South Africa.)
Experts estimate that there are only 23,000 lions living in the wild on the African continent.
 - Sign the petition asking for a ban and help FOUR PAWS influence South African decision makers!
 - Refuse to visit any breeding of hunting farms.
 - Avoid tourist attractions in which young animals are exposed to direct contact with humans.
 - Inform your travel agent, friends and family about South Africa’s lion industry’s background and Canned Hunting.
 - Be careful in the choice of jobs or work experience in South Africa (Volunteering).
 - Make sure that you are not giving your support to institutions that raise lions and other animals by hand for commercial purposes.

If you've never heard of interstitial cystitis, you are not alone.
From What you don't know about your bladder could hurt you:
   It is pronounced in-ter-stish-uhl sĭ-stī’tĭs -- IC for short. Between three and eight million women, and one to three million men in the United States have it. That's a lot of people, but exact numbers are hard to come by because there is no single definitive test and it is often mistaken for other disorders. Diagnosis is made only after excluding other urinary/bladder conditions. The cause is not known.
  IC is a chronic, often painful condition involving pressure and discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region, associated with urinary frequency and urgency, which can lead to disruption of normal activities. When health care providers are not properly educated about IC, diagnosis and appropriate treatment can be delayed for years, severely impacting quality of life. That's exactly why health care providers and patients need information and education -- and that's where you can help.
Please lend your support to IC patients by asking the Labor-HHS-Appropriations Subcommittee to provide $660,000 for IC Education and Awareness Program in their FY11 bill.
For the past five years, Congress has provided funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to promote IC education and awareness. The CDC program supports much-needed healthcare provider and patient education, as well as information sharing between patients, healthcare providers, and researchers. Unfortunately, President Obama's FY11 budget request recommends the elimination of this program.
Please urge Congress to restore federal funding for a critical interstitial cystitis (IC) program.
The Cause: The exact cause is still unknown, but several factors that may contribute to the development of IC.
--bladder trauma, such as from pelvic surgery;
--bladder overdistention;
--pelvic floor muscle dysfunction;
--autoimmune disorder;
--bacterial infection (cystitis);
--primary neurogenic inflammation;
--spinal cord trauma;
--the possible relationship between IC and abuse (sexual, physical, and childhood sexual) is being debated after different studies yielded conflicting results.
The Symptoms: Symptoms differ from person to person, but common symptoms include:
--frequent urination -- up to 60 times a day in the most severe cases;
--sense of urgency for urination, sometimes accompanied by pain, pressure, or spasms;
--pain in the lower abdominal, urethral, or vaginal area;
--pain associated with intercourse; men may experience testicular, scrotal and/or perineal pain, and painful ejaculation.
The Treatment: Most doctors and patients find that a combination of treatments works best. It is a process of trial and error that includes:
--oral medication;           --topical medication;
--bladder retraining;        --hydrodistention;
--physical therapy;         --bladder instillations;
--dietary supplements;    --electrical nerve stimulation;
--surgery;    --complementary and alternative treatments.
