I create these shares not just because I like to express myself, but because I believe in the power of Care2 to connect dedicated people in a network of progressive activism, in the spirit of the web site Activism Across America.
I'm excited about a new project that's just been completed just in time for the congressional elections. It's a card game, called That's My Congress.
A card game doesn't sound like a big deal, but I think that this one could be. That's My Congress isn't like other card games, which merely entertain through friendly competition. It does that, but this card game also enlightens and elevates the players.
It's a game about the United States House of Representatives, in which players hold members of Congress literally in the palms of their hands, using them to pass legislation, and then to battle for re-election.
By playing the game, people are having fun, but they're also becoming familiar with different members of Congress, and contemplating the ways that power works on Capitol Hill. More than with an ordinary card game, players of That's My Congress will become inspired to take real action, advancing the political ideals that they believe in.
Care2 readers aren't passive. They're activists. They're citizens of the online world and in their communities.
That's why I'm writing this article on Care2 - to urge American Care2 users to show up for the Inauguration on January 20, 2009, and to take part in a pro-Constitution political demonstration there.
You follow the news. You know what's happened to the Constitution under George W. Bush. It's been reduced to shreds. With torture, government surveillance of law-abiding American citizens, arbitrary imprisonment without habeas corpus, mixing of church and state, and illegal restraint on freedom of speech, the USA has lost a lot of its freedom over the past 8 years.
Electing Barack Obama is an important step to undoing the damage to the Constitution, but it's not enough. Now that Barack Obama is taking power, we citizens need to show Barack Obama that we're still paying attention. We need to send a clear message that restoring our constitutional rights is a top priority for 2009.
Come to Washington D.C. on January 20th. There, on the Inaugural Parade route on the southwest corner of 9th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, right next to the Department of Justice, starting at high noon, there will be a peaceful, positive political demonstration with a simple message: President Obama, keep the promise you made with your Oath of Office. Uphold the Constitution.
There's a great new idea for the Obama campaign that my friend Peregrin has written about, but it's been almost totally neglected by the news media. You all know the kind of frustration that comes with seeing the superficial rumor-mongering about Obama run as top news in the media, while the positive message of Obama himself, and the good work done by his supporters, stays out of sight on the TV news.
You can help counter that problem by starting up an ObamaWorks chapter near you. ObamaWorks organizes groups of people to engage in acts of community service while wearing Barack Obama buttons. it's a simple, gentle way of campaigning that really ought to get more attention from local news. It communicates the message that Barack Obama supporters are working in a positive way to help make America better.
There's no scandal. Nothing negative. ObamaWorks is a way for you to take the high road in the 2008 election - just like Barack Obama is doing himself.
This morning, Irregular Times uncovered the names of the three members of Congress who voted against allowing the full House from considering Oceans 21 (Oceans Conservation, Education, and National Strategy for the 21st Century Act. - H.R. 21). They are:
Bill Sali of Idaho
Rob Wittman of Virginia
Henry Brown of South Carolina
It's an issue that a lot of people still aren't aware of, but Earth's oceans are experiencing an extreme ecological crisis, fueled by overfishing, pollution, and climate change, that is devastating populations of fish and other marine animals. If strong action is not taken, marine ecosystems might never recover, and that's not just bad for fish - it's bad for the people who eat fish too. See Oceana for more details.
Thankfully, there's Oceans 21 - a law that would create and fund a comprehensive national strategy for dealing with the ecological crisis in Earth's oceans.
Only a fool would vote against Oceans 21, but Bill Sali, Rob Wittman and Henry Brown seem to be just that kind of fool. What makes it even more tragic is that Rob Wittman and Henry Brown represent congressional districts that border the ocean! Their constituents, even more than the rest of us, depend upon the ecological integrity of the sea.
Thanks to more responsible members of the House Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans, the Oceans 21 legislation survived to move on toward a full vote on the House floor. Unfortunately, Sali, Wittman and Brown will have a chance to vote against Oceans 21 on the House floor, in a final attempt to kill the important law.
ACT!
Please, call the offices of Representatives Bill Sali [(202) 225-6611], Rob Wittman [(202) 225-4261] and Henry Brown [(202) 225-3176] and tell them you want them to reverse their positions on Oceans 21, and vote YES when it is considered in the full House of Representatives.
Right wingers have been running around for a year now with the same old pathetic smears against Barack Obama. We progressives have had our information about Barack Obama too, and we've been doing our best to share that information - at Irregular Times, we've given Barack Obama his own blog category for instance. Yet, it seems that the dirty attacks, no matter how little substance they have, are the ones that get the attention.
It's time for Barack Obama supporters to pay attention. If right wing hacks like the people at Human Events can spread their report, entitled Barack Obama Exposed! around the Internet, then so can we. We can make our own report with the same title - or do a kind of distributed network project, in which we all write under the theme of "Barack Obama Exposed". There's a difference in our project, though: We're working to expose the truth about Barack Obama.
Let me give an example with this poll. I'll write on the subject of Barack Obama Exposed, but in a positive, truthful light, thus bringing undecided voters who might otherwise be reading right wing deceptive reports to some useful facts instead.
I wrote this afternoon on Irregular Times about the irony that the very same people who appear to be attacking Barack Obama with the bogus rumor that he is a secret undercover agent for Al Queda - Celeste and Loren Davis, also believe that the 5 pointed star is a secret symbol used by servants of Satan to identify themselves. They call it the Star of Sirius, or the Star of Beelzebub.
John McCain, as the attached picture shows, uses the 5 pointed star as the central visual symbol of his presidential campaign. Now, if the right wing activists who have been forwarding around Loren Davis's slurs against Barack Obama were consistent, they would also be sending around warnings that John McCain is a servant of the Devil.
After all, they have already indicated that they regard Loren Davis Ministries as a credible source. So, if Loren Davis says that the 5 pointed star is a satanic symbol, and John McCain uses the 5 pointed star as his campaign logo, why aren't they going after John McCain?
It seems to me that the answer is that these people don't actually believe what Loren Davis says. They don't even know who Loren Davis really is. They just hate Barack Obama so much that they will forward on any negative message they see about him, without researching the rumors, or even thinking critically about what the rumors claim.
That's a sad indication of the desperation with which John McCain's supporters are working, and a frightening indication of where this election will probably go. I trust that most Americans will understand how ridiculous the claims of Loren Davis are - but the mainstream news operations are not even reporting on the McCain camp's use of these rumors.
It is up to us, the netroots, to set the record straight.
