I'm really burned up about how the Hyatt Regency has treated Martha and Lorena Reyes, two housekeepers who were fired after protesting the degrading photos of themselves that popped up in the break room. The sisters went on break to find that their faces had been crudely photo-shopped onto the bodies of bikini-clad surfer girls. Martha tore the photos down. Well, who wouldn't? And the hotel's management, instead of apologizing and slapping the hands of the employee who posted these photos, reinstated the photos!
I wasn't born yesterday, and I know you can't wipe out sexual harassment entirely, and I would certainly expect this sort of scenario to play out at some small, fly-by-night enterprise or a sweat shop. But the Hyatt Regency! Please! Their hotels cost billions of dollars to build, and people pay a fortune to stay in them. Would it kill the company to show a little class?
What exactly was management thinking? That the Reyes sisters were easy targets because they need a translator to say how angry they are? That working women have no dignity? That middle-aged women no longer care about their dignity? I'm a middle-aged, working woman, and some days, my dignity is all I have.
