START A PETITION 27,000,000 members: the world's largest community for good
Nov 17, 2010

I've decided I should blog about my adventures in starting a nonprofit in California. I'm at the very beginning of the process. In fact, I have completed only Step 1: Reserve a Name.  And, truthfully, I now have to reserve it again, as 60 days have passed. That name is "We Get to Give," and the nonprofit is going to be a discount program for youth mentors, so that when they go out with the kids and teens they mentor, they can get discounts at area businesses.  Basically, it's like a student discount card, but for people who volunteer at already-established youth organizations in Los Angeles.  We hope that it will allow mentors and mentees to participate in activities that mentors might otherwise not be able to afford, and that it will increase the conversation about youth mentoring in the community.

We're currently in the Pepsi Refresh competition, vying for a $5000 grant, and that's been an experience in itself!  We have certainly learned a great deal about Twitter and social networking.  I'll write more about that, and about the steps to form a nonprofit and the help I've been getting, in another entry.  For now, I just wanted to start the blog, see what it looked like, and introduce myself.

I hope you enjoy, and please let me know if you have any questions. Chances are I'll be learning along with you!

All the best,
Emily Aaronson
