I’ve got news to report regarding our efforts to stop researchers from acquiring dogs and cats from shelters. We have learned that soon, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will no longer allow researchers who receive federal funds to purchase cats or dogs from class B “random source” dealers. These class B dealers sell animals who are bought from shelters or adopted from “Free to a Good Home” scenarios. They have even been known to steal animals from private backyards.

This is a huge step forward, but we still need your help. The ban on using cats from class B dealers does not go into effect until October, and the use of dogs will not be phased out until 2015. Additionally, while we are thrilled that the federal government will be phasing out the use of most shelter dogs and cats, class B dealers will still be able to sell them to privately funded research institutions.

Please contact Congress and urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor The Pet Safety and Protection Act, H.R. 2256, a bill that will permanently ban the sale of animals from class B dealers to all U.S. research facilities.

Dogs and cats in animal shelters should be adopted by new companions—not purchased by class B dealers and used in painful experiments. NIH’s new policy will help end the practice of pound seizure, but it will not happen soon enough. That’s why it is so important for you to contact Congress today. When you are done, please forward this message to your friends and family—and share on Facebook and Twitter.

Last week, public outcry forced Amazon.com to pull over one hundred whale and dolphin meat products from its Japanese site. Consumers were outraged that the world's largest online retailer supported the killing of whales and dolphins -- and Amazon.com listened.

But now, Amazon.com is refusing to put a permanent ban in place to protect these animals in the future.

Melissa Sehgal, an Amazon.com customer, is in Taiji, Japan -- the site of an annual dolphin hunt that was exposed in the documentary The Cove. Every day she is witnessing how dolphins are captured and killed, and she wants Amazon.com to help stop it. That's why Melissa started a petition calling on Amazon to never again sell meat from dolphins and whales.

Click here to sign Melissa's petition asking Amazon.com to permanently ban whale, dolphin, and porpoise meat from its sites.

Tens of thousands of dolphins, whales and porpoises are captured and killed for their meat every year in Japan. The method by which they are killed is gruesome. "Rods are hammered into (dolphins) spinal cords to paralyze them," Melissa says. "And then they are dragged by their tails to the butcher house."

But Amazon.com has responded positively and quickly to consumer feedback before. Melissa also knows that further action from the online retailer could impact the trade in dolphin and whale meat since hunts are happening right now. Without an official policy, Amazon.com could start selling whale and dolphin meat again at any time.

Sign Melissa's petition to ask Amazon.com to put a permanent ban in place against selling dolphin, whale, and porpoise meat on its sites.

Thanks for being a change-maker,

- Pulin and the Change.org team

The sex abuse scandal at Penn State is a horrifying example of what can happen when people in positions of power feel they can act without consequence. Pennsylvania is considering strengthening its anti-child abuse bills, but what about kids in the rest of the United States?

Ask your governor to stand up for kids all over America.»

Adults should have a moral obligation to protect the children in their life. But as we saw at Penn State, this isn't always the case.

Each state needs to implement laws strengthening child sexual abuse reporting requirements. We can't let these atrocities happen again.

It's time for the law to pick up where compassion has failed. Save countless numbers of children from suffering at the hands of abusers. »

Thanks for taking action!

Ahmad picked up a bright metal object in a park where he was celebrating his 5th birthday in Lebanon. It was an unexploded cluster bomblet, which blew up in his face, killing him slowly in front of his family.

Three years ago, public pressure pushed through a ban of these cruel bombs. But now the US is lobbying nations to quietly sign a new law that allows their use -- signing the death warrant for thousands of other children. Most countries are still on the fence on how to vote. Only if we raise the alarm across the world can we shame our governments to block this deadly decision.

Positions are being drawn up now. We only have days until countries meet to send our leaders a clear message: stand up for the cluster bombs ban and keep our children safe. Click below to sign the petition -- it will be delivered directly to delegates at the Geneva conference:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/cluster_bombs_ii_b/?vl

Thousands of people -- many of them children -- have been maimed or killed by these bombs. When they are fired, they spray small "bomblets" over a wide area, many of which fail to explode. Years later, people disturb them in their fields or school playgrounds not knowing what they are, and they explode.

In 2008, over half of the world’s governments outlawed these weapons by signing the Convention on Cluster Munitions. But now, shockingly, countries like France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK, who all signed the Convention, are under pressure from the US, China and Russia to run rings round the ban by signing a separate agreement that would allow them to use cluster munitions. Only Norway, Mexico, Austria and a few others are fighting this horror.

Negotiators at the Convention on Conventional Weapons meet in Geneva next week. Most governments don’t really want this protocol and have not said which way they will vote, but they are under severe pressure from the US to comply and will only object if the global public persuades them.

There’s no time to lose -- the conference starts on Monday. Let's call on our governments to reject this deadly and cynical US campaign to legalize cluster killing. Click below to sign the petition and forward this email widely -- we've done it before, let's do it again:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/cluster_bombs_ii_b/?vl

Cluster bombs and land mines were banned because citizens raised the alarm across the world -- with victims and survivors leading the way. For their sakes and to ensure no more lives are lost, let’s not allow these cruel weapons back and join together now to demand a more peaceful world.

With hope,

Alex, Stephanie, Alice, Ricken, Laura, Nicholas, Wissam, and the whole Avaaz team.

Anxiety and fear dissipate quickly when countered with conscious breathing.

The signals our bodies use to tell us we need to cleanse ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally are multifaceted and often mirror symptoms we associate with illness. If we heed these signs, we not only feel better quickly but also stave off poor health before it can start. These quick fixes for common ailments can get you started.

1. Applying pressure to the acupressure point between the thumb and forefinger can release blockages causing pain, tension, and fatigue. You can relieve a headache naturally by squeezing for 20 seconds and releasing for 10 seconds, without letting go, four times.

2. To breathe freely, irrigate your nasal passages with a neti pot and warm salt water. As you clear and soothe the sinuses, congestion associated with allergies or infection will gradually disappear.

3. Apple cider vinegar is a powerful purifying and detoxifying agent. Soaking for 20 minutes in a warm bath infused with two cups of apple cider vinegar pulls toxins from the body and can clear blocked energy.

4. The foods you eat can have a profound impact on your outlook and mood. Eating a small yet satisfying meal rich in complex carbohydrates can lift your spirit and help you let go of feelings of anger, irritability, and depression.

5. Anxiety and fear dissipate quickly when countered with conscious breathing because concentrating on the breath enables you to refocus your attention inward. You can ground yourself and regain your usual calm by taking a series of deep belly breaths as you visualize your feet growing roots that stretch miles down into the earth.

6. Though tuning out can seem counterproductive, a few minutes spent lost in daydreams or listening to soothing music can help you see your circumstances from a new angle when you feel frustrated.

7. If you feel ill health coming on, brew a wellness elixir. Simmer three sliced lemons, one teaspoon freshly grated ginger, one clove freshly minced garlic, and one quarter teaspoon cayenne pepper in five cups water until the lemons are soft and pale. Strain a portion into a mug and add honey by tablespoons until you can tolerate the taste. Drinking this potent mixture of antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal ingredients three times each day can ensure your symptoms never progress into a full-blown illness.

Peace, Love and Well being, Keith.
