Tell Scott McClellan to donate his book profits to veterans 3:46 PM

There are laws to prevent criminals from profiting by selling their stories. But after spending years defending the Bush administration and perpetuating the lies that led our country into war, Scott McClellan is poised to make bank—his tell-all book is a bestseller and he may make hundreds of thousands or millions.

Meanwhile, our troops are still dying in Iraq.

Coming clean is admirable. But McClellan shouldn't profit off
the role he played in our nation's largest foreign policy
blunder.

So we have a proposition for him. Let's call on him to donate

all of the proceeds from his book to a group that helps Iraq veterans, like Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. If we make enough noise, he'll probably be asked about it on tomorrow's Sunday shows (he's on all three!)—so please sign on and pass this around. Click here:

http://pol.moveon.org/mcclellan/?r_by=12765-5736868-_1LwHD&rc=paste

The petition reads:

People who helped lie this
country into an unnecessary war should not be rewarded for it. Scott McClellan
should donate all the proceeds from his book to a group that helps Iraq
veterans—like Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Thanks for all you
do.

News from resisting the Bush program or endless war & torture:

On Wednesday May 14, the Chicago City Council was scheduled to vote on a resolution against a US attack on Iran.  This resolution was created by the No War on Iran Coalition of Chicago and was introduced by Alderman Joe Moore.

But Richard Daley, Mayor of Chicago emphatically criticized the resolution, effectively blocking the Council from proceeding, and forcing it to be tabled.  Daley said such decisions should be left to the Democratic nominee for president, and that this issue being "injected" into the political campaign would harm Obama's chances.  Daley 's statement

The next day President Bush gave a speech before the Israeli Knesset in which he made clear he would not negotiate with Iran.  He compared anyone who tried to negotiate with Iran to a Nazi appeaser. These statements make all the more real the threat of an attack on Iran.  Bush statement.

Bush's statement launched a battle between Obama and McCain to show who can be the toughest in the war on terror. Meanwhile the lives of the Iranian people hang in the balance.

The No War On Iran Coalition is determined to pass this resolution despite the vote being blocked on Wednesday. Coaliltion response here.

World Can't Wait calls on the anti-war movement as a whole and the citizens across this country to act with urgency to introduce resolutions to elected bodies where you live opposing an attack on Iran, and to mobilize to stop business as usual to prevent an attack on Iran.  We will not be the "appeasers" of a war criminal president hell bent on committing further war crimes and crimes against humanity. We will not allow the "politics as usual" of this presidential campaign to "inject" silence and complicity among the people of this country while the people of Iran, the entire Middle East, and the globe over face this grave threat.

200 Protest: Fire/Disbar/Prosecute John Yoo at U C Berkeley Law School Graduation

As thousands of friends and family members of graduates, and then Boalt Hall Dean Edley and the graduates themselves, filed into the stadium, World Can't Wait, National Lawyers Guild members, Act Against Torture, and many others called on them to wear orange and take a stand on this important occasion -- not only against torture, but against the normalization and acceptance of war criminals on a supposedly liberal campus.

Our protest was very powerful visually. Act Against Torture brought a cage with two orange jump-suited Guantanamo prisoners inside guarded by an "armed" guard with a fake gun. World Can't Wait brought a bunch of enlarged photos of torture from Abu-Ghraib. We also had a very creative new protest device: giant displays mounted on backpacks with messages about why John Yoo should be fired. But probably the most dramatic display of opposition to John Yoo came in the form of a plane that flew over the graduation for about 15 minutes bearing a banner that said, "Shame on Yoo, UC Berkeley End Torture".  Inside the graduation, two UC students unfurled a banner calling for Yoo to be fired.  We called on the students to use this opportunity to go out into the world and right a terrible wrong, to take their degree and use it to prosecute John Yoo for war crimes!

Fox News:

Be a “Message Force Multiplier” for the Truth.

Spread the Word about the Scandal

You've become part of something extraordinary -- a people-powered campaign to blow the lid off the biggest media scandal of the year.

Earlier, you urged your member of Congress to investigate pro-war propaganda on news programs across the country. In doing so, you are one of nearly 100,000 citizens, bloggers and independent media who are refusing to let Big Media bury this story.

We're ramping up our grassroots push to get Congress to investigate illegal propaganda and make the news networks and the Bush administration accountable.

Spread the Word: Don't Let the Media Cover Up This Scandal

Two weeks ago, a 7,600-word exposé in the New York Times revealed that military propagandists had overrun networks like Fox News, CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN to spin the Iraq war using scripts provided by the Pentagon. White House officials even called their planted pundits "message force multipliers."

Both the White House and Big Media are doing everything they can to cover up this scandal. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino abruptly ended her daily press briefing last week when an independent journalist asked about it. The broadcast networks and the cable news shows have basically blacked out coverage.

But something amazing happened along the way. Bloggers and independent journalists from OpenLeft, DailyKos, Huffington Post, The Nation, Salon.com, and Democracy Now! have kept news of the scandal alive.

And Congress is taking notice. On Tuesday, Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and John DingellFCC urging an investigation to determine if the networks violated federal law by deceiving the American public. Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Russ FeingoldGovernment Accountability Office to shed light on the scandal. (D-Mich.) sent a letter to the (D-Wis.) have asked the

Now it's up to you to push this over the top and demand a real investigation. Become our own "message force multiplier" and help build momentum to force an investigation:

Multiply the Message: Tell Five Friends to Take Action

By telling five of your friends to contact Congress, you can turn up pressure on Washington to ensure that this scandal will not be ignored.

It’s time mainstream media were made to answer for their role in this war.

The New York Times exposed a shady Pentagon program to embed up to 75
"propaganda pundits" on every major news network. These so-called
experts went on the air to cover up bad news about Iraq with White
House spin. Media now is covering it up.

Pelosi Plans $178 Billion Blank Check for Iraq
"Measured in blood and treasure, the war in Iraq has achieved the status of a major war and a major debacle."
That's not from the peace movement - it's from the National Defense University, written by a senior Pentagon official who served under Donald Rumsfeld.
Yet despite the overwhelming opposition of the American people, Speaker Pelosi plans to rush a vote through Congress for another $178 billion blank check.
We must stop this madness. Tell Congress: No More Funds for Iraq

Activists around the country are organizing Iraq Town Halls so we can speak directly to our Representatives:

Unfortunately most Representatives are afraid to face us at our Town Halls, so we're organizing May Day Protests outside their District Offices on Thursday, May 1 at noon.
May 1 is the original Labor Day, and several unions are going on strike to protest the Iraq War. It's also "Mission Accomplished Day" (2003) and  "Downing Street Minutes Day" (2005). Can you join us?

Torture News Strike
After George Bush told ABC News he personally approved of the approval of torture - including waterboarding - you'd think the story would be front page news, not just on Countdown and The Daily Show.
But you'd be wrong. There has been absolutely no news coverage and just a handful of editorials in the Brattleboro (Vt.) Reformer, Kansas City Star, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News.
If your newspaper is missing, help us organize a Torture News Strike.
http://www.democrats.com/torture-news-strike
Call your newspaper editor and tell him/her you are suspending your subscription until they give Bush's torture confession the serious coverage it deserves in the news or editorial sections, or preferably both. Then call the circulation department and tell them to suspend delivery until further notice.
And post about it with your neighbors here:

Torture Impeachment Petition Collects 35,000 Signatures!
One week ago, we asked you to sign our petition to Congress to impeach Bush and Cheney for approving torture.
Your response was incredible! In just one week, we delivered 35,000 signatures to our Representatives and Senators!
If you haven't yet signed, please visit:

Dr. Martin Luther King famously said of the Vietnam War, "A time comes when silence is betrayal." When our President and Vice President personally approve torture, that time is now.
