600 Million lightbulbs add 30,000 POUNDS of Mercury to our air and water EACH YEAR.

Compact Fluorescent Recycling Kits  Compact Bulb Recycling   Compact fluorescent light bulbs and lamps are more energy efficient than standard bulbs.  However, they pose a huge environmental risk if they are disposed of in a landfill to be burned or buried.

Northern West Virginia's Mountaineer and Mt. Storm wind farms are the only places where wind has been developed in the state.  It's a different story in coal rich areas farther to the south.  There, Massey Energy has requested permits to bury miles of mountain valleys and streams with hundreds of millions of tons of mining waste.  Mountaintop removal permanently destroys not only the immediate environment, but it poisons everything downstream of the location.

Please help residents in their battle for Coal River Mountain by sending an email to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calling on them to prevent Massey Energy from getting their permits. The EPA has denied a few valley fill permits already, and they need to add Coal River Mountain to the list.  Wind farms are the logical choice.  Email the EPA

Take action. Save the Tongass from clearcutting.

Despite the support of over 4 million public comments from across the country supporting the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, Bush excluded Alaska's Tongass rainforest from roadless protections.

This spring, clearcutting is scheduled to begin in the Tongass, our nation's largest national forest and the largest remaining old-growth temperate rainforest in the world.

Take action. Save the Tongass from clearcutting.

Corporate Welfare.  Right now, even as they make the biggest profits in American history, oil companies like ExxonMobil are getting $13 billion in tax breaks.

Please tell Congress to end tax breaks for Big Oil and invest in clean energy:
Click here to visit PaidForByBigOil.com and sign the petition.

BIG OIL contributions to election campaigns since 2000:
John McCain accepted $1,196,680
Barack Obama accepted $404,160
These numbers do not include money received by Senate campaigns or PACs.

Some senators and congressmen are working to strip away these tax giveaways and invest in clean energy like wind and solar.  Sadly,
too many of our representatives in Congress are paid by Big Oil to oppose efforts to repeal these tax breaks.

EPA Must Clean Up Cement Kilns Now

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has given the cement industry a free pass to spew mercury pollution into our air and water for far too long. We must tell EPA it is time to do its job and adopt strong protections against mercury pollution for all U.S. cement kilns, to require cement kilns to test their actual mercury emissions, and to make this information readily available to the public.

Tell the EPA to do its job and clean up mercury pollution!

EVEN ONE SERVING PER MONTH OF FARMED SALMON MAY CAUSE CANCER.  Please REFUSE TO BUY FARMED SALMON.

Located in coastal waters, farmed salmon are contaminated with herbicide and pesticide runoff from inland vegetable farms.

If you don't believe this yet,
learn more: even as early as July 30, 2003, a New York Times article reported that farmed salmon cause cancer :

(Thanks Lori W) Some oil companies are worse than others. The Sierra Club has provided descriptions to MAKE YOUR DOLLARS COUNT.

ok ones:
Citgo (Also sells through 7-11 stores): Fairly clean refineries and has no major fines or human rights violations. Citgo also does not deny that global warming could be linked to carbon emissions. To find Citgo stations in your area visit Citgo's store locator.

Sunoco (Also sells though Ultra Service Centers and APlus mini markets): Runs fairly clean refineries and openly acknowledges the link between carbon emissions and global warming. Does not resist cleaning up and paying
envirnomental fines . Call to find Sunoco near you: 1-800-786-6261 (SUNOCO-1) (1-800-786-6261).

Worst ones (our lawyers are bigger than your governments):
Exxon-Mobile
(Also Esso and On The Run convenience stores): many of the dirtiest refineries, regularly racks up huge fines for irresponsible behavior, then it fights long court battles to keep from paying. Exxon is STILL HOLDING OUT since 1989 in REFUSING TO PAY $5 BILLION FOR THE EXXON-VALDEZ SPILL!

British Petroleum (BP, Amoco, ARCO, and am/pm convenience stores): dirty refineries and heavy lobbying in Washington to drill in the ANWR.

Royal Dutch/Shell:
Nine Ogoni activists were killed on Shell's behalf by the Nigeria last year for protesting Shell's effects on native people and the local environment.

Chevron-Texaco
(Thanks Pelagus) In Richmond, CA, where Chevron's refines 350,000 barrels of oil a day, residents suffer high rates of lupus, skin rashes, rheumatic fever, liver problems, kidney problems, tumors, cancer, asthma, and eye problems.

Direct everyone to this web page so that they spend their gas money where it does the least environmental damage: theemailactivist.org/Gas.htm.
