Chile Earthquake: Organizations Call for Solidarity
In 2004 Global Justice Ecology Project traveled to Chile for meetings with
Mapuche organizations fighting the devastating impacts of industrial timber
plantations. The outcome of the meetings was the formation of a partnership
between GJEP and the Mapuche group Konapewman. In 2005 we returned to the
region and toured the coastal areas mentioned in the communique below, which
were threatened by effluent from a pulp mill.
We completely support the request for support in this communique. Please help
if you can.
Temuco, March 3, 2010
Civil society organizations call for solidarity and are coordinating an effort
to bring help to coastal communities in the region.
Various civil society organizations of the IX Region (south-central Chile) are
coordinating efforts to bring aid to the most affected communities in last
Saturday's earthquake, particularly coastal communities affected by the
resulting tsunamis. This solidarity action is to be carried out in coordination
with the Indigenous and local authorities of the affected communities
After gathering information about the affected areas, this collective of civil
society and Mapuche organizations will begin by coordinating direct support to
the hardest hit communities of Tolten, Saavedra and Tirua, where government aid
has not yet arrived.
This collective of organizations considers it urgent to bring support to these
and other communities, and in particular to support the rebuilding of local
organizations to ensure local capacity in distributing aid and in
reconstructing the communities.
We call on all organizations and citizens to contact the Observatorio
Ciudadano, coordinating organization in Temuco. A bank account will be
available as of this Friday March 5th to receive donations that will be used to
purchase and distribute non-perishable food items, hygiene products, batteries,
sleeping bags, radios, etc., to affected communities. The first caravan will
leave Temuco for the affected communities this Friday at 09:00 hrs.
The Observatorio can be contacted for more information about how to help:
Observatorio land line: (International calls dial 011 56 45) 213 963.
Cell phone: (International calls dial 011 56) 8900 firstname.lastname@example.org
We appreciate all efforts for the diffusion of this message and are thankful
for any type of solidary support.

If you have a dog ... PLEASE read
this and send it on. If you don't
have a dog, please pass along
to friends who do.

This week I had the first case in history of raisin
toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was
a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix
that ate half a canister of raisins sometime
between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He
started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking
about 1 AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't
call my emergency service until 7 AM.
I had heard somewhere about raisins AND
grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't
seen any formal paper on the subject. We
had her bring the dog in immediately. In the
meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet,
and the doctor there was like me - had heard
something about it, but... Anyway, we
contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison
Control Center and they said to give IV fluids
at 1 & 1/2 times maintenance and watch the
kidney values for the next 48-72 hours.
The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was
already at 32 (normal less than 27) and
creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal).
Both are monitors of kidney function in the
bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and
started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values
at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine
over 7 with no urine production after a liter of
fluids. At that point I felt the dog was in acute
renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a
urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight
as well as overnight care.
He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet
and his renal values continued to increase
daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a
diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting
medications and they still couldn't control his
vomiting. Today his urine output decreased
again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was
at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his
blood pressure, which had been staying around
150, skyrocketed to 220 ... He continued to vomit
and the owners elected to Euthanize.
This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners
who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please
alert everyone you know who has a dog of this
very serious risk.
Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could
be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes
or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any
exposure should give rise to immediate concern.
Onions, chocolate, cocoa, avocadoes and macadamia nuts can
be fatal, too.
Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends
who do. This is worth passing on to them.
Confirmation from Snopes about the above .....

||Memorial (for the deceased)|
||St Louis, Missouri United States|
Dear MoveOn member,
Earlier this week, we received incredibly sad news. Melanie Shouse, a devoted MoveOn Council leader in St. Louis and tireless health care advocate, passed away after a battle with breast cancer.
Melanie was a true fighter. While she was involved in many issues with MoveOn, she always said health care was her heart—and even after treatments began, she came to every single health care rally, speaking out about the injustices she was suffering under our broken health care system.
Melanie's story is a painful reminder of why we need to fight as hard as we can to get real health care reform passed, now.
Our friends at TrueMajority are gathering messages of condolence to deliver to Melanie's family this weekend. The email they sent is below. To add your message, just click this link.
Thanks for all that you do.
–Kat, Keauna, Ilya, Lenore, and the rest of the team
Our friend has died.
Melanie Shouse has died.
Melanie was a small business owner from Missouri battling stage four breast cancer, who also had to fight with insurance companies who didn't want to pay for her treatment. She didn't take that lying down—she spoke out, she protested, she became a leader in the movement for a more just health care system. Maybe you remember the video thank-you she sent to you and other TrueMajority members last October for being part of that movement.1
The cancer took Melanie's life last week. To her family, we can only express our deepest regret and sympathy. If you'd like to send your sympathy as well, you can sign our guest book, and we'll deliver your messages to the family this weekend.
We're sorry we didn't get health care reform done sooner. Sorry that insurance coverage isn't more affordable and accessible for millions of Americans who need it. Mostly, we're sorry to lose our friend.
But Melanie would not have wanted us to stop fighting for reform. In fact, she asked that those attending her memorial service wear their activist t-shirts. So tomorrow, in lieu of flowers, let's deliver our condolences, put on a campaign t-shirt and remember why we fight and who we are fighting for.
