RECIPE 1 - Simple, inexpensive, odour-eliminating, tooth-whitening--from Organic Body Care Recipes (Storey, 2007) by Stephanie Tourles
INGREDIENTS
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon sea salt, finely ground
1 drop peppermint, spearmint, sweet orange, clove, or cinnamon bark essential oil
A few drops tap water
_____________________
Combine ingredients in a small bowl and mix them thoroughly until a smooth, thick paste forms. The paste shouldn’t be too runny. Use as you would regular commercial toothpaste
Notes:
(a) Avoid table salt as you'll end up with fluoride.
(b) One of the commenters (Beth H.) said she omits salt altogether but still finds the result effective.

RECIPE 2

Make Your Own Natural Herbal Toothpaste
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup Baking Soda
1/2 cup bentonite clay powder
11/2 teaspoon Myrrh powder
1 teaspoon dried Raspberry Leaf powder
1 teaspoon dried White Oak Bark powder
1 teaspoon herbs of your choice (Fennel, Peppermint, Spearmint, in powder form)
Favourite glycerine tincture, Cinnamon (germicide) Fennel, Clove (kills germs & stops pain) Cayenne (prevent gum disease, very hot & spicy though).
Pour the Baking Soda and Bentonite clay powder into a medium-size mixing bowl. Add all the dry ingredients, including the Myrrh powder, to the Baking Soda/Clay mixture. Mix well with a wire whisk. Add favourite tinctures to a paste form, again mixing well. Place a clean cover over the bowl, covering it completely. Let sit overnight. The next morning, mix well again, add more glycerine tincture if necessary.
Yield: about 1 cup. Store in a wide-mouthed jar.

MORE NOTES
-from Care2 member
Rhonda (All-Natural-Herbs)
(a) "Sodium Hydroxide, mica are also also in some toothpastes. they can claim 'natural' because these are natural ingredients, however they are caustic... Do not swallow...contact physician immediately"
(b) Baking soda reduces the acid level in the mouth. (High acid creates tooth decay)
(c) Myrrh powder for prevention of periodontal disease
