2009 AIDS Walk Las Vegas April 19, 2009 Aid for AIDS of Nevada has led the AIDS Walk for over eighteen years. Individual Walkers and Walk Team numbers have grown significantly, sponsorships by local businesses and organizations continue to increase, and public awareness rises with every walk.

Last year, more than 7,000 people walked raising over $550,000. Over 250 corporate and community teams raised 70% of the total funds collected. Teams represent some of the leading corporations and organizations in Southern Nevada including MGM Mirage, Macy’s, Focus Property Group, M.A.C Cosmetics, UNLV, Wells Fargo, Penn & Teller and many more.

Today there is newfound hope in the fight against AIDS – but still no cure. Some people with HIV/AIDS are living longer thanks to new therapies. Tragically, the new treatments do not work for everyone, and HIV continues to spread at an alarming rate.

We will walk until that point in time, when AFAN is no longer effective, our services no longer needed and our purpose no longer essential to the solution.

          Why We Still Walk

AIDS Walk Las Vegas 2009 is April 19th.  This year will be the 19th Annual AIDS Walk.  Nineteen years of recognizing a disease that has grown to be a worldwide pandemic.  Individual Walkers and Walk Team numbers have grown significantly, sponsorships by local businesses and organizations continue to increase, and public awareness rises with every walk.

And we still walk.  Contracting HIV at one time was considered a death sentence.  But through research, new treatments are developed that not only save thousands of lives, but ensure their greatly improved quality.  With nutritional supplementation, lifestyle changes, consistent monitoring and proper healthcare, HIV/AIDS is now considered a ?chronic disease? which represents incredible strides in disease management. Unfortunately, the infection rate is still rising.  Each day, someone becomes infected every 15 seconds.    In the next 10 years, 45 million adults and children will die of AIDS.  In the next 20, 75 million will die.  In Clark County, an estimated 8000 cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported.  We walk because our job is far from over.  Until humanity recognizes worldwide that we have to educate both children and adults about high risk behavior, how to protect ourselves, and how to take personal responsibility for our well being, we must continue to raise awareness.

Yes, we still walk.  We do so because our lives and the lives of people we love have been forever touched by HIV/AIDS.  We still walk because HIV/AIDS is non-discriminatory.  It is blind to age, race, religion, gender, heritage, level of intelligence, financial status, or your living condition. It is an equal opportunity infection that knows no boundaries.

We must walk to protect our youth, the world?s most precious commodity.  At least half of all new HIV infections in the United States are among people under 25, according to the CDC.  And the majority of those infections are transmitted through sexual behavior.  Education and outreach are imperative to effect a dramatic reduction in this statistic.  Every effort has to be made to safeguard our children and young adults through commitment, determination, and compassion.  We walk in defense of  cherished generations.

We proudly walk because it?s our opportunity to stand up and be counted.  Humanity is threatened by the HIV pandemic.  All of us, at some point in time, will likely have our lives forever changed by this disease.  Las Vegas and Southern Nevada is at greater risk of the spread of HIV simply based upon the tremendous growth in population.  As the numbers of new residents rises, so does the per capita rate of HIV infection potential. Nevada has more HIV/AIDS cases per capita than any other western state, including California.

We walk with dignity in memory of those whom we have lost over the years, those remarkable individuals who have forever impacted our lives, minds, and hearts.

Yes, we walk with purpose, determination and compassion.  We walk in a show of solidarity, and of support for our families, friends, colleagues and individuals we have never met, who need our understanding and kindness, as much as our vital services.  Through the financial support of the AIDS Walk, we are able to provide life enhancing and health supportive programs for our community.

We will walk until that point in time, when AFAN is no longer effective; our services no longer needed and our purpose no longer essential to the solution.

Please make a donation- Penn and Teller will match (doouble) all monies raised!

          About Our Organization

          Mission Statement:

Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) provides support and advocacy for adults and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in southern Nevada. AFAN works to reduce HIV infection through prevention education to eliminate fear, prejudice and the stigma associated with the disease.

          Client Services:
AFAN’s Client Services department provides support to clients with a need for assistance in managing and living with HIV/AIDS. This includes: case management; emergency financial assistance; public benefits assistance; referrals for substance abuse, legal services, counseling, support groups, housing, physicians and other needs.

          Case Management:
Case Management consists of Care Coordinators who are the first AFAN representatives to meet new clients. Care Coordinators assess the eligibility of new clients for services provided by AFAN, as well as other AIDS service organizations and community based support systems. They provide tangible information about resources and opportunities available to HIV+ individuals and families, including legal assistance, transportation aid, housing support and emergency financial assistance. The primary function of Case Management is to lend guidance and support to our clients in navigating the social services system. They are at the heart of AFAN’s Client Services structure.

          Housing Program:
The Housing Program is directed through Housing Coordinators, who assess both immediate and long term housing needs of AFAN clientele. Included in the client’s housing assessment are related areas of concern, such as mental health level, potential substance abuses, family members (immediate and extended), overall health, level of disability, financial status. Emergency utility payment assistance is also available. Additionally, social workers, primary care givers, nurses, and mental health therapists, among others, will collaborate on assessment teams, thereby ensuring the most appropriate level of assistance and guidance for each client.

          Transportation Program:
The Transportation Coordinator identifies opportunities to assist AFAN clients with a variety of programs to lend assistance where it is needed. For instance, through the referrals of nurses and social workers, Taxi service is available for those clients who, based upon significant medical reasons, cannot utilize the bus system. Working closely with Citizens’ Area Transit, many clients access monthly passes for reduced bus fares. Many clients qualify for CAT Paratransit services where AFAN provides co-payments allowing use of this form of public transportation, which often reduces the need for taxi services. The Transportation Coordinator also makes referrals to other service organizations offering means of transportation for those needing special assistance.

          Food Program:
AFAN provides regular access to food vouchers to help clients purchase food items. In addition, we offer nutritional supplements and vitamins.

          Nutritional Services:
Dependent upon their needs, vitamins and Boost are prescribed to aid in improving general health and wellbeing. For our diabetic clients, Choice is prescribed. Both Choice and Boost improve calorie intake and provide nutrients critical to improved nutrition.

          Education Program:
AFAN employs a dedicated staff of well trained HIV Prevention Specialists who coordinate participation in health fairs, facilitate prevention education workshops and outreach interventions. The various education programs target all segments of the community, are age appropriate and culturally diverse.

          Outreach & Prevention:
AFAN’s Outreach Team reduces the incidence of HIV disease, both primary and secondary, through a combined effort with the Clark County Health District HIV Prevention Program and selected community based organizations including Westcare, Rape Crisis Center and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. The team focuses outreach services, activities, and interventions to high-risk priority populations who would not ordinarily access services.

          Project UpFront:
Project UpFront is an interactive group of HIV+ speakers who disperse prevention messages throughout the community. Some Project UpFront activities include: Lunch & Learn, The Living Quilt, Art Expression, Faces of Courage, Art From the Heart, Massage Therapy and body works.

          Why We Still Walk

AIDS Walk Las Vegas 2008 is April 20th.  This year will be the 18th Annual AIDS Walk.  Eighteen years of recognizing a disease that has grown to be a worldwide pandemic.

          Dear Fellow Nevadans:

You have been invited to join Aid for AIDS Nevada (AFAN) for a day of fun, food, entertainment and a little exercise on Sunday, April 20th, for the 18th Annual AIDS Walk Las Vegas.  While I am proud to congratulate AFAN on the Walks 18th anniversary, I can't help but think about the 501,669 Americans that have died of AIDS, as well as the 6,446 locals that are living with HIV/AIDS right now. It's heartbreaking to me that we still don't have a cure for this devastating disease. Yes, new drugs are being developed, but they don't work for everyone. We need to find a cure.

Please bring your family and friends and join AFAN to walk for those 70 million men, women and children who may die of AIDS in the next 20 years; to walk in support of the fight against AIDS. But most of all, to WALK FOR A CURE!

          • 2008 AIDS Walk Las Vegas April 20, 2008

Aid for AIDS of Nevada has led the AIDS Walk for over seventeen years. Individual Walkers and Walk Team numbers have grown significantly, sponsorships by local businesses and organizations continue to increase, and public awareness rises with every walk.

Last year, more than 6,000 people walked rising over $550,000. Over 250 corporate and community teams raised 70% of the total funds collected. Teams represent some of the leading corporations and organizations in Southern Nevada including MGM Mirage, Macy’s, Focus Property Group, M.A.C Cosmetics, UNLV, Wells Fargo and many more.

Today there is newfound hope in the fight against AIDS – but still no cure. Some people with HIV/AIDS are living longer thanks to new therapies. Tragically, the new treatments do not work for everyone, and HIV continues to spread at an alarming rate.

We will walk until that point in time, when AFAN is no longer effective; our services no longer needed and our purpose no longer essential to the solution.

            AFAN´s Mission ::

Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) provides support and advocacy for adults and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in southern Nevada.  AFAN works to reduce HIV infection through prevention education to eliminate fear, prejudice and the stigma associated with the disease.

            History ::

Founded in 1984, Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) is the oldest and largest AIDS service organization in the state of Nevada. Nearly two thousand men, women and children infected with HIV are registered as clients with our agency. AFAN provides direct client service programs, food programs, prevention and education programs, and community outreach. It is the mission of our client service programs to enhance the physical health and psychosocial wellness of the individuals we serve, while promoting their dignity and improving the quality of their lives.

          Why We Still Walk

AIDS Walk Las Vegas 2008 is April 20th.  This year will be the 18th Annual AIDS Walk.  Eighteen years of recognizing a disease that has grown to be a worldwide pandemic.

          Dear Fellow Nevadans:

You have been invited to join Aid for AIDS Nevada (AFAN) for a day of fun, food, entertainment and a little exercise on Sunday, April 20th, for the 18th Annual AIDS Walk Las Vegas.  While I am proud to congratulate AFAN on the Walk?s 18th anniversary, I can?t help but think about the 501,669 Americans that have died of AIDS, as well as the 6,446 locals that are living with HIV/AIDS right now. It?s heartbreaking to me that we still don?t have a cure for this devastating disease. Yes, new drugs are being developed, but they don?t work for everyone. We need to find a cure.

Please bring your family and friends and join AFAN to walk for those 70 million men, women and children who may die of AIDS in the next 20 years; to walk in support of the fight against AIDS. But most of all, to WALK FOR A CURE!

Nike, It's Time to Drop-Kick Michael Vick

Nike continues sponsoring Michael Vick, even though he faces federal felony dogfighting charges. Witnesses say he and associates cruelly killed dogs who didn't show enough "gameness." Nike stopped plans to roll out a new line of Vick shoes, but that's just a feeble punt, since they continue selling other Vick shoes. He is a completely unsuitable role model, and a terrible reflection on Nike as a responsible company.

          TAKE ACTION
Send an email to Nike President, CEO and Director Mark Parker, asking Nike to sever all ties with Michael Vick immediately.

          Dear Mr. Parker,

Please immediately stop sponsoring Michael Vick. I'm sure you don't want to be associated with someone indicted by a federal grand jury for crimes related to dogfighting. Reports of extreme cruelty to dogs who didn't "perform" to the fighters' satisfaction only add to the disgrace Vick brings to Nike. And selling shirts to children depicting this cruel man as a "hero" is absurd.

Dear Friend, I thought you might be interested in this HSUS campaign to persuade Nike to drop football player and alleged dogfighter Michael Vick. Now that a grand jury has indicted Michael Vick on federal animal fighting charges--causing a tsunami of bad publicity for anyone associated with him--Nike must act. Please ask Nike to cut their ties to Michael Vick immediately. It will only take a minute. Here is the link:

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick Indicted for Dogfighting

This dog was seized from Michael Vick's property, along with 51 others.

A federal grand jury indicted Atlanta Falcons celebrity quarterback Michael Vick and three others on felony dogfighting charges July 17. The indictment follows a three-month investigation of an alleged dogfighting operation uncovered at Vick's property in Surry County, Va.

Vick and the three co-defendants are charged with violating federal laws against competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines. The Humane Society of the United States assisted in the investigation and care of the dogs seized from the property.

          Demand Action!

Ask NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Michael Vick immediately.

"Dogfighting is a serious federal and state crime, and enforcement authorities have treated this investigation with the seriousness it deserves," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "We will continue to work with law enforcement with the intention of bringing to justice any individual who contributed to this cruel and violent treatment of animals."

"Now that Michael Vick has been indicted, the NFL should not hesitate to suspend him," added Pacelle.

"In or about March of 2003, Peace [one of Vick’s co-defendants], after consulting with Vick about the losing female pit bull's condition, executed the losing dog by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal."
          - Read more from the indictment [PDF]

On April 25, Authorities seized 52 pit bulls from Vick's Surry County property and also found equipment used in dogfighting operations including a "rape stand" used for forced breeding, treadmills, drugs to enhance fighting performance, and a blood-stained fighting pit.

Dogfighting is a cruel blood-sport in which two dogs are pitted against each other in a fight to the death, or until one dog cannot continue. They are trained to be vicious—sometimes confined in trunks or closets, fed gunpowder, or beaten—all for the amusement of spectators and high-priced wagering. Fights can last for hours, as the dogs are trained to continue even after brutal wounds are inflicted.

According to court documents regarding Vick's case, even if the losing dogs survived, they met a cruel fate, "sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution or some other method."

Dogfighting is a dead end for any person participating in it, and there's nothing hip or cool about it. More»

These documents, filed in the U.S. District Court in Richmond, thoroughly describe the nature of dogfighting on Vick's property and suggest that one or more informants guided investigators on two recent raids. Authorities say the dogs were bathed immediately before fights to make sure their coats were not tainted with a poison that could unfairly thwart the opponent.

          What You Can Do

Call the NFL's Commissioner Roger Goodell at (212) 450-2000 (you may have to leave a message in voicemail), and ask him to suspend Michael Vick immediately. Then send him a follow-up email.

Tell the NFL to Suspend Michael Vick!

Late yesterday, a federal grand jury indicted NFL star quarterback Michael Vick and three cohorts on felony dogfighting charges. It’s the latest disturbing news in a case that The Humane Society of the United States has assisted with since the alleged cruelties came to light in Virginia last April.

I hope you will take action today to urge the NFL to  suspend Michael Vick indefinitely.

The abuses described in the 19-page indictment are almost beyond belief:

In or about March of 2003, PEACE [one of Vick’s co-defendants], after consulting with VICK about the losing female pit bull's condition, executed the losing dog by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal.

In or about April 2007, PEACE, PHILLIPS, and VICK executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well in "testing" sessions...by various methods, including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."

The NFL expressed “disappointment” and said yesterday that “we believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts.”

Well, that’s just not good enough. These acts were not petty or harmless; they were nothing short of gruesome and barbaric. And there is precedent for a suspension: Other NFL players, such as Pacman Jones and Chris Henry, have been suspended while they awaited trial and before they were convicted. Please contact the NFL today and urge the league to suspend Michael Vick.

For details about the case and The HSUS’s role in assisting federal prosecutors with the investigation and the care of 52 pit bulls taken from Vick’s property, click here. And if you are able, please make a special donation today to help us care for those animals while the case is being pursued by federal authorities.

Thank you for all you do for animals.

          Sincerely,

          Wayne Pacelle

From "Z.B.A. Zen of Business Administration: How Zen Practice Can Transform Your Work and Your Life" by Marc Lesser

          Z.B.A. Zen of Business Administration

In the fall of 1983 I left Tassajara, Zen Mountain Center, with my wife and infant son, and went to New York City to attend my last semester of Rutgers University in New Jersey to complete my undergraduate degree and to enter New York University’s Graduate School of Business. At Tassajara I had been a Zen monk and a respected administrative leader. In New York City I was a thirty-one-year-old unemployed new father, without a college degree and with no experience that anyone could relate to. My résumé showed that I had been director of Tassajara and had spent the last ten years living at the San Francisco Zen Center and the last four years as a Zen monk. Shortly after arriving in New York I went into Manhattan to an employment agency to find temporary work. I put on my best (and probably my only) suit and tie and arrived on the fifty-second floor of a skyscraper on Madison Avenue in the office of an agency that someone suggested I visit. I gave my résumé to the receptionist and sat in the waiting area. After a few minutes I looked up and saw several people gathered around a desk looking at my résumé, smiling, laughing, and looking at me. I overheard someone say in amazement, “There’s a Zen monk in our office looking for a job!” As you might imagine, I had a hard time finding work in New York City.

Despite my difficulties finding a job, a basic truth that I have come to learn, and a primary assumption of this book, is that we are all Zen students, and we are all businesspeople. We are all Zen students in that we all must contend with birth, old age, sickness, and death. We have no idea where we come from or where we will go. At the deepest level we all have the same aspirations — to love and be loved, to discover and express our unique gifts, and to find peace and equanimity in the midst of whatever life may bring us. Zen is a practice and set of values to help us be aware, to awaken, to uncover our innate wisdom and authenticity. Though Zen is often perceived as enigmatic and difficult to understand, it is at its heart a system of simple practices that can be done anywhere — even in the middle of our busy work lives.

We all have to deal with difficulty and crisis — taking care of dying parents, troubled friends, or children; meeting the changes that come suddenly or gradually; confronting pain and difficulty for ourselves and for those we love. Meditation practice and Zen practice are much like creating a controlled crisis — we have nowhere to go and nothing to do; we’re depending on our own bodies and minds, completely alone, and completely connected. Zen practice can help us reveal ourselves, our pain and suffering, our bare feelings, the immensity of our lives. By sitting still, just by being present, we learn that we can fully accept our imperfect selves, just as we are. This process can be cleansing and transforming; it can influence every part of our lives. Zen practice is ultimately about finding real freedom and helping others.

And we are all businesspeople. There is no avoiding having to deal with money, with the basic needs we all have for food and shelter and clothing. All professions, even those not primarily focused on business, are embedded in the world of business. Doctors and therapists call their customers patients. Teachers and social workers cannot escape budgets and management structures. Nonprofit organizations and religious institutions need to attract employees, pay salaries, and perform within financial frameworks.

At the heart of all businesses, whether they are overtly within the business community or not, is a focus on meeting the needs of people. Businesses make things or provide services that people need. We sometimes forget that the starting point of business is much more than making money or creating wealth. During the recent bursting of the dot-com bubble we learned firsthand what happens when businesses are started without a thoughtful plan for meeting the needs of people: they often disappear rather quickly.

In 1973 I took a one-year leave of absence from Rutgers, where I had been majoring in psychology. A year later, when I first entered the San Francisco Zen Center building, I heard a clear, quiet voice saying that this place, this practice, was worth ten years of my life. I was drawn to the discipline of a daily meditation practice and the blending of a deep, mystical philosophy with a grounded, practical approach. I was impressed by the maturity, sincerity, and wisdom of the teachers and students. I was intrigued by the possibility of living within a community of like-minded people and by the concept of work as an expression of spiritual practice.

During my tenth year at the San Francisco Zen Center I was asked to be director of Tassajara, Zen Mountain Center, a monastery in a mountainous wilderness area in central California. I loved my work as director and was surprised when I first noticed that though I was living the life of a Zen monk, my daily work activities were primarily business related — managing people, overseeing budgets, solving problems, and devising strategic plans. I came to realize not only that there was no conflict between spiritual practice and business practice but also that these two activities were vital complements to each other. I was a more effective manager because of my Zen practice; and my Zen practice was more focused and vibrant through the disciplines and challenges of my management activities.

While at Tassajara I began thinking about what would come next for me, feeling it was time to move outside the sphere of the Zen Center community. Again I began to hear a clear and quiet voice saying that it was time to enter the business world. I thought for sure that this voice must be mistaken or that it was whispering to the wrong person. And yet, in some peculiar way, it made perfect sense.

I aspired to combine my Zen training and my intention to make a difference in the world with the belief that it might be possible to integrate spiritual practice and business practice within the business community. I reasoned that since this was what I was doing at the Zen Center, there must be some way to take this activity to the business world. I also observed that business now played a prominent and influential role in our world. After many years of training in spiritual practice, I felt that I needed some business training, so I decided to get an MBA. This was the opening paragraph of my business school application, written while I was director of Tassajara, after having been a resident of the San Francisco Zen Center for ten years:

I have always been a “manager.” At age six I was organizing the children on my block to protect themselves from the bully on the next block. In Little League baseball I led the Suburban Delicatessen team to win the “world series.” In high school I was the captain of the varsity wrestling team, and in college was vice president of Theta Chi fraternity. In 1978 I spent two months with my father as he was dying of cancer — managing his care by directing doctors, nurses, and family members and making intimate contact with him by stepping outside established medical and family systems. At Zen Center, Green Gulch Farm, I implemented the revival of the nineteenth-century practice of draft horse farming and demonstrated its potential for being cost effective. At Tassajara, Zen Mountain Center, I was the assistant cook and then the head cook, the head of the meditation hall, and the director of Tassajara. Managing, therefore, has been a vehicle for self-development for most of my life.

Journeying to New York City, to business school, to life outside the Zen Center community, as a husband and new father, was a painful, challenging, and tremendously rich time. In many ways I felt like a visitor from another planet. I had left my community, which had become my family, my place, and in many ways my identity. Yes, this is ironic, since Zen practice is aimed at helping us not become too attached to things, particularly one’s identity. It was a rude awakening to see that I had become quite comfortable with being a Zen student. Looking back, this was one of the most important transitions in my life.

I spent two years as a full-time student at New York University’s Graduate School of Business located just off Wall Street in Lower Manhattan. My second job out of business school was as a manager for Conservatree Paper Company in San Francisco, where I was responsible for purchasing and selling large quantities of recycled paper. I learned the basic skills involved in commerce, or what I’ve come to think of as trade skills. One of my customers was a small mail-order business that offered greeting cards and wrapping paper made from recycled paper. I watched this company expand from being a two-person operation to becoming a major catalog company. They were the only company in the United States making paper goods from recycled paper. Yet I didn’t find their designs particularly attractive. I suggested to the owner of Conservatree that we diversify into the catalog business, but this idea was met with little interest. So I began writing a business plan. I had become knowledgeable in the field of recycled paper, I had many friends from Zen Center who were artists, and I saw a market that was in its infancy and growing quickly. Thus the idea for Brush Dance was born.

Brush Dance began in my garage in 1989. We started as a mail-order catalog producing a few wrapping papers and greeting cards made from recycled paper. Today we are a multimillion dollar company that sells cards, journals, calendars, and gift items to stores throughout the United States and the world. The company’s byline is Mindful Stationery Products, The Art of Meaningful Expression. Brush Dance products can be found at more than five thousand retail outlets. Our customers include Borders, Barnes & Noble, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Target, as well as small stores selling cards, gifts, and books. Our licenses include Renee Locks, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, and the Poetry of Rumi.

During my years of growing a business I have continued my daily meditation practice as well as maintained a strong connection with the San Francisco Zen Center. Last fall I traveled to Japan to attend the thirty-third memorial service of Suzuki Roshi, the founding teacher of the San Francisco Zen Center and author of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. I stayed for several days before the ceremony with Suzuki Roshi’s son, Hoitsu (referred to as Hojo-san), who has become one of the leading Zen teachers in Japan today. Being with Hojo-san, his wife, and family in this five-hundred-year-old temple was life changing. Hojo-san loved to laugh and play and was extremely attentive. We sat together on the floor each evening for dinner. Whenever I took a sip of sake, Hojo-san was quick to refill my cup.

As I was leaving the temple, Hojo-san gave me a drawing that he had made of a frog and a Zen monk sitting in meditation, with the frog looking at the monk and the monk looking at the frog. He had written some beautiful Japanese characters above the figures. When I asked Hojo-san what the characters meant, he said, “Everywhere you go is your temple.” These simple and profound words have stayed with me and became the foundation for this book and for my life.

I have been managing and growing Brush Dance for fifteen years. I feel fortunate to be running a company with a mission to disseminate spiritual messages to the world. The financial, operational, and personnel challenges continue to provide never-ending practical and spiritual challenges. At the same time Zen practice has become more and more a central focus in my life: I’ve been lecturing and teaching at the San Francisco Zen Center, I co-lead retreats for businesspeople at Zen Center’s Green Gulch Farm, and I was recently ordained as a Zen priest.

We are all Zen students, and we are all businesspeople. Our lives are messy, impossible, miraculous, mysterious, and beyond our usual explanations. There are no easy answers. It can be difficult to learn to appreciate the questions. What does it mean to be fully ourselves at work? How can we find true fulfillment and happiness? How can we find true fulfillment and happiness at our jobs? What is the impossible request our life makes of us? What outer or inner transformations are required before we can see our work life as a place to practice, as a sacred space? What does “Everywhere you go is your temple” really mean?

The temple referred to by Hojo-san may be very different from any notion we have about what a temple is supposed to look like. This temple might sometimes appear to be a bedroom, a mountain trail, a factory assembly line, or an office filled with desks and computers. It is a very large, inconceivably wide temple. I feel fortunate to be asking these questions and walking a path with so many sincere people. We are all Zen students, and we are all business- people, and we are all so much more.

Our lives are rich with potential sources of happiness, but sometimes we become victims of negative thinking because we believe that focusing on all that has gone wrong will provide us with the motivation we need to face the challenges of survival. When we choose to focus on what makes us happy, however, a shift occurs in the fabric of our existence. Finding something to be happy about every single day can help this shift take place. The vantage points from which we view the world are brought into balance, and we can see that being alive truly is a gift to be savored. There is always something we can be happy about—it is simply up to us to identify it.

On one day, we may find happiness in a momentous, life-changing event such as a marriage or the birth of a child. On another day, the happiness we experience may be a product of our appreciation of a particularly well-brewed cup of a tea or the way the sun shines on a leaf. If we discover that we literally cannot call to mind a single joyful element of existence, we should examine the cause of the blockage standing between us and experiencing happiness. Keeping a happiness journal is a wonderful way to catalog the happiness unfolding all around us so that joy has myriad opportunities to manifest itself in our lives. Writing about the emotions we experience while contemplating joy may give us insight into the factors compelling us to resist it.

Happiness may not always come easily into your life. You have likely been conditioned to believe that the proper response to unmet expectations is one of sadness, anger, guilt, or fear. To make joy a fixture in your existence, you must first accept that it is within your power to choose happiness over unhappiness every single day. Then, each time you discover some new source of happiness, the notion that the world is a happy place will find its way more deeply into your heart. On this day, find one thing to be happy about and let it fill your heart.

          Peace, Love and Healing
From "Peace, Love and Healing: Bodymind Communication & the Path to Self-Healing: An Exploration" by Bernie S. Siegel

Since the original publication of Peace, Love & Healing, scientists have been doing a tremendous amount of research linking consciousness, psychosocial factors, attitudinal healing and immune function. Yet these ideas are not new. When appearing recently as a medical expert in a court case relating illness to stress, I was asked, "When did this new theory originate?" My response was," Hundreds of years ago." Why? Because that was when physicians had little in the way of drug treatments for their patients--instead they relied on knowledge of their patients and the circumstances of their lives in order to heal them.

Woody Allen tells us that human beings are divided into mind and body: The mind embraces all the nobler aspirations, like poetry and philosophy, but the body has all the fun. I believe, however, that the body and mind are a unit, bound together via nerves and messenger molecules. Love, hope, joy and peace of mind have physiological consequences, just as depression and despair do. That's what the science of mind-body communication is all about.

Today's technology is amazing and I am grateful for it, but life requires more than technology for healing to occur. We see this clearly demonstrated by the behavior of people today. I agree that living is hard and dying easy, but we have to look at life and find some meaning in it so we understand what we are here for and how to survive. These are issues survivors are willing to confront by seeking the wisdom of the great teachers.

My friend, psychologist Warren Berland, studied a group of long-term survivors and enumerated the personality characteristics of these individuals. He found that they fell into three groups.

Some individuals displayed one characteristic in their personality and others displayed all three. The characteristics he noted were the ability to express anger, the willingness to learn, and make lifestyle changes and spirituality.

Thus, as I have seen, the individual who gets angry and calls me for help when told he or she is incurable, or displays righteous indignation when not treated with respect, is more likely to survive then the individual who becomes depressed, goes home and lies down to die. The person who attends workshops, reads books and changes his or her life because of what he or she learns is also more likely to survive. Survivors pay attention to what they feel is the, right life for them. This is not about being selfish, but about saving your life by living the life you desire and not the one imposed upon you. The third quality is a spiritual one, the resource that brings with it peace and support in the most difficult times. It is very difficult but very healing at times, to leave your troubles to God., I do not use the word religion in this context because the rules and practices of some religions can lead to guilt and problems of healing. God is not the problem. God and adversity are the teachers. Thus survival behavior eliminates the victim role.

In reading the writings of Shantanand Saraswati I came across his comments about the complete person. He listed these qualities: action, wisdom and devotion. Sound familiar? That is what I mean when I say the more I learn the more I realize it is not new. However, since the messages of the past support our findings, they lend validity to them.

Every cell in your body is capable of memory and consciousness. Your dreams, symbols, drawings and feelings tell us this and now so does science., The increasing information from transplant recipients about the lives of the individuals whose donor organs are within them is incredible but true. So please pay attention to the messages from your body and heal whatever may, be hurting you and be aware of the information you are giving your body. Please don't let your ability to think overcome your ability to feel. it is dangerous to your health. As one attorney discovered, in the midst of a tragedy, what he had learned in law school was of no help, "While learning to think I almost forgot how to feel." Before I am done Iwill share with you how to learn to feel well by helping you to become the person you would like to be.

Loving relationships have been proven to affect our health. A study of adopted children in Denmark showed they were more likely to develop cancer if their adopted parents died of it before the age of fifty than if their biological parents did. It is not the carcinogen in the kitchen. Poor relationships with parents or the loss of a parent by a child affects their future health. A study of Harvard students revealed that of those students attending college who described their parents as loving, only 29% had a significant disease diagnosed by midlife. Of those who did not use many affectionate words to describe their parents, 95% had suffered some major illness, all cofactors being considered. Faith has a similar beneficial effect.

We all realize it is the relationships and healthy, healing feelings that make the difference. They are the chemistry of survival. It is not the mere presence of different hormones. Scientists and physicians often have tunnel vision because of their training. Their vision changes when illness strikes home. Then they learn about survival factors, and love is a big one.

Dr. George Solomon, a pioneer in the field of psychneuroimmunology, uses the term immune competent personality to define the qualities of these long-term survivors. He uses. a set of questions to see if a person has these qualities and is likely to be a long-term survivor when confronting, AIDS or any other illness.

His questions are really quite practical and help him more than the multiple page personality profiles that other psychologists use. They relate to the qualities survivors display in their lives. Survivors have a sense of meaning in their daily activities, They feel the value in what they are doing and see it as their way of contributing love to the world. Monday doesn't threaten them. They have also learned that if they can't eliminate some of the difficult things from their life they can change their attitude towards those things. Happiness is a choice. Its source is within you.

Another quality is the ability to express appropriate anger when you are not treated with respect. I always, suggest taking a Siegel Kit with you when hospitalized. It consists of a magic marker, a noisemaker and a water gun.

Admissions from Lied Animal Shelter Leaders

          Feb 15, 2007 06:57 AM PST

There is more information on what went wrong at the Lied Animal Shelter.  It all came out at a heated meeting Wednesday night.

Janie Greenspun-Gale is the head of the group that runs the shelter.  She said that more than 1,000 pets had to die because of bad decisions.

Lied finally called in outside experts when things started getting out of control.  The shelter is now working to implement all the National Humane Society Policies.

Keep it tuned to Channel 13 Action News for the latest on Lied's improvements.
