The Pentagon estimates that it costs $1 billion to send an extra 1,000 troops to Afghanistan.

That breaks down to $1 million per soldier.

In addition, the entire U.S. military spends $1.9 million of taxpayer money every minute.

That’s $1.9 million not used for health care, schools, or investing in our communities.

Those number are from here:

That's the American Friends Service Committee

PLEASE get vocal, there are lots of protests and letter campaigns and petitions and all that but what we NEED is to get everyone that claims they are against the war to start talking to EVERYONE they know and not to just think it's a bad war that must stop and not just talk to other anti war people, we need this talked about by everyone everywhere, at home at work at school at the store, everywhere.

FLOOD media with emails, letters, phone calls and faxs (HUGE list at bottom of this email)

You know what Obama will do next don't you?

C'mon, think about it, he'll not only keep us inIraq and Afghanistan, but he'll drag us into Korea or Iran or anywhere his bosses tell him, and his bosses are the military/oil/pharmesutical/any and all other corporations and we need to stand together to make US the bosses like it's supposed to be.

Either that or we watch more lives wasted and watch our economy totally go down and have a full blown depression and by then it'll be too late to do anything.

March and do anything you want, but talking to people close to you even if they don't want to hear it is probably one of the few things that will work, we need more people knowing the facts and speaking up.

Obama Hopeless Escalation

There are news reports that on Decembers 1st, Obama will be at West Point to announce that he is sending tens of thousands more troops to Afghanistan, this despite our rallies, vigils, petitions, phone calls and e-mails saying NO to MORE WAR. We can't let generals and war profiteers be the only ones who have the President's ear.

Obama needs to hear our voices loud and clear. Now is the time to take to the streets, the airwaves, and the opinion pages to say NO to escalation, NO to massive corruption and war profiteering, NO to bombs dropped on Afghan wedding parties, and no to money squandered on war and occupation while the needs of people in this country go unmet.

We have made a powerful "Hopeless Escalation" visual that you can use to create a sign for your office, your window, or your car.

Download the flier for your office, window or car: B W | Color

You can send "Hopeless Escalation" as an e-card to your friends and family. Or try making a banner to hang from a freeway overpass!

Before anything else, we owe a couple dozen of you a bit of an
apology. We underestimated the demand for the new "Single Payer
Health Care
" caps and got caught short by a couple dozen with the
shipment that went out yesterday. But we will be taking delivery on
another big batch before the end of the coming week, and they are all
going out first class, so if you don't get yours this week, you will
shortly after that, and we thank you for your patience. And if you
get a request in this week it will go out then as well. In the
meantime, all the "Convict Dick & W" caps have gone out.

Not Even Obama Will Give Up The Illegal War Powers Seized By Bush
Unless Congress Makes Him Do It

Even in appointing a special counsel last week to look into torture,
Eric Holder essentially directed him to IGNORE whether a crime was
committed in ordering torture in the first place. The only mandate
lifelong Republican prosecutor John Durham has been given is about
whether department personnel EXCEEDED the instructions they were
given. The "just following orders defense" rejected at Nuremberg has
been resurrected by our new Attorney General.

With Holder doing such a weak job of enforcing the law on his own, it
is all the more important to get Congress to reassert itself in all
these matters, in particular the abuse of war powers under which all
the torture happened in the first place. And HR 104, To establish a
national commission on presidential war powers and civil liberties,
appears to be a good step in this direction. We should not
preemptively exclude congressional commissions or investigations as a
route to real justice, for that is what Watergate was all about.
Congress must act NOW to constrain ALL future presidents, including
Obama, lest we end up with worse than Bush before we know it.

Presidential War Powers Action Page:
http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1001.php

How all those Nazi war criminals would have wished for a standard
like that set by Eric Holder. Legal opinions no matter how corruptly
or self-servingly drafted become get out of prison free cards. Never
might that there were many valiant, patriotic people in the CIA and
the FBI, the vast majority, who STRENUOUSLY objected to the adoption
of torture as accepted U.S. policy. The fact is that NO member of any
one of these agencies could have believed in good faith that the
torture techniques condemned when used by every other totalitarian
regime were suddenly squeaky clean in their hands.

That is what is so disingenuous about Holder's posture, a refusal to
actually confront the real issue. Either we are a nation of laws or
else we are not. And if the Justice Department was issuing opinions
that were patently bogus in defense of torture, it is corruption in
HIS OWN department that must be rooted out, and all involved in such
outrages must be held fully responsible.

Instead, Holder's suggestion is essentially that a couple so-called
"bad apples" should be scapegoated, just as the contractors directing
the torture at Abu Grahib, under orders that came direct from the
White House, were allowed to skate away, while the lowest level
grunts were given 10 years of hard time. At this point, the best way
to pressure Holder to actually do his job is to pressure Congress to
do theirs, and execute their own investigation into the abuse of war
powers.

Presidential War Powers Action Page:
http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1001.php

And yes, we will continue to hear lies about how splendidly well
torture worked, even though it did not, to try to seduce the American
people
into endorsing the abominable. Cheney was all over the TV over
the last couple months asserting that the recently released CIA
report would absolve him, by showing how torture led to all kinds of
great intelligence breakthroughs. There was nothing like that in
there. Instead, there were detailed specific instructions on
executing torture, adopted from and imitating the worst dictatorships
in history, in clinical detail like something out of World War II
Nazi bureaucracy
.

The Washington Post is in up to their hips with this disinformation
campaign, running a story over the weekend with a headline suggesting
that waterboarding and sleep deprivation were a boon to intelligence.
And yet when you actually read it you find that WHILE Khalid Sheik
Mohammed
was being waterboarded 183 times he was giving false
intelligence that was harmfully counterproductive. It is only AFTER
the criminal mistreatment stopped, and much later, that he actually
started to cooperate.

So let us make no mistake, the people who did these things in our
name were a handful of true sickos, getting in their own sadistic
jollies to the disgrace of the good name of the United States of
America. And not just those few who willingly went along with it
without objection, those who authorized, justified it, and ordered it
must also be held responsible, right back to the desk of former Vice
President Dick Cheney
, and his go along patsy, George Bush. If Holder
is so anxious to relieve CIA employees of responsibility, let them
testify against the real criminal kingpins in the White House, as the
price of their immunity.

So again, if want a "Convict Dick & W" cap we'll be shipping more of
those this week, we'll have more of the "Single Payer Health Care"
caps at the same time. And you can request either of these or any
other of our progressive advocacy gifts from the return page of the

We've Opened the Door, How Do We Keep It Open? Original article and tons and tons more can be found at:
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/35070

By David Swanson

Your hard work has resulted in Congress cracking open the door to impeachment, justice, and peace. How can you keep it open?

A lot of us have our own favorite impeachable offenses - mine is the Iraq war - but a lot of them are not about to go anywhere in Congress. The impeachable offenses that appear to have the most traction among congress members (i.e. very little) are:

1. The numerous violations of laws combined with the announcement of the intention to violate those laws through signing statements. (I say it in this longwinded way, because just abbreviating it to "signing statements" allows people to pretend to miss the point.)

2. The numerous refusals to comply with requests, subpoenas, and contempt citations.

It has always been predictable, and predicted, that these would have the most traction (because nonpartisan, non-controversial, no congressional complicity, no investigation needed, clearcut and simple), and it has become clear that - as predicted - they DO in fact have the most traction.

We'd all LOVE to nail these fascist bastards for our favorite offenses, but we'd also all HATE for them to get off scott free, thereby establishing a precedent for future presidents; and when they nailed Al Capone for tax fraud everybody understood exactly why they'd done so.

What is needed is pressure on every member of Congress to themselves pressure Conyers, including by signing Wexler's letter at http://wexlerwantshearings.com So, please call your Representative every day at (202) 224-3121, focus on the issues that have the most traction, and urge them to ask Conyers to hold a real impeachment hearing. Remember that in an impeachment hearing the excuse of "executive privilege" is not allowed. A subpoena must simply be obeyed or those who refuse to obey it can be impeached.

Of secondary value is trying to get your Representative to introduce new articles of impeachment or new resolutions calling for impeachment hearings. So, any lengthy communications with your Rep should include that ask.

The third most important thing to do is to contact media outlets and urge them to cover impeachment, and contact polling companies and urge them to poll on impeachment.

The fourth most important thing to do is to support pro-impeachment candidates for Congress and make certain the incumbents know about it. Don't just send a check. First send a photocopy of it to the incumbent letting them know why they aren't getting one.

Now is the time to move on this with everything we've got. We've opened the door and must not allow it to close again.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Please go to the original place where this was posted,
( http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/35070 )
but note that I put this here as it does make sense to focus on one main thing that might get more backing by our "representatives".

Lots more can be found on the numerous posts here:

Saturday August 2: Support protests in 50 locations.  Go to  StopWaronIran.org

Wednesday, August 6: Freeze actions against a US Attack on Iran.

Stay tuned for August 6 event plans

On August 6, 1945, the US dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.  Most of the world (but only 70-80% of US college students we've surveyed) know that the US is the only country that has ever used nukes.

George Bush, still commander in chief , is recklessly threatening a war with
Iran that could break out even before the next president is sworn in. He is marshalling the same lies used to justify the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

What is the responsibility of those of us living in the United States to stop a president threatening military attack agains Iran?

None of this will be halted and reversed if the people do not stand up.

The "freeze" actions are quick, fresh, and a creative way to involve many new people who don't march or attend meetings.

Adopt an Activist: Youth at Berkeley Resistance Summer

Youth activists are gathering in Berkeley to organize students to resist the military recruiters  and bring together a movement to politically isolate US "torture memo" professor John Yoo.

Your donations have paid for some of their travel expenses.  They/ve found artists to make beautiful cards to distribute at rock shows, parks, school orientations.  They are organizing mural painting, film showings & protests.

Today 40 people needed to donate $20 each to pay the printing costs, and get this message to 10,000 kids....those of you who can't travel across the country can still participate this way!  Support the youth who are taking their summer to "wake up the folks!"

If you want to send a check or money order, bypassing the online donation, note it for "Berkeley" and mail to World Can't Wait, 305 West Broaday #185, New York NY 10013

Some of Jamilah Hoffman's impressions of Berkeley are on worldcantwait.org:

"Oakland: Riding through Oakland, I immediately spot storefront churches on every block, one memorial and two funerals.  I can honestly say that this was in the span of less than 10 minutes and this really made my heart sink.  I was holding back tears because I have never been around so much despair.  However, I did notice that at one funeral, where the mourners were so young and wearing "RIP" t-shirts painted with their lost loved one, a young woman had, what looked like, pink and purple highlights.  I smiled because if there's one thing I noticed, it's the bold and vibrant colors the young people wear out here.  Even in the midst of the violence and destruction, theirs is a conscious choice to live and live and fully as they can and that is reflected in their appearance.  That gives me hope.

These People are so Patriotic…Ok.  You guys may know that I'm from Texas and we do things pretty big out there, but I can honestly say that I have never seen a pick up truck driving down the highway with a gigantic American flag blowing in the wind.  But I've seen that here!  Add that to the cars with, not just one yellow ribbon decal or one red, white and blue bumper sticker, but, like, five stickers at a time, I almost felt like I was at home!  But then I thought more about it.  In Houston, people have felt content with just one sticker, maybe two. Maybe because the people in the Bay Area who support the troops and this war feel they are outnumbered, they feel they have to go really big to show their support and have their voices heard.  I don't know, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

Or, are they? There are some really cool people out here who are questioning the status quo and are thinking deep thoughts and trying to figure out how to change the direction of things.  We watched the movie Persepolis which is the story of a young woman's life before, during and after the revolution and ultimate takeover of that revolution by the Islamic fundamentalists.  It is a beautiful story but what dominated the conversation before the movie started was Barack Obama.  One guy, a teacher, supported Obama and wanted to know our position.  When it was brought up that Obama was becoming more reactionary, for instance, voting for the FISA which, allows the President to grab all incoming and outgoing international communications without a warrant, among other things, this particular Obama supporter wasn't aware of this and actually had to think about what it was he was supporting.  But the younger people who were there were more aware of what Obama was saying and doing and were less apt to just go along..." more

Last evening, in Penn Station, about a hundred people "froze" against a US attack on Iran.  Photos: Joel Simpson.

"We believe that people of conscience must take responsibility for what their own governments do. Thus we call on all people living in the United States to RESIST the trajectory of wars and repression that has been loosed on the world by the Bush administration and a complicit Congress.  We choose to make common cause with the people of the world by extending a hand to those suffering from these policies and by showing our solidarity in word and deed."

Impeachment Resolution Introduced In House With Reading by Clerk Today
Kucinich, the bill’s author, will move to refer in his quest to get hearing before Committee on the Judiciary
WASHINGTON - July 15 - A single Article of Impeachment of President Bush, which alleges that Mr. Bush sent the nation to war under the false pretenses, will be brought to the floor of the House this afternoon. Its sponsor, U.S. Representative Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), will rise to refer the bill to the Committee on the Judiciary. Kucinich has long been pressing for Impeachment hearings. He previously introduced 35 articles relating to President Bush and three articles relating to the Vice President.

Kucinich, under the rules of the House governing questions of privilege, read the Impeachment resolution before the House last week. Today the Clerk will officially read it into the record as a bill, it will be given a number and then will be subject to parliamentary motions. If Kucinich is successful, the bill will be referred to committee rather than tabled. Last week Speaker Pelosi, for the first time, indicated an interest in committee hearings on President Bush's abuse of executive power, including the issues that Kucinich raised. "If it is tabled, I will bring another Impeachment resolution back this week," said Kucinich. "Our Constitution is being destroyed. We are losing our nation to a war based on lies. I am determined to get this bill to committee for a hearing," he said. "The President has conducted the affairs of the nation in a manner which cries out for justice and it is the Constitutional obligation of Congress to check his wanton abuses of U.S. and international law. We have troops whose lives were put on the line because the President told them Iraq was a threat to the United States and it was not. The loss of lives of our troops and of innocent Iraqi civilians is a direct result of the lies this president told to Congress. He must be held accountable." The Article of Impeachment alleges that President Bush falsely told the nation that it had no other choice to go to war because Iraq was an imminent threat in possession of weapons of mass destruction, and that the President had repeatedly implied that Iraq had abetted al Qaeda in its devastating attack of 9/11. Kucinich, in his Article, cited documents which assert the White House knew the statements were false at the time they were made.
