I hope you enjoy, benefit from suggestions and ideas to 'go green', to (re-) align our daily life with our duty to take care of Creation because: "He it is Who has placed you as viceroys of the earth and has exalted some of you in rank above others [some are rich/ poor; some are strong/ weak etc so each accountable to his/ her ability], that He may try you in the gifts He has given you. Your Lord is swift to requite (evil), and He verily is Forgiving, Merciful." (Quran, chapter 6, verse 165) - my book '199 ways to please God, how to (re-)align your daily life with your duty of care for Creation' is available (with PayPal, UK delivery; also via Amazon UK and Amazon US). For an idea what it's about, check my summary. Also, if you're on LinkedIn, check my profile there or on Academia.edu. Finances permitting, I would love to spend more time on my PhD on Islam & Environment: comparing the humanitarian aid principle of 'do no harm' with the Islamic principle of 'la darar' (do no harm) with regards to sustainable development.
Some time ago I exchanged some messages with Arwa on Islam and vegetarianism, some of which ended on her website. Finally managed to put up my 2p response on the website, copied hereunder:
Re: "I see the problems of stating that Islam promotes vegetarianism as it simply does not" - I agree the Quran doesn't state 'thou shalt be an exclusive vegetarian'; however, there are at least 4 verses in the Quran which positively encourage the non-animal food blessings...:
6:99 - "(God) is the One Who sent water down from the sky. Therewith We brought forth plants of all kinds and from them the verdure and We brought forth from it the clustered grains, and from the palm-tree its spathes with bunches of dates (hanging) low, the gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates similar and different. Look at their fruit, when they bear it, and their ripening. Verily, in that there are signs for people who believe." 16:10-11 - "(God) is the One Who sends water down from the sky. For you this is a drink and out of it (grow) shrubs in which you let (cattle) graze freely. Therewith for you He makes sown fields, olives, palm-trees, vineyards and all kinds of fruit grow." [the cattle here could be ploughing animals] 50:9-11 - "We caused to grow gardens, grains for harvest, tall palm-trees with their spathes, piled one above the other-sustenance for (Our) servants." 6:141 - "It is He Who produces gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety): eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered. But waste not by excess: for Allah loveth not the wasters."
... and none that encourage meat ... just that certain animals are definitely haram/ forbidden and that if you want to eat those which are not haram, then kill it properly, e.g....:
6:142 - "Of the cattle are some for burden and some for meat: eat what Allah hath provided for you, and follow not the footsteps of Satan: for he is to you and avowed enemy." - Satan mentioned in same sentence as meat eating... so eating too much of it can be easily done, and things like factory farming (where vast majority of meat nowadays available in many countries now comes from!) should be a definite no-no! 22:36 - "The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that you may be grateful. "
Dr Nina Fedoroff, a science and technology adviser to the US state department, in an article in The Times today urges a "radical rethink" of farm practice to meet 21st-century demand for food and that there is a "critical need to get beyond popular biases against the use of agricultural biotechnology".
My 2p: the GM industry and its cronies should stop refering to GM opposition as due to "popular biases" - they are NOT biases: e.g. Austrian Gov't research has proven the negative health impacts of GM food; there are more overweight/ obese people on this planet than hungry people so NO food shortage; NO GM product has shown sustained higher yield; GM HAS caused untold misery on the poor souls/ farmers who were promised big things: more dependency due to sterile seeds, law suits if speaking out against GM for starters. The ONLY winners of GM are Monsanto and delikes. Dr Nina Fedoroff is a plant geneticist... what comes to mind is: if you have a hammer, all your problems look like nails.
And another article today concludes that 'vegetarians are bigger polluters than meat eaters' (sorry, that 'Tofu can harm environment more than meat')... The article refers to a study done for WWF. I agree though with the Vegetarian Society's response that "The figures used in the report are based on a number of questionable assumptions about how vegetarians balance their diet and how the food industry might respond to increased demand." - indeed! For vast majority I know, turning veggie, is not contuing your diet as was & replace meat w 'fake meat', but more generally eat less processed, more varied (I'm almost veggie and rarely eat tofu). And as other commenter mentioned: hamburgers require MANY more resources than veggie burger. Read especially the WWF own summary of one of 3 key actions to take "changing our eating habits – particularly the amount of meat and dairy products we consume."
On the latter, if you live in/ near Birmingham (UK), to learn more, do consider attending the following event: <!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->on Tuesday 23 February Birmingham Vegetarians & Vegans are holding an event entitled 'Do we need to give up meat to end global hunger?' Amanda Baker, PR and media officer of the Vegan Society will put the case for the vegan diet and stock free farming and ready to answer all your questions.
