Today the CPSC issued a recall for Aqua Dots after children fell seriously ill after eating them. Aqua Dots are tiny beads that fuse together to form artworks after they come in contact with water. Apparently the chemical used to prevent water-soluble glues from becoming sticky before they are needed breaks down to become GHB- a banned date rape drug- when swallowed. The New York Times traces the story from the first incident on Oct. 5 to the recall issued today.

Earlier this week Fisher-Price -which is owned by Mattel- issued a recall of its Laugh and Learn kitchens because children could choke on several small, detachable parts. This was Mattel's fifth large scale recall in four months. Meanwhile, Amazon.com pulled the Fisher-Price medical kit off their website because an article in Consumer Reports raised concerns about the possible level of lead in the toy's blood pressure cuff.

Last week a Washington Post article revealed that top officials at the CPSC repeatedly went on costly trips at industry expense. Acting Chairman Nancy Nord publicly defended their review process but ethics experts called their review process weak and superficial. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) has introduced the "Restoring Truth in Regulator Travel Act" to end all travel by federal regulators at the expense of industries they regulate.

This month we are launching our Corporate Safety Challenge Campaign to convince America's corporations to improve their practices and persuade our government to hold wrongdoers accountable.

Ethiopian shepherd girl
Female genital cutting (FGC), also called female circumcision, has affected more than 135 million women and girls worldwide. The cutting usually takes place between the ages of 4 and 12 and can cause serious complications including severe bleeding, infection, long-term difficulties with intercourse and childbirth, and even death.

Working with community leaders, CARE has already made progress in ending female genital cutting. Now we need the help of people like you.

By signing this petition today, you'll be raising awareness and taking a stand to stop the painful practice of female genital cutting. Your name will be added to a list that will demonstrate to key decision makers and change agents just how strong the opposition against FGC is.

We must do all we can to save these girls from a lifetime of pain and suffering. Start by taking a stand against FGC. Sign today.

Operation Parakeet

The Issues

Forty years ago, bright-green South American parrots appeared along Connecticut's coast, refugees of the exotic pet trade. Now, these hardy birds — monk parakeets, in common parlance — have carved out an ecological niche for themselves.

In November, 2005, Connecticut's United Illuminating Company, in cooperation with the USDA, started destroying Monk Parakeet nests and gassing the birds living there. The USDA agents, who killed birds and animals at taxpayer's expense for private industry, planned to use Connecticut's program as a test case.

Friends of Animals is currently pursuing a legal judgment to ensure that UI is required to implement routine maintenance and prevent nesting, and a permanent injunction against the capturing and killing of the monk parakeets. We also support Rep. Richard F. Roy's (D-Milford) proposed bill that would take monk parakeets off the state's invasive species list, in an effort to protect them from further eradication efforts. This bill has been unanimously approved by the Legistlature's Environment Committee and will be considered by the General Assembly.

Get Involved

Build a nest Horrified by the roundups, Connecticut residents began hosting alternative nesting platforms for any birds that escaped the Company's dragnet. We're happy to provide instructions on how you can build one for your yard. Speak out in support of Monk Parakeets Supporters should feel empowered to speak out, courteously but firmly, for the birds' freedom. To obtain sample letters and contact information, click here. Donate to Operation Parakeet We can't defend the rights of these beautiful creatures without the support of people like you. Please consider making a donation.
