+++++++++++++ PLEASE CROSS POST ++++++++++++++++++
Dear Friends of Animals,
Clinton supporter North Carolina Governor Mike Easley has failed to request the introduction of legislation which would override the Commissioner of Agriculture's recent removal of the state's own board's recommendation to end the killing of pets by carbon monoxide gas under the excuse that "aggressive dogs are safer to kill by gas." Most of this country uses injection to euthanize even aggressive dogs, including 67 of North Carolina's 100 counties, but the Ag. Commissioner's people appear to be claiming that aggressive dogs in the 37 counties which DO use gas are more vicious than those in the 63 which do not. It is not worth commenting. This kind of false excuses by politicians is what has caused so many voters to not vote.
and see the gassing being done TODAY in Yadkin County and 36 other counties in N.C. (63 use injectable). It takes 2-3 minutes to load. This video will be shown tomorrow night in NYC on Time Warner Queens Ch. 34 at 8 PM, and in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Hamptons in Long Island where the move stars live. It will then go into reruns for many years to come, airing twice every year on all our cablesystems. Our television program is carried by Cablevision, Time Warner, and RCN Cable. Though this video is on our website, I had chosen not to watch it until last night, in preparing it to be broadcast on the show. IT SHOOK ME TO THE CORE !! IF YOU REFUSE TO WATCH THE ATTACHED VIDEO YOU WILL NOT BE MOTIVATED TO DO WHAT YOU WOULD OTHERWISE DO, AND YOU WILL BE JUST AS MUCH TO BLAME FOR THE CONTINUATION OF THIS MONSTROSITY !!
After watching the video please call N.C. Gov. Easley at 919-733-4240 and 919-733-5811, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler at 919-733-7125, and Chamber of Commerce Pres Lew Ebert at 919-836-1407 and tell them that you will boycott N.C. goods and will spread the word about the practices of N.C. If Gov. Easley's office tells you that the Agriculture Commissioner is a separately elected office, tell Mr. Easley that the governor can cause the introduction of state legislation banning gassing.
In Georgia, even though a law was passed banning gassing of animals, the State Assenblyman who passed that law has sued the state for refusing to enforce it 10 years after enactment. States which still allow gas must be federally banned from doing so. I have spoken with the attorney doing that law suit. Also, please ask the Democratic and Republican Platform Committees to include a ban on all gas killing of animals. I, for one, an uncommitted voter, have decided to NOT vote for Obama nor McCain unless and until one or the other addresses this issue by agreeing to nationally ban gas killing of animals. I intend to reach both campaigns.
This email needs to be mass distributed nationally, being sent to blogs, other media, yahoogroups. Please forward it to everyone you know. The power of the internet and television to force change has been proven over and over. Please help us end this monstrous practice NOW! If this was happening to you or me every day which passed by would matter. Just think of the southern summer heat inside those kill boxes, with dozens of pets stuffed in them like toys, pinned against one another unable to move even a paw. Just think of the horror, the anguish, the fear, the TERROR !!!
A rescue in Florida (Contact info below) took in rescued 3 Mustangs & one half Mustang colt and desperately need to find homes for them
Bandero is standoffish sometimes comes to you sometimes not.
He is quiet now but he might be more horse when he gains weight
Dutchess is very friendly and handleable, she may even be quiet enough to train to ride, not sure.
We have not tried to touch her legs or trim her feet yet
Rocket is a Dutchess’s 6 month old colt, other half is QH, he is very tiny.
He will be gelded next week
Gypsy, the healthiest looking one is dangerous. She is 11 yrs old and will likely never tame any more than she has at this point She can be haltered and lead from the right side (only) with great time and caution but anything else and she will run you down, severe kicker also.
We will have to get her into a stock to pull a Coggins Only for the most experenced horse person
All need a permanent, lifetime home, no breeding please, there are too many horses already without a home.
No fee or donation but adopter must pay for transport and health certificate
Adopters must send us photos of their place where the horse will live and tell us what their long term plans are for the horse. The calls are coming in daily from people who cannot afford to keep their horses anymore.
People wanting to adopt from HPAF please email me for an adoption application hpaf@bellsouth.net
We also have two other mares, one Paso and one QH who need an adopter who is skilled with horses that dislike people and have never been handled kindly.
Both unrideable
Please email if you want to be contacted about any future Mustangs needing homes
Thank you

State Officials Accused of Secretly Gutting Proposed Animal Euthanasia Rules
NC Department of Agriculture evades public scrutiny; Removes humane provisions behind closed doors.
North Carolina Today, animal welfare supporters throughout North Carolina called for a legislative review of proposed rules governing euthanasia of dogs and cats at animal shelters in the state.
A non-profit animal welfare organization, the North Carolina Coalition for Humane Euthanasia, is opposing last-minute changes made by Department of Agriculture officials that take the teeth out of regulations originally intended to ensure the humane treatment of homeless animals. The rules can be found online at http://ncagr. com/vet/aws/ documents/ 16288.pdf.
A state law passed in 2005 required the Department of Agriculture to establish standards for the care of animals at animal shelters, boarding kennels, pet shops, and public auctions. The law also required that the department adopt rules on the euthanasia of animals and mandate training for any person who participates in the process. This law can be viewed online at http://www.ncleg. net/Sessions/ 2005/Bills/ House/rtf/ H685v0.rtf.
Two years later, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture released a proposed set of regulations.
Thousands of North Carolina citizens responded by submitting verbal and written testimony in opposition to the inhumane and dangerous practice of gassing animals for euthanasia. The Agriculture Department later published a new draft of proposed rules that required a phase out of the gas chamber by 2012.
However, the new version of the rules, which has not been published in the North Carolina Register, removes the phase out requirement and lifts restrictions on the use of the gas chamber for sick, injured and geriatric animals. It also eliminates requirements related to training and certification of euthanasia technicians – which can cause unimaginable pain to animals being destroyed.
“The Department has violated the public trust by putting one set of rules before the public and then drastically weakening them behind closed doors, said Shari Strader, board member for NCCHE. “The Agriculture Department must be held accountable for failing to meet its responsibility to the public and its mandate to develop humane euthanasia standards for animals.”
North Carolina residents’ taxes pay for the salaries of state decision makers, as well as funding county shelters and gas chambers. “I don’t think people realize they are footing the bill for the choices that are being made by the Agriculture Department regarding animal welfare issues and euthanasia methods,” states Bobbi Parke, animal advocate. “If they only knew half of what is going on in this arena, and that they actually do have a say in choices that are being made for them, they would all immediately contact the Agriculture Department and demand accountability.”
The rules would also require shelters using gas chambers to purchase new commercial models. Two North Carolina companies supplying gas chambers to shelters have come under fire, after inspections showed that the machines leaked high levels of carbon monoxide and endangered county employees. Three county employees operating gas chambers in North Carolina have died in recent years.
A quarter of a million cats and dogs are killed in North Carolina animal shelters annually. While most jurisdictions now utilize modern euthanasia practices, more than 30 county facilities continue to use the gas chamber.. Extreme animal suffering in the gas chamber is well-documented. These humane concerns were the catalyst for the original rule making process. The question is: why are drastic last minute changes being made, and why are they being made secretly?
The NC Rules Review Commission will consider the new version of proposed rules at their July 17 meeting in Raleigh. Concerned citizens may write letters until July 17 to the Office of Administrative Hearings, Rules Review Commission, 1307 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27605.

There are reasons to say thank you to many involved in the transformation of the Vick dogs, but none of this would have happened without the action of U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson who ordered each dog to be evaluated (see paragraph 3 of the article) individually.
Please thank Judge Hudson. Unfortunately, there is no public email address we have been able to find, but there is a fax. His fax: 804-916-2216
His US mail address: The Honorable Judge Henry E. Hudson, U. S. District Judge U. S. District Court, Eastern Virginia 1000 E. Main Street; Suite 112 Richmond, VA 23219
Or write a letter to the editor in your local paper and thank him there.
Please continue your vigilance against animal fighting. It still hurts incredibly to read in this article of some specifics - like the Vick dog Mike-Mike who lost after fighting for three hours and five minutes. Can you imagine fighting that long? Can you imagine the pain and horror? And the article does not say what happened to the dog after he lost. Remember, Mr. Vick isn't the only person who gloried in dogfighting. It continues today. You can help eliminate.
If there are stories to tell about successes, please send them on. If there are instances where failures took place for lack of manpower or funding, send those on as well. This is a battle we can all fight.
Meeting Minutes The meeting minutes from the first three regional meetings are posted on the website: www.VirginiaVotersForAnimalWelfare.com. Once there, find the blue side bar, and in the side bar find the section about meeting minutes and click there. This will give you a good idea of the focus this season.
Meeting Correction Emails have been sent several times in the last few days by Jeanette Allard of St. Seton's Orphaned Animals. The emails contain erroneous information about the meeting in Fredericksburg.
The incorrect emails indicate a group called "Virginia Federation of Animal Welfare" is hosting the Fredericksburg meeting. There is no such group as far as we know.
The emails also provide the wrong date.
To correct: The meeting in Fredericksburg will be on Sunday, 8/10/08, and will run from 11 am to 1 pm.
The meeting will be held, courtesy of Joe Wilson, at the PermaTreat Building located at 505 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg.
The meeting is co-sponsored by the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies and Virginians for Animal Welfare/Virginia Voters for Animal Welfare with a presentation by the Legislative Liaison of VACA (Virginia Animal Control Association).
There will be a review of the very successful 2008 session of the General Assembly, and there will be input from those at the meeting about what issues to tackle in the upcoming 2009 session.
Please come to the Fredericksburg meeting (or any other meetings - they are listed on the website), and please let us know you will be there.
Thank you for continuing to work.
Lillian Clancy and Don Marro
PS: Don't forget to come to the meeting on this Sunday, 7/13, in Afton (Nelson County). This will be the most convenient meeting for those in Charlottesville and Albemarle County and will pick up Nelson County and more.
And there is a BBQ and a sanctuary tour - and pot belly pigs to enjoy on Sunday!
Take action yourself to demand prompt protection for the Cook Inlet beluga whale and learn more about the Center's suit from the Anchorage Daily News.
Suit Filed for Snubbed Belugas
The Center for Biological Diversity and allies filed suit against the Bush administration last week for lollygagging on granting Endangered Species Act protection to imperiled belugas in Alaska. The Cook Inlet beluga whale, a biologically unique and geographically isolated population, now numbers just 375 individuals -- down from about 1,300 in the '80s -- and lives in one of Alaska's most populated and fastest-growing watersheds. In fact, the whale's Cook Inlet home is bombarded with pressures from oil and gas development, sewage discharge, and contaminated runoff and spills, and vital whale habitat is slated for several huge infrastructure projects that would directly impact the vulnerable beluga.
The Center, Cook Inletkeeper, Natural Resources Defense Council, the North Gulf Oceanic Society, and the Alaska Center for the Environment joined forces in 2006 to petition for the beluga's protection, and the administration proposed to list the whale this April. Instead, though, the agency bowed to development interests and illegally put off its decision for another six months due to an alleged "disagreement" in the science.
