ANOTHER STORY!!!!
Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label
, upon further investigation on the companies web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs.

Cocoa Mulch
is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of th e dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

True information about the mulch can be found here -
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoa.htm
This site gives the following information:

Cocoa Mulch,
which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theo bromine'.

It is lethal to dogs and cats. I
t smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. J ust a word of caution check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theo bromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Hi Everyone
I received this letter today from Caroline Cody at ABC 24 (News Station).  She was kind enough to forward this very sad and upsetting news to me from Geinger Morgan the Exectuive Director of the Human Society of Memphis and Shelby County.
Since many of you asked...I thought I would give you this tragic update.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry to report that we had to have Mack euthanized on Saturday, May 31st. Mack did not have any feeling in his lower back and back legs which allowed him to contort and twist his body in ways that allowed him to fracture one of his back legs.

Since Mack was approx. 5 months old his bones were still growing and developing. However, his bones were not getting strong, so they were very soft and brittle. In order for his bones to become strong and healthy they would need to bear weight and be stressed just the same way our bones become healthy. Mack could not and would never bear weight on his back legs, so he would continue to hurt himself.

We've always adopted the philosophy of "Do No Harm" when deciding on a treatment plan for one of our injured, sick or abused animals. We had to put that philosophy into action where Mack was concerned. It was not an easy decision to make, however it was the best decision for Mack.

I want to thank you for your support and prayers for Mack. I especially want to thank Dr. Blackburn and the entire staff at Gentle Care Animal Hospital . While Mack was in their care he was well taken care of and severely spoiled rotten. Everyone at Gentle Care fell in love with Mack and would stop what they were doing every time he had something to say to them, which was often. They gave him treats, toys, kisses and hugs. This was probably the only time in his short life that he experienced love.

I played with Mack for awhile before he went to sleep for the last time. He was happy to chew on my clothes, fingers, arm, etc. When I moved away he would "talk" me into coming back to him for a little more chewing.

I promised him that he would not be forgotten and would always have a place in our hearts.

Ginger Morgan

Hi There
This is regarding the Beaten and Stabbed Puppy Petition.   I was concerned that there was not enough information on this petition so I contacted Irish she got back with me about the ASPCA being the target.
However before I heard back I did some investigation into the story and found both written and video...link below

Very sad.  Actually I meant to send it with this request but got side tracked.  They think it might be gang related.
I appreciate your help.

Stop Oil Drilling in Alaska Wildlife Refuge!

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska Regional Director Tom Melius
Sponsor: The Wilderness Society
  • Signatures: 5,547
  • Goal: 30,000
  • Deadline: 3-25-2008
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering allowing oil development on a core parcel of the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

This land, vital habitat to millions of migratory birds, moose, Dall sheep and bears is on the threshold of being ruined by roads, pipelines, and pollution.

What's at stake here?
  • An enormous wetland basin of rivers and lakes that is habitat for marten, wild salmon, moose, bears, wolves, caribou and more,
  • A base for hundreds of species of migratory birds, and
  • Native cultures that have relied on the region's resources for millennia.

This special place in America would be irreparably damaged if oil exploration and development is allowed, bringing with it roads, traffic, pipelines, oil spills and pollution.

We have until March 25 to tell the Fish and Wildlife Service that oil drilling has no place in this critical ecosystem. Please sign this petition today!
