Don't let Congress Contaminate Food Safety Laws

News that more than 100 people have fallen ill from fresh spinach contaminated with E. coli bacteria highlights the need for the government to do MORE to protect the safety of our food. But Congress is heading in the opposite direction by proposing to do away with many of the state laws and regulations that protect the safety of our food.

On July 27, the U.S. Senate held a hearing on the "Uniformity for Food Act," a bill that will put a strait jacket on states' ability to keep milk, seafood and most other food safe for the consumer. The bill nullifies many state food safety or labeling laws that are not "identical" to federal law, including state laws that deal with problems the federal government doesn't even address.

The Food Uniformity Act would wipe out more than 200 laws in all 50 states, many of which have HIGHER safety standards than those outlined in the Food Uniformity Act!

Fortunately, the bill still isn't law. Although it passed the House in March, we have a good chance of defeating it in the Senate. With ever-growing opposition, (including 21 Senators, 39 state Attorney Generals, the Association of Food and Drug Officials, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, several governors, and a host of consumer, public health, and environmental groups) this bill can be defeated.

Stop Putting Profits Over Senior's Health!

Starting September 22nd, tens of thousands of seniors and disabled will find their Medicare prescription drug coverage has temporarily run out--leaving many to go without needed medicines.

Why? Congress created a "donut hole" where people are left with no help after Medicare spends a certain amount on their medicines. Those who fall into this coverage hole will have to pay nearly $3,000 out of their pockets before coverage kicks in again.

But if Congress negotiated lower drug prices, this coverage hole could be eliminated. The Department of Veterans Affairs negotiates drug prices and gets savings of up to 46%, Medicare can do the same!

The deadline is Sept. 29th: Don't let Congress end their legislative session without giving seniors and taxpayers a better deal! Tell Congress to fix Medicare Part D, so the health of seniors and taxpayers--not the profits of drug companies, comes first!

Tell Congress to Reject John Bolton's Nomination

John Bolton. Not again.

At a time of growing global crises, the United States needs a strong leader at the United Nations who can advance international cooperation. Unfortunately, the Bush administration is nominating someone we already know is not up to the job. In 2005, the Bush administration nominated John R. Bolton to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. When the Senate refused to approve Bolton because of concerns that he was a poor choice, President Bush used a procedural maneuver to give him the job anyway.

A year later, the Senate's concerns have been proven correct. In his time at the UN, Bolton has pursued a "my way or the highway" strategy that has undermined U.S. foreign policy, alienated allies, and hurt our nation's security. Now the President is re-nominating John Bolton and seeking Senate approval. He is the wrong man for this critical job.

Tell your senators not to approve John Bolton for the vital position of Ambassador to the UN.

Stop the loss of Red Snapper in the Gulf of Mexico

Overfishing has reduced red snapper populations to less than 3 percent of their historic levels. This is a serious threat to the long-term health of the Gulf of Mexico. It's bad for the marine ecosystem, fishermen, and the coastal economies that depend on sustainable fishing.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council has repeatedly delayed taking action. This is part of a pattern of mismanagement that has gone on for over a decade, and has resulted in the depletion of red snapper. The Council has once again ignored the advice of its scientists and public testimony supporting improved stewardship.

President Bush's Commission on Ocean Policy recently identified overfishing as one of the greatest threats to our oceans and stressed that we must end this destructive practice in order to have healthy oceans for the future.

Overfishing must be ended. Where the Gulf Fisheries Council has failed the Dept. of Commerce must act. Urge the Secretary of Commerce to act now to stop the chronic overfishing of severely depleted red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico before the start of the fishing season in 2007.

Wal-Mart: Stop Stomping On Our Free Speech!

First there was Wal-MartSucks.Com, a Web site created by a private citizen to criticize Wal-Mart. It caught the eye of executives in the giant corporation who unsuccessfully tried to close down the site down for four years.

Now Wal-Mart is doing it again. This time it is using legal tactics to intimidate a Web site operator and try to close down a Web site called walqaeda.com because it also is critical of the corporation.

Wal-Mart, lawyers and their vast resources are attempting to bully and silence critics across America. But free speech - on the Internet and off - is critical to us all.

Send a letter to Wal-Mart telling them to to stop stomping on free speech!

Make Sure Women Can Get Their Prescription for Birth Control Filled!

It's common sense that women should have ready access to their doctor-prescribed birth control. Unfortunately, the anti-choice movement, spearheaded by groups like Pharmacists for Life, disagrees.

According to Karen Brauer, president of Pharmacists for Life, birth control pills are out of bounds while Viagra prescriptions are not. She won't fill prescriptions for the morning-after pill and has lectured women about daily birth control pills. Yet she readily fills Viagra prescriptions and has claimed, "I helped a whole lot of old married men get lucky."

We want Congress to change all that. The bipartisan Access to Legal Pharmaceuticals Act would ensure that every woman in every state can get her prescription for birth control filled, whether or not an individual pharmacist has an objection.

Support this commonsense measure by signing the petition!

Don't Let Idaho Kill Endangered Wolves

Hundreds of wolves are at risk in Idaho, where in 2001 legislators passed a measure calling for the elimination of wolves "by any means necessary." The State has recently asked for permission to kill up to 75% of the wolves within the Lolo District of Clearwater National Forest and in an area where they are now protected as an endangered species. And, they want to repeat the slaughter in the Lolo District every year for the next five years.

Most unsettling is that Idaho would like to kill 3 out of 4 wolves regardless of the wolves' history of interaction with humans and livestock. That means that wolves that have never done anything to harm livestock or people could be killed.

Once hunted, trapped and poisoned to extinction in Idaho, wolves have made a remarkable recovery. An estimated 512 wolves, including 36 breeding packs, are a critical part of Idaho's ecosystems. And, contrary to anti-wolf extremists' claims, the wolves are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations.

Help us stop anti-wolf extremists and save the wolves – Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife to deny Idaho's request to kill wolves.

Protect Independent TV, News, and Radio. Stop Media Consolidation!

Big media companies are lobbying the FCC to rewrite our media ownership rules, which currently limit how many local media outlets a given company can control in every town.

Vying for more market control, these conglomerates want to overturn current protections, particularly the rule on "newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership." This rule prevents companies from owning the major daily newspaper and one or two broadcast TV stations in the same town.

If ownership limits are eliminated, ONE media company could potentially own the major daily newspaper, at least EIGHT radio stations and THREE or more television stations in the same town. When big media companies own most of the radio, TV, newspapers in town, the media outlets drift away from serving local needs and air fewer local voices and opinions.

Join Consumer's Union in telling the FCC to stop media consolidation! Be part of the official record, and urge the FCC and Congress to ensure that we have reasonable media rules that ensure diversity, localism and competition.
