About Veganism

what is a VEGAN? A vegan (pronounced VEE-gun) is someone who, for various reasons, chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products. While vegetarians choose not to use flesh foods, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals.

why VEGAN? Veganism, the natural extension of vegetarianism, is an integral component of a cruelty-free lifestyle. Living vegan provides numerous benefits to animals' lives, to the environment, and to our own health–through a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Veganism, the natural extension of vegetarianism, is an integral component of a cruelty-free lifestyle.

Despite the common belief that drinking milk or eating eggs does not kill animals, commercially-raised dairy cows and egg-laying chickens, whether factory-farmed or 'free range,' are slaughtered when their production rates decline. Learn more.

Animal agriculture takes a devastating toll on the earth. It is an inefficient way of producing food, since feed for farm animals requires land, water, fertilizer, and other resources that could otherwise have been used directly for producing human food. Learn more.

The consumption of animal fats and proteins has been linked to heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and a number of other debilitating conditions. Cows' milk contains ideal amounts of fat and protein for young calves, but far too much for humans. Learn more.

Dear Prime Minister Harper and Honourable Government Officials Of Canada:

I urge you to terminate the government-subsidized slaughter of seals. If
Canada resumes its seal hunt in March 2008, I renew my pledge to boycott
Canadian seafood and tourism.

In the last two years, 98% of seals killed ranged from 2 weeks to 3 months
in age. During the annual ambush on whelping grounds, pups are gunned down,
bludgeoned, kicked, and thrashed with hakapiks. Some are left to rot on the
ice floes.

Last year, sealers killed 215,000 seals, even as more pups perished amid
melting ice. Global warming threatens to deplete ice fields in the Gulf of
St. Lawrence and off Newfoundland where harp seals breed. If Canadian
authorities intend to initiate "real action" on global warming, they should
phase-out this unsustainable hunt rather than inflate kill quotas.

It's time to close a contentious industry. In January 2008, the Fur
Institute of Canada's Bruce Williams told The Canadian Press the sealing
trade is in "crisis" due to anticipated seal import bans in Germany, Italy
and Austria. Belgium and Holland have already enacted bans on seal goods.

As you know, the European Commission is considering a ban throughout the
European Union. Ironically, Canadian Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn
recently interpreted a scientific review from the European Food and Safety
Authority (EFSA) to mean Canada "upholds the...humaneness of hunting
practices and techniques." In fact, EFSA's report reveals critical flaws in
Canada's Marine Mammal Regulations with regard to animal welfare.

In one of several examples, EFSA recommends seals not be moved, gaffed or
hauled until confirmed dead or irreversibly unconscious. Canadian law
presently lets hunters hook seals without verifying unconsciousness or
death. Photographic documentation depicts sealers dragging alert animals
with boathooks. A team of impartial veterinarians once determined 42% of
examined seals failed to become insensible from cranial injury. They
concluded the seals were cognizant when skinned.

Since ethical concerns do not seem to influence policy, I reiterate my
commitment to the international boycott of Canadian seafood and tourism. In
the U.S. alone, seafood exports bring billions to Canada's economy.
Conversely, the seal hunt has little financial relevance in Newfoundland,
where most sealers reside. Sealers fish the rest of the year. Sealing
generates a minute portion of their livelihoods.

The hunt lacks ecological, financial or ethical justification. Though
officials have used the decline of cod populations in the North Atlantic as
grounds to kill seals, there is no conclusive evidence linking harps seals
to diminishing cod. Over-fishing is the likely culprit, as noted in past
statements from the government's own scientists.

Polls indicate most Americans and Europeans disapprove of the seal hunt,
with many prepared to boycott Canadian seafood until it ends. Please
permanently cancel the Canadian seal hunt.

Thank you,

After the July 2007 killings of endangered mountain gorillas, possibly by people involved in the illegal charcoal trade, a mobile antipoaching force stayed close to gorillas in Virunga National Park. But the Democratic Republic of the Congo's parks authority, ICCN, must keep the animals safe when these guards are needed elsewhere. Nairobi-based WildlifeDirect—founded by anthropologist Richard Leakey—helps outfit rangers and supplement their government salaries. The group's website hosts blogs where rangers and others post news and pictures from the field. More groups working together to protect these gorillas include:

International Gorilla Conservation Program
This coalition works with the governments of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda.

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund
Founded by the gorilla researcher murdered in 1985, this organization helps care for young gorillas like the one whose mother was killed in July.

Zoological Society of London
In addition to helping supplement rangers' salaries, the ZSL works with D.R. Congo's park authority to help manage Virunga National Park as a whole.

Frankfurt Zoological Society
FZS has trained and equipped hundreds of rangers; it also provides aircraft to help the ICCN monitor gorillas and direct antipoaching forces from the air.

Boycott 2008 Bloody Beijing Olympics-Dog Culls, Fur & Dafur

----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
Please Help Save Pets In Shelters & From Abuse Thx
Date: Jun 20, 2007 5:08 AM

Spread the word-if you don't boycott then you support all of this:

This is what your supporting when you take part/watch the Olympics next year ~ now you know the facts.. what are you going to do about it? I'm writing today to report an old bad news: another large scale dog culling started on June 10 in Changshou, Chongqing. Yes, Chongqing again! The origin was a death of a man who was bited by a black dog who believes carried rabies virus. The man got the rabies bacterin shot immediately and died when he got the final shot - the fifth shot. Nobody knows he died because of the bite or the poor quality of the domestic bacterin.
And nobody knows where the black dog is now. The Changshou District Government has announced publicly that because of the death, they're going to kill all the dogs in Changshou area- dogs with owner or homeless dogs. Total amount is nearly 20,000. PLEASE, send petition letters to the following fax number: +0086-23-4023 1484. It's an automatic fax number of the Changshou District Government's office. God, Buddha, please help these innocent dogs!!! ============================================== China is poisoning dogs, please read here:

Stop China from the continuing slaughter of dogs and cats Target: Xuan Chaun, Beijing 2008 Olympics Sponsor: Linda Rogers China has citizens there and people on every continent up in arms over China's mandate to the residents to turn in their dogs to police no later than March 16th. After that date, if dogs are not turned in they will be taken by police-force. The pets along with every stray are going to be slaughtered to what they believe will eliminate the city's rabies problem. The saddest part of this story is it has been going on for quite some time. Hong Kong- All pet dogs will be killed in a district of the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing as part of an anti-rabies campaign, the government said. Residents of the city's Wanzhou district have until March 15 to hand over their dogs, according to a directive seen Wednesday on the district's official Web site. "All dogs in the area should be killed. A compulsory cull phase will begin after March 16. The forced cull will be carried out by the police." the directive said. The statement said government guard dogs and those animals kept for research institutions, military and commercial purposes would be spared. Officials have rounded up dogs in other cities, such as Bejing, as they crack down on strays and unregistered pets. A spokesman at Wanzhou's Health Department refused to comment about the cull. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper on Wednesday quoted a Wanzhou health official, Ran Hua, as saying the move would combat rabies in the area. He said three cases have been reported within the last year, and the paper said one person died last month. On August 9, 2006 The Humane Society of the United States offered China $100,00 to vaccinate dogs against rabies if it promises to immediately stop their mass slaughter in areas where humans have died from the disease. (News also from But it appears that the offer has not been accepted. A month prior to The Humane Society's offer, a county in the southern province of Yunnan physically beat to death more than 50,000 dogs. These killings have continued since where one statement has reported that 5,400 dogs were clubbed to death on an average day. I have included links to videos. Please, be aware that they are quite hard to watch. It is a tale of a country that has taken the very lazy and barbaric way out of a problem that can be compassionately solved. While these animals are plucked off of the streets, they have also been taken out of their homes, out of their owner's arms, even while out walking them. The links are as follows: Song for Dogs In China Olympic Bloody Games Dog and Cat Killing Fields of China Please, please, remember these videos are quite graphic, especially the last one. But, these are events that are happening today. This is what signatures are needed for. It is too late to save what has happened, but we can save the future generations of dogs and cats!! The petitions will be sent to each and every known Chinese newspapers and broadcasting website. They will also be sent to the Bejing 2008 Olympic website as well. What we want is simple. Implement a plan for all animals to receive vaccinations, a policy for all people to register their pets along with the proper vaccinations, if the laws are not being followed : fine the owners, do not murder the innocent. If any animal is found to have rabies to implement humane ways of putting the individual animal down, not every animal within a certain mile radius. As far as animals being used as food there are humane ways of slaughter. ============================================= Humane Society International Condemns the Slaughter of Dogs in China ============================================= Humane Society Acts to End China Dog Killings The Humane Society of the United States (HSU has offered to pay for effective rabies control programs in China conditional upon the government's termination of its mass dog killing programs. Offering $100,000 to the government of China, the offer comes in response to the clubbing and killing of 50,000 dogs in the Yunnan Province. Rabies cases are on the rise in China, with more than 2,000 people dying from the disease each year. Only 3 per cent of the country's dogs are vaccinated against rabies. The World Health Organization has stated that indiscriminate mass killing is not a means of effective animal control, and instead emphasizes the need for vaccination programs. The HSUS sharply criticized the killings in a letter to Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong last week, and this week offered the organization's help to develop a more effective and humane response to rabies cases. "There are far better ways of addressing rabies control to promote the safety of your citizens, the good reputation of China and the welfare of the dogs," Pacelle wrote. The HSUS is making this offer contingent on having "the full co-operation of the relevant national and local authorities in China and Jining City and an understanding that mass and indiscriminate dog killing programs will be terminated immediately," Pacelle said. ============================================== Join IDA in Protesting the Chinese Cat and Dog Fur Trade Americans love their companion animals, so people are understandably horrified and outraged when they hear that cats and dogs are being killed and skinned alive in China so that their fur can be made into clothes, fashion accessories and toys. A recent Chinese fur farm investigation documented dogs and cats stuffed into wire-mesh cages and exposed to harsh weather while being transported long distances across the countryside. Some of these animals still wore collars and nametags, indicating that they were stolen from their guardians not long ago. Upon arrival, they were thrown from the tops of trucks still in their cages to smash on the ground 20 feet below, further traumatizing the animals and breaking their bones. Fur ranch workers were also videotaped laughing while peeling the raw, bloody skin from the bodies of cats and dogs who were still clearly alive and conscious. Many dog and cat guardians have contacted IDA asking us what they can do to stop these atrocities from happening, so we would now like to tell people about a new tactic in our campaign to stem this carnage. The Chinese pet products industry is very profitable: it is larger than their toy and candy industries combined, and it brings much more money to the booming Chinese economy than cat and dog fur sales. This makes China vulnerable to a boycott that will hit them where it really counts: their bottom line. As part of our campaign against the Chinese cat and dog fur industry, we are urging all animal lovers not to buy any products sold in pet stores labeled "Made In China" until the Chinese Government initiates and enforces meaningful legal humane standards to regulate the fur industry. We are also asking pet store owners across the country to refuse to stock these items in the first place. IDA urges everyone to never buy anything with fur on it, including cat and dog toys, because all fur products are made from the dead bodies of animals who suffered - no matter what species they are or what country they were killed in. We are using our campaign against the Chinese cat and dog fur industry to help people understand that animals like foxes, minks and raccoons suffer just as much as cats and dogs exploited by the fur industry. Most people automatically understand that abuse of cats and dogs is wrong, so reminding them that other animals are living, feeling creatures just like our animal companions sensitizes them to the way other species are treated on fur ranches. What you Can Do 1/ Speak out against the fur trade with other IDA activists at our upcoming protests. Consult IDA's Action Calendar for the dates, times and locations of our demonstrations against the Chinese cat and dog fur trade, as well as who to contact for more information. 2/ If you can't make it to one of IDA's demonstrations, plan one of your own at a Chinese Consulate in your area. Click here to find the one nearest you. You can also hand out IDA's anti-fur campaign materials on any crowded street corner in your area, or leave a few flyers in places where concerned people are likely to read them, like your local coffee shop or health food store. E-mail IDA at for free copies of our new flyer, or click here to print copies at home. 3/ Please sign a petition urging the Chinese Government to pass National Animal Welfare Laws. 4/ Tell the pet store owners and managers in your community that you are boycotting products made in China as a protest against the Chinese cat and dog fur trade, and urge them to join the boycott by refusing to sell toys or any other products (like bowls, leashes, etc.) that are manufactured in China. If the owners or managers want proof that cats and dogs are being killed for fur in China, write to IDA at, and we will send you some of our materials, including a video and brochures. 5/ China is a large producer of Aquarium products. Please do not purchase pet products made in China. Following is a list of Chinese pet products manufacturers: 1. Tetra (Aquarium Products) 2. Wuxi Ganlu Sound Toy Factory & "Mannapet" Brand Plush Dog Toys & Beds 3. Xiamen Sundog Import and Export Co. Ltd. 4. Yangzhong Jiangya Artware Co. Ltd. 5. Zhongshan Jia Ying Metal Products Co. Ltd. 6. Shanghai Seahow International Trade Co. Ltd. 7. Pingyang Kongying Pet Products Co. Ltd. 8. Hang Zhou Tian Yuan Pet Products Factory 9. Hai Feng (Aquarium Products) 10. Guangzhou Qian Hu Aquarium & Pets 6/ Please write a letter to the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. urging China to enact an animal welfare law that will prohibit the cruel handling of dogs, cats and other animals at markets and during transportation. His Excellency Zhou Wenzhong Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Embassy of the People's Republic of China 2300 Connecticut Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20008 202-328-2574 202-328-2582 (fax) ============================================== Peta Take Charge China's Shocking Dog and Cat Fur Trade PETA recently conducted an undercover investigation into the Chinese dog and cat fur trade to show you what the industry is so desperate to hide. Even our veteran investigators were horrified at what they found: Millions of dogs and cats in China are being bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, and strangled with wire nooses so that their fur can be turned into trim and trinkets. We have to warn you: What you're about to see may make you sick to your stomach.
