While I commend Warren Buffet, the Gates and Ms. Jolie for their generosity and concern for humanity I do not feel that it is necessary to go overseas to do the kind of lifesaving work they are doing. Right here in the good ole' US of A, the richest country in the world we have people who are starving, homeless, malnourished, lacking medicine and the basics one needs to survive. Do not get me wrong, I agonize over the conditions and the inhumanity that exists in the world and I want all of humanity to be rescued from genocidal practices, starvation and abject poverty, realize that nations will not work together to erase these evils and we, all of us, must try our best to STOP the waste of our resources on wars, munitions and terrorism and redirect them into filling those needs. But given all of that I wonder what philanthropist is going to come forward to address the needs that exist here in the U.S. Who will adopt our orphans? Who will address health care for the uninsured, food for the undernourished, homes for the homeless and inadequately sheltered, quality education for all our citizens through college and vocational schools. Has anyone visited an elderly person recently to see how they are getting by? A reservation? A battered women's shelter? A single mother struggling to work and care for her children? I say this to say that I believe if we improve the quality of life and economic conditions of those on the bottom rungs in our society and keep those just above from slipping more of us will be in positions to help others. If a person does not have to worry about being able to have the basics and can have a little extra, some of that extra can help stop a hole for someone else. Even if it is just a dollar that one gives, one has to have that dollar first. We have a lot of work to do to make things right in this world, to erase disease and poverty. The global population is growing, and here at home just might be a good place to start. Do we have to be a Warren, Bill, Melinda or Angelina? I don't think so. Can't we do this? WE MUST. Somehow we have to pool our individual resources. Tell me what you think and how you think we can do it. We need to start NOW before it's too late for all of us.
