This weekend is the 65th anniversary of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which killed 220,000 (and who knows how many it injured, mutilated, left with trauma, lost livelihoods etc). Also, not too long ago, we commemorated (how many people remembered?) the 24th anniversary of the Chernobyl 'accident'.

And now the British Government is going to spend (well, OUR tax money!) 20 billion GBP on replacing Trident (UK nuclear weapons) and while we have huge financial 'black hole' (OUR tax money) in current nuclear power budget, we're looking at spending more in 'new generation'.

Nuclear is expensive (setup, and many years of decommissioning, containing radiation waste), unsuitable for climate change age (they are huge centralised providers, which is so much more vulnerable than decentralised), it's cruel (is used as weapon, involved in accident, falls in hand of terrorist), not sustainable (uranium non-renewable, dirty to get, concentrated in some highly unstable countries), not just (why should we be able to have them, and others not; we have less incentive to solve things amicably by threatening unreasonable/ disproportionate nuclear weapon), not relevant (learning lessons from WWII could we not have ended world otherwise?).

Whatever the question... nuclear is NOT the answer!

I pray for peace around the world...

A sad indictment of what seems to be our priority setting according to an article in The Guardian:

"Sales of the world's top 100 arms companies totalled $385bn in 2008, an increase of $39bn over the previous year, Sipri [Stockholm international peace research institute] says. This compares with the total $120bn spent on development aid by the world's major industrialised countries in 2008."

Also, if a country now wants aid from the US in order to combat the effects of climate change, it'd better have signed up to the Copenhagen Accord (a non-legally binding document that appeared after no legally binding just agreement could be agreed during the Dec '09 climate negotiations), as also today in the news. And little hope - unless we all do our 2p, collectively and individually! - for a better outcome from Mexico this December.

At least the US army appreciates that peal oil is coming and we'd better prepare, God willing proactively and peacefully! Examples are the Transition movement and permaculture.

Added quote on 22 April as relevant as to our priorities: "The sums in the [UK Government] budget are a start, but they’re dwarfed by the amounts used to subsidise the banks, and are like sending someone out to organize a wedding with only enough money to buy a packet of peanuts.", Andrew Simms, Policy Director and Head of the Climate
Change Programme at the New Economics Foundation, talking about the
Green Investment Bank (found in BFoE mailing list)
