The following news from Nr 10 reminds me of Ecocide..."The UK Government today granted BP and its partners — Shell, ConocoPhillips and Chevron — approval to proceed with the £4.5 billion Clair Ridge project, the second phase of development of the giant Clair field, west of the Shetland Islands."

So we're in severe financially straightened times but we still have £4.5 BILLION to give away to ruin our planet?! How about trying more win-win solution for economy and planet by investing this in green energy/ jobs? (oh sorry, I forgot about oil lobbying who would lose...) .... the press release says "Clair Ridge project will create hundreds of jobs over the next five years and produce a vital source of domestic oil until around 2050" ... investing £4.5bn in renewable energy will create *more* than hundreds of jobs and provide energy security forever...

Check out this mock trial on ecocide (geocide of the environment/ crimes against the planet)... food for thought!

This month a good (challenging but true) reflection in EMEL Magazine (Issue 69 June 2010): Moving beyond Petroleum by Imam Zaid Shakir. An important quote:
"The real finger of blame should point at each of us. We know the environmental, political, and social consequences of the oil-based civilisation we have allowed to evolve. Yet we have done little to stop it. We Muslims are not exempt in this regard. It is a shame that people associated with the ummah of Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, are responsible for the largest oil spill in history."

A sad indictment of what seems to be our priority setting according to an article in The Guardian:

"Sales of the world's top 100 arms companies totalled $385bn in 2008, an increase of $39bn over the previous year, Sipri [Stockholm international peace research institute] says. This compares with the total $120bn spent on development aid by the world's major industrialised countries in 2008."

Also, if a country now wants aid from the US in order to combat the effects of climate change, it'd better have signed up to the Copenhagen Accord (a non-legally binding document that appeared after no legally binding just agreement could be agreed during the Dec '09 climate negotiations), as also today in the news. And little hope - unless we all do our 2p, collectively and individually! - for a better outcome from Mexico this December.

At least the US army appreciates that peal oil is coming and we'd better prepare, God willing proactively and peacefully! Examples are the Transition movement and permaculture.

Added quote on 22 April as relevant as to our priorities: "The sums in the [UK Government] budget are a start, but they’re dwarfed by the amounts used to subsidise the banks, and are like sending someone out to organize a wedding with only enough money to buy a packet of peanuts.", Andrew Simms, Policy Director and Head of the Climate
Change Programme at the New Economics Foundation, talking about the
Green Investment Bank (found in BFoE mailing list)

Some good news:

The Church of England has sold its shares in Vedanta, an Indian mining company, in protest over a controversial mining project in India that will destroy the livelihoods and spirituality of a mountain tribe. I wish all would invest more ethically, especially faith-based/ faith-inspired investors (note the Church's change of heart came about after a long campaign by locals in India and elsewhere).

A new website, Political Clean Up, is helping lift the lid of some of the 'too cosy' relations between our elected officials and private interests, especially some 'revolving door' appointments. Help them with positive need for change (disclosure: I do know one of the key people behind its initiation)!

With the UK's budget deficit being sky high and the opportunity to make the UK live more within our planetary means, it's an excellent suggestion from the Green Alliance that 12bn GBP can be saved by cutting subsidies on polluting activities (in simple terms: we're using our tax money to slowly and collectively kill ourselves... how obscene is that?)

Some bad news:

Another warning to always be alert as to who has paid for research and/ or any campaign... ask yourself: who's gaining? Oil companies are still paying climate change deniers....

The Muslim green message has some unlikely proponents of the eco-jihad (struggle for the environment)... PLEASE can mainstream, ordinary Muslims help take over ASAP or our beautiful religion will face another smear and backlash. Also, as guardians of Creation (see Quran, e.g. 10:14 and 6: 165) we can't leave things just to the environmentalists.

The bad news is just here to test us, see if we just shrug our shoulders (just like to be arm chair Muslims) or, as Prophet Muhammed said: "Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart - and that is the weakest of faith." (for some guidance on this hadeeth, saying of the Prophet)

God has given us so many gifts, we tend to forget... for example, I like this article (which is not unique, though fossil fuel funded etc sources won't want you to know!) that indeed "shifting the World to 100 percent clean, renewable energy as early as 2030: here are the numbers" IS possible as "most of the technology needed to shift the world from fossil fuel to clean, renewable energy ALREADY EXISTS." (my emphasis, and this fact is contrary to some of the fancy suggestions regarding options on fossil fuel (e.g. so-called 'carbon capture & storage' - sound nice, but NOT proven beyond lab). The 'only' things that stops us is "implementing that technology requires overcoming obstacles in planning and politics." Might help to remind people that of the 100 biggest economic entities, MORE THAN 50 are COMPANIES (NOT countries!), and that of the 10 biggest companies, 7 sell cars and/ or oil... money talks & big money talks a lot...

I've neglected my blog a bit. Actually, I didn't want to repeat myself as whatever caught my attention seemed to be 'same old, same old':

- Big Pharma encouraging 'swine flu panic' (if they truly cared and were honest they wouldn't charge 6 month's salary equivalent for e.g. ordinary Egyptians for their famous Tamiflu or other pills; Egypt is now thinking of closing all schools to avoid epidemic... but what about the kids education then?! & parents )
- organisations starting to talk green/ sustainable, but not walking it, see e.g. Worldbank.

- climate change is getting worse and worse and we continue to ignore it too much, e.g. today health impacts highlighted.

Until there is justice for all... let's keep up our 2p's! (though not always easy, justice does sometimes prevail as in this case of pollution of Africans)

Oil and mining shares are popular (considered 'better' than shares in things like alcohol and gambling). However, across the globe, as mining and oil firms race for dwindling resources, indigenous peoples are battling to defend their lands, in southern Thailand those trying to keep their livelihoods have been branded 'Islamic terrorists' (as they happen to be Muslim). is that a reasonable return for your investment? Even if you don't have shares, your bank (using YOUR money) may still be supporting the destruction of livelihoods around the world. The Corner House has some excellent information. Think about how you can have your money be used according to your ethics. Personally I've changed to the Co-operative Bank (only high street bank in the UK with ethical policy) and also changed electricity provider to Ecotricity.

NB: an update on 14 June, according to an article in The Independent (which does not suprise me at all, unfortunately!) "Secret papers 'show how Shell targeted Nigeria oil protests' Documents seen by The IoS support claims energy giant enlisted help of country's military government"

So try to drive less (use less petrol) and think of the Ogoni people and others affected by our insatiable 'need' for oil next time you fill up.
