Around 1,300 cats that were rescued from the dinner table are facing an uncertain future as animal activists ponder their fate in north China's Tianjin Municipality.

The health and survival of the animals were also concerns, a pet lover surnamed Wang, leader of the rescue, told Xinhua Thursday.

The cats had been locked up in iron cages at a store in Tianjin in preparation for shipping to meat dealers in the southern province of Guangdong before they were rescued by more than 100 pet lovers and animal welfare volunteers from Tianjin and Beijing on Tuesday.

The number of rescued felines was previously reported as 800, but volunteers found 1,300 alive and a small number of dead kittens and a dead pregnant female, Wang said.

"But we may have celebrated too soon. The traders injected the cats with stimulants to keep them alive during transportation. According to my experience, some weak cats will die as soon as the effect wears off in seven to 10 days," Wang said.

Pet lovers and animal welfare volunteers are keeping the cats in hundreds of cages, each containing three of the same sex. Local people have donated food and blankets for the animals.

Two days after their rescue, all the cats were still being housed in three abandoned classrooms of Asia Primary School, in Tianjin's Hongqiao district, waiting for claimants or would-be adopters, Wang said.

Asked where the cats would go, Lu Di, chairwoman of the China Small Animal Protection Association based in Beijing, said "A base for abandoned animals will be established in Tianjin to keep the cats."

Lu told Xinhua that a "1-yuan donation" campaign would be launched nationwide to fund bases for abandoned animals in 10 cities, such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Tianjin, where small-animal trading was common.

"The number of rescued animals is numerous, while the accommodation at the base in Tianjin is rather limited," said Wang. "Perhaps no more than 20 percent of the rescued cats can be held. But if we set the remaining 80 percent free, they will probably be caught and traded again."

On the 23rd, a netizen on “Mao Mi You Yue BBS” posted an urgent help needed post: Over 800 kitties are caged in a compound at Tianjin Nankai district, facing the misfortune of being slaughtered and sold by cat traffickers. Several tens of netizens and cat-lovers immediately reached the location, launching a cat rescue operation.

As a result of unsuccessful negotiations with the cat traffickers, the compound’s gates were locked. 40 “cat friends” disregarded the cold and remained outside the compound overnight. The next day, another 70 plus Beijing cat friends rushed to and arrived at Tianjin. After the cat friends anxiously waited a day, the cat traffickers still had not reappeared.  After coordinating, yesterday night, finally with the help of police, the caged kitties were transported by specially arranged vehicles to temporary accommodations in an unused school classroom, with 30 volu

with 30 volunteers responsible for taking care of them. Tianjin City’s Animal Health Supervision Authority also sent relevant personnel, to conduct disinfect/sterilize the classroom serving as temporary accomodations for the kitties and the transport vehicles.

As a result of not having any food or water for several days, over half of the kitties’s health are extremely weak, and several kitties have already died.

After the kitties had adjusted and recovered, the volunteers will begin accepting registrations for adoption.

Tianjin retired teacher Yang Xiaoyun began rescuing stray cats and dogs over 10 years ago. Presently, she has adopted over 400 stray cats and dogs, having sold her own house, and relying on a rented space. With more and more stray cats and dogs, Yang Xiaoyun has already begun feeling inadequate, overwhelmed.

I also want to tell those caring people, your donations Teacher Yang has completely used on the little animals. In consulting with Teacher Yang, I have also seen that she does not have the time to give you a detailed breakdown of your donations. Caring people, we very much understand you care about the little animals, but please understand that a 60+ year old old lady is already extremely inadequate for taking care of this many kitty-cats and puppy-dogs every day. It is not that she is unwilling to annonce how your donations are used, it is that she truly does not have the time to organize [the information]. Just preparing meals for the little animals every day, she is already overwhelmed, so may you all please be a little more lenient and understanding!

The 700 cats that were rescued on Nov 2nd 2009 in Shanghai are yearning
for your help in any way!


Please see the photos below were taken on Nov 5th at a temporary place
where the 700 rescued cats stayed since midnight Nov 2nd.

1. Cat food donated by a loving lady.

2-9. Several loving people stayed there at night with the poor cats in a
suburb of Shanghai and they have shifts to take care of 700 suffering
cats.

10-11. This white and grey cat is so lovely, she likes to be held, and
wears a collar with a bell. She is certainly someoneâ?Ts loving family
member before she got trapped by the evil.

12-13. Some of the cats are still scared and try to hide up in high
places.

14. Some of the cats got sick and the loving rescuers became vets and
treated the cats themselves.

15. It was discovered that a female cat had just given birth, and still
had breast milk ready to feed her babies when she was taken away. How
could her babies live with their motherâ?Ts milk?

16. This tabby cat gave birth to four kittens. The arrival of the new
kittens caught the rescuers unprepared.

17. This ginger cat was already neutered with the mark on her ear.

18-19 They found out that this white catâ?Ts leg got injured.

20-21. This black cat is so cute, active and cool!

22-25. This little tabby is making everyone happy and she continuously
rubs your leg. She would even be jealous of other cats!

26-29. Look at their beautiful eyes!  They absolutely should not be
treated like meat and eaten by evil people in South of China!!!

This is another e-mail form Charlene sent to me last summer, answering my questions about the shelter :

We are a non-profit organization and we are the only no-kill, cage-free shelter in our area.  Currently we have over eighty animals in our shelter.  We rescue homeless, stray and abandoned animals and provide them with veterinary care, immunizations, spay or neuter, food and housing until a permanent home can be found for them.  The homeless animal population in our county is astronomical.  Thousands of animals are euthanized here every year. 

          I started the shelter because I lived in an apartment complex where people would throw out their animals as they moved out of their apartments.  We started feeding as many animals as we could and, when the number kept growing, we decided to get a place where we could house them and care for them and try to find them homes.  Every time we have an article in the paper or a news story on the local television stations about the shelter, the result is that dozens of people call us, wanting to bring us more animals.

          It is very hard to get the cats adopted but we are trying everything we can think of, to get the word out that we have beautiful, healthy animals available for adoption.  We are planning an adoption fair at which people can come and tour the shelter and see the animals.  For people who cannot adopt an animal, we offer the option to sponsor a cat while it is at the shelter, by donating $25.00 per month to help care for a cat they choose. 

          We also try to sell donated items to generate some funds for the shelter expenses.  It is very hard but very worthwhile.  Please put us in your prayers.  I am sending some pictures in the attachment.

About 2 months ago a cat (Tori) was dumped at a barn close to our house. She had been declawed and her fur was so matted that we had to shave most of it off. Fleas were all over her. Right now she is staying in a tack room but needs someplace (indoors) ASAP! My mom is allergic to cats so she can't come inside. I've taken her to Spay and Neuter Kansas City and Crain Veterinary Center so she is spayed, current on shots, negative for feline leukemia and vaccinated for it, wormed and I got her teeth cleaned. We're guessing she's about 5 years old and she's a very sweet girl. I'm fostering her through Furry Kids Refuge http://www.FurryKidsRefuge.org and I try to get her to all the adoption events but she really does need a better life. My name is Jan Puckett. Carrol Crocker is my sister and
she is in dire need of help with her animals. Carrol lives
in Rainsville, AL, a rural, farming community. She has 5+
acres which was our grandparents home place.

Carrol has dedicated the last 10 years or so to caring for
and rescuing neglected, abused and homeless cats and dogs.
She lives on a meager Eastern Airlines retirement and Social
Security Disability. She goes lacking some months but her
animals do not. She has rescued animals but also, members or
her community as well as Rainsville city employees have
brought to her animals found while performing their city
duties. The city fathers knew this was taking place and
never said anything......until last year. The mayor has
been recorded in court papers saying, "We knew what
was going on but we had no where else to take the
animals." Now, he wants her shelter abolished. Keep
in mind there is no ordinance as to how many pets a person
can have and there is no leash law. The city has taken her
to court and won. The judge has ruled Carrol can have no
mone than 3 pets. She has appealed his ruling and the
higher court has recently upheld the local judge's
decision.

She is trying to place her dogs but unfortunately the
shelters around here are full and do not have room for more.
She has been calling all over the US trying to save her
dogs. She needs help desperately.

Carrol does not want anything for herself and politely refused any offer of help yesterday for any personal needs. She does not want anything except that her animals are to be safe and get good homes. I think this is why her story has truly struck a chord for all of us to see the selflessness of her efforts to help and protect her animals. The mere fact that she is making the best of the situation in living arrangements that many of us would find ourselves overwhelmed by, is enough in of itself. She only wants these animals to be safe - nothing more.

Today, Jane went back to see her and brought her a mattress to replace her current bedding as well as a portable propane hot water heater from Shari. She additionally sent over about 20 bags of dog food and some cat food as well.

Some have asked what the deadline is before the county begins the process of confiscating the animals and the answer to that is unclear at this time. Though the local courts have ruled in the favor of the county, Carrol’s attorney is appealing that decision in the State Supreme Court. We will, in the near future obtain more information on the status of her current case and update at that time.

There have been offers today from individuals/ rescues to take in some of the animals. Angel’s Gate Rescue in NY has offered their assistance to possibly take in some special needs or aged dogs in need. We are far from there but, have made progress and grateful for the very kind emails offering help.

A friend of mine contacted me with an urgent request. Due to horrible circumstances in her life she is currently staying at a shelter, and there are several groups of feral cats there as well.  She has been recycling cans and bottles to buy food and medicine for them. Are there any Vets/ Activists/ Fosters in the Bakersfield CA area that can assist her?  Several cats and kittens need vet care (eye infections and skin problems) and an agressive spay and neuter program is desperately needed. Some kittens are socialized and need foster/adoptive homes.
