Incineration is the second largest waste disposal method in most countries (after landfill: 'out of sight, out of mind'?!). According to information by Manchester Metropolitan University, in the UK, approximately 5% of household waste, 7.5% of commercial waste, and 2% of industrial waste is disposed of by incineration (and this is set to rise rapidly as countries run out of land fill space or 'holes in the ground'! - e.g. in the UK in 2008, plans for potential incinerator locations exists for approximately 100 sites!). When burning waste, a large amount of energy, carbon dioxide and other potentially hazardous air pollutants is given off.

According to a great organisation, UK Without INcineration (UKWIN), the alternatives to incineration are cheaper, more flexible, quicker to implement and better for the environment (e.g. incineration reduces our ability to reuse or recycle potentially valuable discarded material). Why they haven't been done? They require slightly longer term thinking and understanding who's winner in the short term...

As people of faith we should remember we're being arrogant, not being grateful for God's blessings if we waste resources. Practical solution: reduce, reuse, recycle to avoid creating waste in the first place (have you ever reflected that it's ONLY humans that produce waste; in nature everything gets reused and recycled), then think about what would be most God-conscious way to go about handling waste we produce, let if inform who you elect and remind those elected (local Councillors, MPs ect) to act in the best interest of us all (not just profit of incinerators).
