June 2009—A shocking dog massacre is happening in Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province, China. More than 20,000 dogs—many of whom were registered and vaccinated household pets—have reportedly died a brutal death due to government orders.
After achieving success in stopping government-mandated culls in several major cities, Chinese animal protection groups are mobilizing to stop this inhumane practice across the country. International support for Chinese grassroots efforts is vital to speeding up policy change and making dog culling history.
Each year in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest, black and grizzly bears are cruelly killed by trophy hunters as they emerge from hibernation and forage for food. Orphaned cubs are left behind, condemned to a slow death by starvation. Even threatened grizzlies are not protected from those who kill for entertainment -- nearly 90 percent of all grizzly bears killed in the province of British Columbia are killed by trophy hunters.
Tropical deforestation accounts for one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the transportation sector worldwide. The biggest driver of deforestation in the Amazon is Brazil’s cattle sector, and one of this sector’s biggest businesses is the leather industry.
Please send a message to brands like Nike, Timberland, Adidas, Reebok, Clark’s, and Geox that you care about where their leather comes from and that it cannot come from Amazon deforestation.
On the 22 June 2009 over 80 governments will meet to decide the future of the world’s whales. More than 25 years after the global ban on commercial whaling was passed, these intelligent mammals are in danger once more.
In the next year alone Iceland, Japan and Norway plan to kill a total of 2,500 whales.
Each individual animal will face exploding harpoons and rifle fire, and ultimately an agonising death. Many hundreds will suffer from horrific explosion wounds for up to an hour – or even more – before finally dying.
There is no humane option for whalers. The sheer size of the animals, combined with the challenges posed by the ocean hunting environment, means there is simply no humane way to kill whales at sea.
Protest the cruelty of whaling at this strategic moment!
