To my animal Care2 friends,cutefaceold.jpg

Having just received an alert about the Cape Fur seal from Kym, I do want to add my concerns again about South African legislation and ask you all to please publicise the petition about S.A wildlife so we can collect more signatures.
With legislation now being redrafted to fit in with the N.E.M.B.A (national environmental management biodiversity act) guidelines, it’s important for all species that we act now. The N.E.M.B Act is a broad outline which calls for biodiversity. Species such as the Cape Fur Seal would therefore be offered more protection if legislation is redrafted according to the N.E.M.B.A guidelines and those who work hands on to fight for individuals and species are brought in to the process to change laws. I know most or all of you have signed but if possible please do forward this info.

Personally as an animal rights activist, I believe that animal rights in a necessity to saving our planet and all inhabitants. This is why my profile suggests we need to move from an anthropocentric world view (where we see humans as central – above all other species) towards a biocentric world view (where we see our human species as one amongst all others). This means that our so-called conservation actions would not serve people as first priority often at the expense of other species. Non-human animals would not be seen as 'resources". However the enormous division between animal rightists and conservationists is a major obstacle in our common fight. Those who are presently redrafting our hunting legislation for example, are on the whole, big “game” (what kind of a word is that?) hunters themselves and will no doubt re-arrange scientific theory to justify their continuous eradication of species and individual animals.

The following picture I recently took on the land we live  – it shows a tiny sliver of the damage done here due to what the laws allow. I live in The Western Cape where baboons are allowed to be shot all year round, sitting targets in trees at night, with traps, dogs….there is no limitation on how many one can shoot.

Having observed the troops here for the last four years I have not only witnessed the killing of individuals but serious damage to troop structures - adult males are mostly targeted. As a result most troops here have only one adult male to about 15 adult females – a fact that causes a ripple effect of damage throughout the troop.
We need more signatures for the following petition so please do publicise this further.
Thank you ALL for all the alerts you send my way.
With support in our common cause as always,

Addressed to the D.E.A.T. and C.N.C, we are asking for all interested parties to be invited to engage in workshops while provincial legislation is redrafted to meet with N.E.M.B.A requirements.
We need laws that will protect all free roaming species before it's too late. Please sign and comment on this urgent petition that calls for an adequate consultative process to bring about the utmost protection and health of biodiversity as required by the N.E.M.B.Act.

See that Justice is Served in Jacksonville regarding Pastor Vincent Kohn’s cruelty to animals.

See that Justice is Served in Jacksonville Regarding Pastor Vincent Kohn’s Cruelty to Animals.

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:

See that Justice is Served in Jacksonville regarding Pastor Vincent Kohn’s cruelty to animals.

Target: Chief Flagler of Jacksonville Animal Care and Control Center, Attorney Harry Shorstein Fourth Judicial Circuit Court

Sponsor: Chantelle Littlejohn ,

Assistant Animal Advocate, Research, Case Developments

              Puppy Passions Rescue & Transport

Division Chief: David Flagler

Animal Care and Control Center

Jacksonville, FL 32254

February 23, 2006

Dear Chief Flagler,

My name is Chantelle Littlejohn and I am a volunteer with Puppy Passions Rescue & Transport. On February 6, 2006, Channel 4-news reporter, Jennifer Waugh, ran a report on a Pastor Vincent Kohn, who reportedly was seen throwing puppies from his pick-up truck.

According to Jacksonville Animal Care and Control (ACC) ordinances, when a person treats an animal so as to cause unnecessary torment, or deprives an animal of necessary sustenance or shelter, said individual is punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both.

Florida Statutes Title XLVI. Crimes
Chapter 828. Animals: Cruelty; Sales; Animal Enterprise Protection
Effective July 8, 2004
828.12 Cruelty to animals: subsection 1.

According to Part 2, Section 462.201, page 12, ACC ordinances also state that, “It shall be unlawful for any person to cause, procure or inflict cruelty to or upon animal, whether or not such cruelty results in severe injury or death. For purposes of this part, it shall be considered causing, procuring and/or inflicting cruelty, if one or more of the following occurs:

Page 13: subsection (e) “Any act, omission or neglect whereby unnecessary or unjustifiable pain or suffering is cause, permitted or allowed to continue when there is reasonable remedy or relief.” Said individual is subject to, “a civil fine of $500.00”

According to Part 2, Section 462.203, Neglecting or abandoning animals (page 13), “It shall be unlawful for any person to neglect or abandon an animal. For purposes of this part, it shall be considered neglect or abandonment if one or more of the following occurs:” (Page 14)  (a) failure to provide “sufficient water; sufficient wholesome food, adequate shelter with sufficient floor, three walls and a roof to protect the animal from the weather, extreme temperature and direct sunlight; [and] veterinary care to prevent suffering.” Subsection (d) includes “leaving the animal upon or beside any street, road or other public or privet place” as also in violation of the ordinances set by ACC.

By disposing of the puppies, in the manner committed, Mr. Kohn broke the animal care laws in subsection (a) and (d). Mr. Kohn could have turned over the dogs to the ACC who has provisions under Part 6, Section 462.604 Voluntary surrender by owner, for unwanted animals. “A violation of this section (Part 6, Section 462.604) shall subject the violator to a civil fine of $500.00” By abandoning the dogs in the manner committed, Mr. Kohn clearly violated the above listed ordinances.

We, the Undersigned, ask that the Department of Animal Care and Control and State Attorney Shorstein take legal action against Pastor Vincent Kohn for each individual puppy he abandoned and see that the laws are upheld in Florida.

Urge News Stations and Talk Shows to do a story on horse slaughter

Please inform the American Public about the horrors of horse slaughter and the way the USDA is attempting to undermine the will of Congress by allow a fee based system of inspection to continue the slaughter of American horses for foreign consumption. Also inform the American public about the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA), bill number HR 503.  This bill would be good for America's horses and equine industry.

Urge News Stations and Talk Shows to do a story on horse slaughter

I'm sure you are aware that the horse slaughterhouses operating in this country have hired former Texas Representative Charles Stenholm to lobby on their behalf.  Since he is nothing more than a paid puppet of this industry, he will say anything to get you to vote against the AHSPA.
Mr. Stenholm and the groups he represents state that there will be a problem with horse welfare problem if slaughter is banned in our country.  However, there are facts about this industry that completely undermine the "unwanted horse" rhetoric being spread by Charles Stenholm.
Fact: In the 1990's there was a sharp decline in the number is U.S. horses slaughtered.  According to USDA records; 345,700 horses were slaughtered for export in 1990; ten years later in 2000 that number was 50,400. During this timeframe the number of horses slaughtered per year dropped by as many as 79,000, and was no rash of "unwanted horses."  The reason the decline happened was due to slackening demand in Europe & Asia for horsemeat during that time.
Fact: 7,100 horses were imported from Canada for slaughter in the U.S. last year.  How can there be an "unwanted horse problem" if the slaughterhouses have to import them??
Fact: The number of horses slaughtered has increased over the past two years due to increased demand abroad for U.S. horsemeat.  The horse slaughter industry exists in the U.S. for one reason, to make a large profit satisfying Europe's voracious appetite for American horsemeat. It has nothing to do with saving "unwanted horses" from neglect, and everything to do with supply and demand.
The facts show Stenholm is not telling you the truth about the AHSPA!

Equines are American history and heritage and do not deserve to end up on the dinner table in other countries.

A recent witness at a slaughterhouse describes it as this: "You can hear the shrill whistles of the men driving the horses, the clop of their hooves on metal grating, and the
sickening snap of the captive bolt gun. Then you hear the horse either drop or begin thrashing. One horse struggled for
several minutes and you could hear the gun going off time and time
again as the man tried to hit its forehead. A lot of horses were
ineffectively stunned while I listened."

Ohio Senate Bill 17 gives victims of sexual assault effective civil recourse now and in the future

Please Sign and forward to all of your friends on your friends list. If you have already signed I thank you in advance!!!

Please Pass Ohio Senate Bill 17
    Dear Representative John R. Wllamowski:

We, the undersigned, being of sound mind and judgement, do ask you to please pass Ohio Senate Bill 17 to the Ohio House of Representatives for a full floor vote, bringing Ohio Senate Bill 17 one step closer to aceiving it's goals.

    Ohio Senate Bill 17:

    • Gives sexual assault victims effective civil recourse in the future by lengthening the civil statute of limitations to 20 years
    • Provides recourse for past victims of sexual assault by providing a one year period to bring a civil claim against their perpetrators if their statute of limitations has expired
    • Requires clergy to report the known or reasonably suspected abuse of a minor
    • Strengthens the Gross Sexual Imposition language of the Ohio criminal code
    • Exposes past sexual predators, ensuring they will not continue preying on innocent people
Representative Willamowski, the effects of rape and other forms of sexual assaults last far beyond two years. The need to give those who have been victimized the opportunity to bring closure to their horrific situations, and to protect children is crucial. Emotional and moral confusion make it extremely difficult to report cases of abuse, particularly when an abuser is a religious figure or a family member. The relationship between abusers and their victims is one of trust and secrecy, and two years is much too short a timeframe for victims to break out of that relationship in order to realize that what happened to them needs to be reported. Oftentimes it takes years for a person to realize that they were not to blame for the crimes committed against them and that he or she will need to seek counseling or therapy and come to terms with his or her abuse.

Representative Willamowski, please lend your support to Senate Bill 17 and encourage the rest of the Ohio Judiciary Committee to do the same. By doing so, you will help to protect children, help to give victims of sexual abuse an appropriate timeframe in which to report their abusers, and give victims an opportunity to seek justice and closure.

Thank you for your time, and thank you for supporting Ohio Senate Bill 17.

Please read this note it is from me to you.

    I have been running hectic the past few months trying to get things / life in some kind of working organized way ---- LOL----- but such is life at times – anyway; I just wanted to drop a note and say;

I have had so many messages and emails that I cannot now remember which ones I replied to or not; so --- that being said if you sent me something and I missed it or did not reply it was completely by accident and not that I was ignoring you or anything like that.

What messages I get usually brighten my day and I do so appreciate you taking the time to send them, petitions do not brighten my day but I am always happy to receive something that you think is important, and will check it out as well – I want to sincerely Thank You, each and every one of you; I will try to get better at typing and checking these things. Hopefully I may comunicate better in the future.

I never would have thought that I would meet so many wonderful people on the internet --- I was always against the internet and only saw / heard about the negative uses of it. One year and a half ago I was given a PC as my dad wanted me to get modern ‘you can’t stay a construction worker forever son’ at that first week someone sent me a card from Care2 and I found all of you cool, wonderful caring people.

I now have met so many it is unreal trying to keep up – the problem now is that when I have friends I really like to be close and supportive with them and I cant keep up like I do in person.

I want each of you too know that you have helped renew my attitude and perception of humanity. Most of my life was not pretty and although I changed all that some 13 years ago once again I was becoming quite cynical about people really caring about anything, you all have renewed my hope and vision of the possibilities for the world and all that live here.

I would have rather sent a personal note to you but that I an sorry I am not fast enough at typing to even start to do. Be that as it may I really do mean everything that I wrote here is directed personally to each of you.

Love, Light, Health and Peace to you and yours!

    Sincerely, no B/S; Eric A

Sometimes where I live Dear get separated or lost and wander into the City.

2 nights ago I was driving home around 1:30AM. I saw the lights of the car way out ahead of me swerve around something in the road. I figured I would swerve too when I got there. As I approached I noticed it was a Dear. She was looking right at me.

It is the time of year when they start moving alot and we end up with many of them dead on the highway.

As I got closer I saw that she was still alive, her legs had been broken, she had been trying to stand and run but had finally given up a few minutes before I got there. I pulled up and stopped a little way in front of her, parked and turned on the hazard lights – so no one would hit her again.

She was looking at me with the most accepting and yet not so scared look, those big brown eyes pleading to me. I called the police on my cell phone and asked for help. Then turned my attention to her. We talked for a little while (the Dear and I) I told her that I would do what I can she looked at me and her gaze softened. She knew I was just trying to help but there was no help, she knew she was going to die.

There was a calm acceptance yet an undisclosed sorrow.

The police arrived and I watched as her fear grew till she was overwhelmed with fear again. She tried to run again she could not stand but about half way up.

She would stagger a couple of half steps and fall – she did this three times trying to get back to the woods. She was lying on the ground and looked back at me over her shoulder as if to say “cant they just let me die in peace”. I held back my tears because I did not want her to be any more scared than she already was. I told her to ease up and that the pain would soon end. I sent her as much good thought and love as I could.

The officer said he would have to shoot her;  he was upset about it too. I said my prayers for her asked for her safe arrival wherever she may be going --- then I drove down the street pulled over and shed my tears – for her – for others – for the world. The blessing and the peace to know it and feel it all ----------- peace to you all – your friend – no matter no matter Eric A

PS: I think I saw her last night running free in a field of tall grass and wild flowers with several friends – maybe it was only in my dream / maybe she came to tell me -- but when I awoke I had a feeling that all was well for her!
