I just saw a documentary on CBC Television entitled "On Our Watch"
It documented the slow, terrible, genocide in Darfur and the complete inability of the UN to adequately respond to it. I saw the helplessness of humanitarians and aid workers as they struggled to get aid to the displaced & traumatized people of Darfur and get their superiors in the UN and other nations to take steps to stop it.
I saw the women, victimized by multiple rapes, bombings, loss of everything they had in the world including husbands and children, tell their stories. I also saw the smugness of China and the Sudanese representatives as they either denied what was going on or claim it was over-blown. It was and still is a tragedy and it shows what can happen when Countries sworn to uphold the banner of Human Rights refuse to co-operate and play petty politics with each other. It is too much for my heart to bear.
The U.N. is good at arranging for humanitarian aid, medicine, blankets, fresh drinking water to get to people in crisis. Unfortunately, its political side is not nearly that co-operative, it procrastinates, argues and ignores the brutal reality of nation states turning ethnic minorities. Perhaps, that is why it can't seem to get itself to take action when Human Rights are being trampled. I know a lot of people have little use for the UN. However, almost all U.N. failures can be laid to the refusal of its members to support concrete action when a country's sovereignty might be threatened.
However, there is a grass roots movement
which is putting pressure on China and other countries to stop sending arms and to divest any holdings in the Sudan. This grass roots movement is the first in history to actively oppose genocide , I hope it grows and proves more effective than the rhetoric of our politicians.
Thousands of civilians remain at risk from Israeli cluster munitions used one year ago, but in the space of a year civil society and states have made major progress towards a new international treaty banning the weapons.
On August 14, 2006, the day of the ceasefire, cluster munitions killed or injured 13 civilians returning to their homes. A year later, the Landmine Resources Center has recorded 219 civilian casualties from cluster munitions and the contamination in southern Lebanon is still severe and dangerous.
The UN estimates that Israel used 4 million submunitions, the majority in the last 72 hours before the ceasefire. Of the 219 civilians killed or injured by unexploded submunitions in Lebanon since August 14 2006 about 35% have been children. In the same period an additional 32 people have been killed or injured during clearance work. Clearance operations involve over 1,300 personnel and have cleared more than 125,000 submunitions. 37km2 of land is contaminated, hampering agriculture, the basis of southern Lebanon’s economy. A year after the conflict ended, Israel still has not released strike data that the UN requested to help clearance. Cluster Munition Coalition member Habbouba Aoun of the Landmines Resource Center in Beirut has worked since the ceasefire to support survivors and prevent casualties from cluster munitions by educating the local population.
“It is already one year since the war. I have been in the field since July 2006. I saw bodies, blood everywhere, women crying, children dying, villages completely damaged, and misery and disasters everywhere. All of us who have been helping others are traumatized by the feeling that we still have to live the war after the cease fire because of the cluster bomb problem. We are all suffering from this problem. We are all calling people of the world to put an end to the misery caused by cluster bombs,” Aoun said from Beirut.
75 states are now participating in the Oslo Process, launched in February 2007 when 46 governments supported a declaration to establish an international treaty by 2008 to &lsquorohibit cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians’. Belgium, Norway, Austria, Hungary and the Netherlands have renounced or suspended use of the weapon. The next major international conference will take place in Vienna, 5-7 December.
“The past year of suffering in Lebanon shows once more why cluster bombs must never be used. As we move closer than ever to an international treaty banning this weapon we call on all responsible states to join this effort,” said Thomas Nash, Coordinator of the Cluster Munition Coalition.
Affected communities in southern Lebanon also hold out hope for the new treaty and what it will mean for them.
"I survived a cluster bomb explosion in September 2006. For a while I wished I didn't survive. Now, one year after the war, I say I am so lucky I am still alive. Despite the destruction caused by the war, we were able to rebuild the bridges and start reconstruction. But who is rebuilding the lives of those people who lost limbs or got injured by a cluster bomb? What counts is that we witnessed the war and we are still alive to tell the world that a ban of cluster bombs is needed. Look at us, you would know why," said Mohamed Kassen Abbedd from Snayeh.
" We'd just about finished our patrol, when ordered to another sector. A firefight was starting up and some of the boys were in trouble. We took a couple of gooks prisoner a few hours back but a couple of days before we lost some boys in an ambush. It didn't seem enough to just execute them. The gooks had a wild pig when we took em, so we shot em, cut their heads off, set up three stakes by the trail and jammed their heads on either side of the pigs."
Chuck's voice rang soft and clear in the dark silences of the Street Ministry Staff pad. A few of us coughed uncomfortably, unwilling to praise or condemn or even comment on his disclosure. Bound together by our ignorance of the war and our antipathy to it, we had sheltered draft dodgers, marched in anti-war protests, been tear-gassed and accused of everything from cowardice to treason. None of us knew much more about Vietnam except what the broadcasters and the government told us. But images of burnt out villages, napalmed children and body counts haunted us, and not one of us could quite grasp the reasons for the war nor understand what our country hoped to achieve.
Chuck was one of the rare ones. Unlike the Street Ministry Staff, and its contingent of peacenics, he had actually volunteered to go. A country boy from the rich farmlands of southern Illinois, Chuck was a believer in all things American as well as an excellent marksman. He came into the Ministry's Hostel about six months before, just out of the hospital, recuperating from a bullet wound in the chest. Some young idiot had been playing around with a 22 rifle and aimed it at Chuck. Chuck said, "You don't dare pull the trigger". the kid did. The staff decided to adopt him and his sweet guitar playing, strong voice and quiet authority soon won over the Ministry's sponsors. Chuck became a co-director of the hostel and a part-time drug counsellor for its transient clientele.
However, the very qualities which made him acceptable to our counter-culture, anti-war advocates and street people, would not inspire much confidence in police, politicians, or Middle America. His tangled long hair, scraggly beard, patched blue jeans, tie dyed T-shirt and sandals made him a target for camera crews filming anti-war protests. Perhaps the only identification he carried, a copy of his discharge papers from the military prison at Leavenworth would account for police suspicion, or why The FBI investigated our outreach program. Maybe they didn't like his appearance or resented his silent contempt.
However, Chuck posed no danger to the minions of political authority. Unlike the conspiracy buffs who delighted in dreaming up ways to overthrow or wreak havoc on the establishment, swamped bomb-making recipes, and bragged about their lethal effectiveness, Chuck was a pacifist.
Pacifism was more honoured in name than deed, in the anti-war, anti-establishment street culture of San Francisco during the 1970s. We admired the freedom riders, Martin Luther King, the advocates of non-violence, equal rights, and marijuana. Ghandi was our patron saint, and LSD our path to Enlightenment. Nevertheless, none of us had faced either end of an M16, breathed the acrid fumes of a flame-thrower, napalm or gun powder or knew what it was REALLY LIKE in Vietnam before Chuck.
His story was a simple one. He volunteered, was specially trained as a sniper and had one of the highest kill counts of his unit. Then, about 8 months into his tour of duty, he had a black out. When he came out of it, he found himself in a tree with about 20 dead water buffalo scattered around it. He looked at his rifle, realised he had shot all of them, and hadn't the slightest idea why. "I felt like I had been crazy for a long, long time," He said, "So I went to the CO, turned in my rifle and told him I wasn't going to shot it again."
The CO decided a little R&R was in order, and sent him to Japan on leave. But when Chuck's leave was done, he refused to touch his gun again. They sent him to a retraining camp, he decided he didn't like it, so he left. He was caught, tried, convicted and sent to the Military Penitentiary at Leavenworth. "I knew all I had to do to get out was go back and be a good little killer," He said, "But I wasn't about to go crazy again.".
In the eclectic circle of The Street Ministry, its clients, sponsors and groupies, we were inclined to accept everyone at face value, albeit with a strong dash of scepticism. All of us had our own story, but no one knew how manufactured or embellished that story was. Our mission grew out of a seminary student's third year out reach project. His initial plan was to teach the gospel to street people; he ended up with six homeless souls on his apartment floor. Attracting the attention of his superiors (not to mention that of his landlord!) Michael convinced the Ecumenical Association of Southern Marin Co. to open a hostel on church property. From its humble beginnings, the Street Ministry grew to include: a mini-employment centre at one church, a free medical clinic at another, a newsletter, a meal program, and of course the hostel. The staff was made up of volunteers, mostly drawn from the transient population and a peculiar bunch of people we were..
Outside of Chuck, there was Frank a reform Jew from New York. He had a black belt in Karate and often put on free exhibitions at the hostel when a particularly rough & roudy group showed up. There was Gabriel, fervent believer in the spiritual efficacy of brown rice and a macrobiotic diet, who abandoned university two months prior to graduation and refused to wear glasses because they weakened the eyes. We had Fred, an ardent vegetarian, who wore a,"Jesus is my brother" patch on his coat sleeve and Jim, an oversized Canadian who would eat just about anything and whose repertoire of adjectives and adverbs was limited to, "Nice" or Not Nice".
These were just some of the more conventional characters who wandered through the sanctuary of the Street Ministry, rendered service and moved on once again. We were a restless lot, infused with the enthusiasm and cynicism of the flower-power generation: naive advocates of self-realisation, free love, and political anarchy. We did not realise there was a price to pay for the stand we take or that hot house flowers do not thrive on city streets.
This came home one evening, when Chuck returned from a local saloon covered with blood. One eye was swollen shut, his ribs were bruised and his breath came in short shuttering gasps. After he was discharged from the emergency ward of the local hospital at 3:00 A.M, we heard his story.
Chuck rarely spoke about Viet Nam, his time in prison, exactly why he became a pacifist or even what it meant to him. However, he enjoyed playing pool, an occasional beer and that evening he ignored the unwritten rule governing the patriotic patrons of a working class saloon. All of us knew there were certain places where longhaired hippies were not welcome, but Chuck was disinclined to accommodate redneck prejudices and besides, "it had a damn good pool table and cheap beer!"
While he generally went with Fred or another member of the staff, this particular evening he went on his own. Ignoring the customary glares and the muttering about "damned hippie scum", he played a solitary game of pool, drank two beers and left.
Two or three patrons followed him and proceeded to kick the shit out of him. He may have lost consciousness, he really wasn't sure, but, he added triumphantly, "Those bastards couldn't get a raise out of me, they couldn't make me lift a finger!"
Leaving us to debate the issues of pacifism, self-defence and righteous retribution, Chuck turned on his side, gingerly wrapped his arms around his bride to be and fell asleep.
I am writing to you in hopes of you joining the Green Movement that is sweeping the nation. It is imperative that we as consumers and citizens of the world act to save our world. Please join us.
In view of the City of San Francisco ban on the use of plastic bags, and top retailers in the UK agreeing to cut their usage by 25%, I ask you to make every effort possible to follow suit on a national basis. It would not only help our world as a whole, it would be a large public relations boost for retailers such as yourself if you were to take it on voluntarily.”

FIVE FOR RETAILERS, AND A PLEDGE:
Save Sea Turtles from Extinction - Take the Plastic Bag Pledge
Each year, thousands of sea turtles choke on plastic bags after mistaking them for jellyfish, a favorite food.
Leatherback turtles have been around for 100 million years, but if changes are not made for these turtles, they could be wiped out from the Pacific Ocean in just ten more years.
Did you know that between 4 and 5 trillion plastic bags are used each year globally, and each one can take between 500 to 1000 years to decompose?
Moreover, other sea critters like sea lions and dolphins have also been found with their stomachs filled with plastic bags!
By reducing plastic bag use and recycling or reusing plastic bags, everyone can help these ancient creatures.
Sign the pledge below to signify your commitment to reduce your plastic bag use, and add a comment to share your ideas on how.

Dear ones, I truly wish you would be living in a world better than the one I lived in as a child. I'm sorry, but it doesn't seem likely. In my world the we had lots of fresh water and our crops were abundant. There were more wild creatures than you could count, free roaming elephants, polar bears, dolphins and whales. Every year songbirds migrated from down south up to the Boreal forests for their nesting season and you could hear the wolves howl if you visited the National Parks. The air was sweet to breathe and we could enjoy outdoor activities year round.
"What happened?"you might ask. Simply put, we got very, very greedy and ignorant. We thought we could have it all and kept taking more and more and more. We cut down forests and used them for toilet paper. We created more and more throw away products and saw nothing wrong about using the oceans as a garbage can. We assumed that the earth resources belonged to us and that they would never run out. We built bigger and bigger houses and ignored the hungry & the homeless.
We got so caught up in our material cravings, that we ignored what the governments and the corporations were doing. Before long, the rich got even richer and our so called representatives only represented themselves and the ones who financed them. That is why the government spent more and more upon weapons and less and less upon health, education and the environment. That is also why your life expectancy is less than mine and why there are no more fish in the oceans.
Could we have stopped it? Good question, maybe if we had stopped supporting all those corporations, stopped buying so much stuff, started living in smaller homes, outlawed gas-guzzling cars, industrial fishing fleets and applied the Golden Rule a bit more liberally, we could have. But we didn't and so you are paying the price.
I truly wish we had thought more of you and less of ourselves . I hope and pray that you will survive the harsh reality you live in and that you will forgive us.

I have another story to add to my ''now I've seen everything'' file. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, thousands of consumers have responded enthusiastically to its offer of free endangered species sounds, re-mastered as ring tones for cell phones. These would be the very same cell phones that require transmission sites, the ones that scar the landscape and contribute more towers, metal and waves to our neighborhoods and open lands. Is it me, or is this the most awkward, and improbable, marriage of nature and technology ever?
Why settle for a pop song or a sound bite from a favorite movie when your phone can alert you to an incoming call with the sound of a mountain yellow-legged frog instead? A press release stated that the organization offers about 40 sounds, ostensibly for people searching for just the right ring tone to signify their environmental awareness. For now, the most popular nature sound for cell phones is the orca whale, but people who visited the center's Web site also appear to be entranced by the sounds of the Beluga whale, boreal owl, blue-throated macaw and Yosemite toad. In the coming weeks, it plans to add the polar bear, gray wolf and many more species to the list of choices.
As you select your free ring tone from the center's Web site, you can also download information and photos about that particular animal, aquatic creature, bird or reptile and read more about what you can do to preserve wildlife and save the species from extinction. According to Peter Galvin, the center's director, ''Ringing phones are now starting conversations about the need to protect endangered species.''
That may well be true, but ringing phones — at least those that utilize a bird's call — may start another kind of conversation. Paul Schmidt, assistant director for the migratory birds program at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, states that cell phone towers are just the latest in technology towers that have threatened birds for decades. In a Los Angeles Times article that appeared in November, he claimed ''We're talking millions of birds dying because of these towers.'' The truth is, ever since the advent of the lighthouse, birds have been drawn to beacons of light that provide a warning or a welcome to ships and aircraft. But the proliferation of towers, due to the broadcasting industry and now, cellular technology, have dramatically increased the number of lights in the sky across the country, far away from the coasts and mountaintops that previously housed these towers. (In 1996, there were 24,802 cellular transmitting sites in this country. By 2006, that number had grown to 197,576, although not all of these are individual towers.) Estimates of the annual death toll among migratory birds due to dangers posed by cell towers alone ranges from 4 million to some 50 million birds.
The Los Angeles Times article quoted another official from the Fish and Wildlife Service who also has reservations about adding towers to the national landscape. Albert Manville, a senior wildlife biologist in the Division of Migratory Bird Management said, ''These structures continue to grow exponentially and we're going to see more and more problems.''
There is a way to make the towers more wildlife friendly, and it comes at a high price. Some studies have shown that blinking white lights are less hazardous to birds than steady-burning red lights, but this type of strobe lighting is considerably more expensive than a steady light. If tower builders and cellular companies reconfigure their systems, guess who will pay the bill for those less harmful lights? (On the other hand, most communities don't want distracting blinking lights on their towers; they prefer a steady red light.)
But, back to those wildlife ring tones. You could argue that the Center for Biological Diversity is simply embracing the genie that can't be but back in the bottle — cell phones — and using them to call attention to the plight of all kinds of endangered species. If even a small percentage of cell phone users learn about the environment and the dangers we pose to a number of animals through irresponsible or unsafe behavior, that's a good outcome.
It just still seems odd to me that the very lifeblood of cell phone technology, the transmission towers that carry signals from place to place to place and cut down on those annoying ''dropped calls,'' may result in more than a few — pardon the expression — dropped birds.
We emerged from the sea, some of our relations remained within its depths. Others abandoned the land and sought refuge within the tides and waves. I feel a special kinship with one of them. Perhaps that is why I dream of swiming with the dolphins and have chosen it for my Guardian Totem.
Yet I am a creature of the earth and shall offer these few reflections on what my home means to me.
This small blue disk swimming among the stars in a galactic sea, is worthy of our reverence, our care and our respect.
It is home to tall redwoods, creeping mosses, sparklng waters, sky kissing meadow larks and more varieties of life than I can imagine or recount.
Once it was home to shaggy herds of bison, prides of lions and the cod fisheries of Newfoundland. They are nearly gone, victims to trophy hunters, factory ships and civilization.
The earth is a matrix for spiritual growth, a womb for our souls and the taskmaster for our civilizations.
This taskmaster demands self-discipline, restraint and sacrifice.Otherwise we will be living in cities choked by polluted air, surrounded by a landscape denuded of wild life, never to see dolphins cavorting in the surf , hear the song of the lark or the howl of the wolf. We must learn to live within nature's boundaries and curb our natural tendency to consider our needs, our wants and our desires before all else.
What does this mean? Each of us must decide how to walk upon the earth. However I believe three human assumptions regarding our 'Rights' must be eliminated,.
1-The right of unrestrained thinking: Because, as individuals, and groups we may think and believe what we will, Nature (sooner or later) demands that we continually test our best thoughts through both individual and social experience.
2-The right of unrestrained breeding: Because, as individuals and groups we often breed indiscriminately, - Nature (sooner or later) demands that we ultimately live within the limitations of our material and social environments.
3-The right of unrestrained owning, and controlling: Because, both as individuals and groups we are limited by our mortality, (sooner or later) we are forced by Nature to surrender our individual and corporate goods and services to other (we hope more capable) heads and hands.
Human institutions, whether familial, ecclesiastical, or governmental are limited by these inexorable demands of Nature;- and we humans had better restrain our impulses to act willy-nilly upon these false assumptions, - and set about seriously to order our individual and social behavior by accepting responsibility for our thoughts, breeding habits, and economic circumstances!
Some nasty things happened to me this week. The volunteer garden I had created over the last 3 years was dug up. The men the new Lease holders hired took all my trees, roses, and plants and used them in a new landscaping design. I'm glad they are being re-used but a bit unhappy over the trashing of my boxes, containers and all the bulbs I planted. I did protest, but was informed that I had no right to anything on the property since the new lease went into effect! ( The last 2 lease holders had given me permission) It would have been nice, if I had had some warning!
It would be easy for me to remain hurt and offended by the sheer rudeness of it all, but I'm not one to dwell on the things or the people who hurt me.Life is simply too short! So I meditated on this little bit of humour my daughter, Penny sent me
