I headed back home, New Orleans, for the first time since the storms. I was only there for two days, spending my time with family. More than a year has passed and there has been growth, change, progress and neglect. My mom has moved to Gert Town near Xavier and it seems that maybe three houses on her block are occupied. The rest sit like discarded paper cups, marked with spray-painted symbols. They have significant meaning those X's and numbers. I don't want to know what they mean. We drove to around mid-city & uptown, seeing the water marks, the holes in the landscape and the tiny signs of regrowth. I visited City Park and gasped as I drove up Carrolton Avenue seeing the museum. You used to not be able to see the museum driving up this way. There were live oaks shielding your sight. Live oaks weren't like decoration they were the solem natives populating the park, now so many of them are gone and the park sits exposed.

The most alarming parts were the empty streets, crossing Carrollton Avenue and not seeing the St. Charles Streetcar, the demolition of the Carrollton Shopping Center and those vacant houses...

These are some of the last pictures taken while I was visiting family in New Orleans last year.
Album: Do you know what it means...
to miss new orleans and miss it each night and day I know I’m not wrong... this feeling’s gettin’ stronger the longer, I stay away. Miss them moss covered vines...the tall sugar pines, where mockin’ birds used to sing and I’d like to see that lazy mississippi...hurryin’ into spring. The moonlight on the bayou.......a creole tune.... that fills the air. I dream... about magnolias in bloom......and I’m wishin’ I was there. Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans, when that’s where you left your heart and there’s one thing more...I miss the one I care for, more than I miss new orleans

Next month, August 11th marks our 1st Anniversary. The first anniversary is traditionally celebrated with paper. To celebrate our anniversary in toto, as a newlywed couple and an interracial couple, I am celebrating Loving Day with my husband and picking-up a few good books:

Virginia Hasn't Always Been for Lovers
Tell the Court I love My Wife

Happy Anniversary to ALL newlywed couples!
