WE ALL MUST WRITE AND CALL IN PROTEST OF THIS NEGLECT AND ABUSE! Highlights from below: HE IS TETHERED MOST OF THE TIME, OUT IN ALL KINDS OF WEATHER, NO SHELTER ( a small dog house that does not fit him and both Animal Control and Police Department deem it "adequate shelter" ): CHAINED FOR OVER 8 HRS AT A TIME, OFTEN OVERNIGHT! VERY THIN/FLEA BITTEN, LACKS ADEQUATE FOOD AND WATER; SURROUNDED BY FECES IN THE YARD, LAYING ON DIRT WITH NO GRASS BECAUSE IT IS ALL GONE DUE TO HIM LYING THERE IN THE SAME SPOT. CONTACT: Ms Diane P. Webber Manager, Animal Care and Control City of Cedar Rapids 2901 North Towne NE Cedar Rapids, IA 52402 Office: 319-286-5908 Cell: 319-538-2309 or 515-991-7121 Fax: 319-294-6629 eMail: D.Webber@cedar-rapids.org http://www.cedar-rapids.org/animal (rate my service: http://www.cedar-rapids.org/citymanager/survey_city.asp ) - link apparently now being blocked by the city administrator... PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE, ACT NOW ON GONZO'S BEHALF, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE AND HE BECOMES ANOTHER "FACELESS STATISTIC"! Thank you! Ms. Webber, My name is Melinda Sosa and just left you a voice message on your cellular number I found on line of 319-538-2309. You seem to be the best person for me to make initial contact with regarding a neglected/abused dog situation in Cedar Rapids. I understand that tonight you have an "Open House" to allow the public to review proposed revisions to the Chapter 23 Dogs, Cats, and Other Animals ordinances so you may not be able to immediately respond but please do take time to follow up on my concern. I have rescued dogs for over 15 years and live in South Central Iowa. My husband and I respect and love the Rottweiler breed. Today, I received this email forward from other rescue organization directors, coordinators and supporters as far reaching as Virginia. Needless to say I'm very concerned about the dog that is of concern, Gonzo, that lives within your jurisdiction at: 1051 33rd Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I have left the body of the email below for you to see what information is being shared nationally about this dog in need and the pictures below. With you being the Manager of the City of Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control you should be able to confirm or deny if this dog is in need. From the pictures there is little doubt in my mind the dog needs to be removed immediately. I have a rescue organization that is willing to accept Gonzo into rescue. My husband and I are willing to immediately drive to Cedar Rapids and take custody of him in order to get him on to the rescue organization in Wisconsin. Please contact me via email or by phone at 515-366-6760 as soon as possible. Thank you for your time Melinda Forwarded Email: This is the report from the concerned citizen who sees this every single day! Gonzo lives at 1051 33rd St NE Cedar Rapids, Iowa and he is in the back yard right behind the Garage. His the owner, 26yrs old with a long criminal history, her last charge was for possession of illegal drugs in Jan. 2010 does not deserve protection by the law to continue this obvious neglect of Gonzo! He is a SUPER Sweet and friendly Rottie, how long will it be before he becomes dangerous when he is treated this way? AC and PD are not enforcing any of the Cedar Rapids animal ordinances or doing their jobs. All they say that Gonzo is fine. Last night 7/21/2010 Gonzo was out chained ALL NIGHT, HE IS NOT FINE. HE IS VERY THIN, FLEA BITTEN, LACKS ADEQUATE FOOD AND WATER. CHAINED FOR OVER 8 HRS AT A TIME AND ALOT OF TIMES OVERNIGHT. WHEN HE IS NOT CHAINED HE IS IN A CRATE WITH NO AC IN THE HOUSE. GONZO HAS NEVER HAD THE FREEDOM TO RUN, PLAY AND WALK. HE IS TETHERED MOST OF THE TIME. OUT IN ALL KINDS OF WEATHER, NO SHELTER. A SMALL DOG HOUSE THAT DOES NOT FIT HIM AND AC AND PD SAY IT IS ADEQUATE SHELTER. BS. JUST PATHETIC AND I SEE THIS EVERYDAY. GONZO LIVES BEHIND ME AND I CHECK ON HIM EVERYDAY. Dear Friends,

Another bust probably not more than an hour to an hour and a half from the one in Kaufman, Tx. They have used up all their food the first day. Hopefully, they got some donations Friday and Saturday. Not to take anything away from the effort in Kaufman but this one is not receiving the same attention and it also sounds like they are in desperate need.

If anyone wishes to help out with our immediate need of donated food, please let me know and we will coordinate it. The dogs went thru 100# of food this morning and at this pace we will need lots more food to feed them.

We won't know the disposition of the dogs until after the court case, if they will become property of Nacogdoches or go back where they were.  So please do not ask about taking them into rescue, we won't know anything for a while yet.

If anyone can help please contact me via email.  Shelter is overwhelmed right now and I am trying to help with the load.

Thank you

Addendum:

Lone Star Feeds here in town has agreed to take credit card donations over the phone for the Nacogdoches dogs.  Because the area the dogs came from is called Kingstown, we set it up in an account called Kingstown dogs.

Lone Star's phone number is 936 560 8275 and ask for Linda.

They are open today until 5:30, Saturday until noon, and will be closed until Monday.

There are all kinds of small breeds... Maltese, Chihuahua, Llasa, just about everything you can think of. If you live anywhere in the area, Canton, Texas and you are vet tech or rescuer or animal lover and want to help please READ:

Subject: TX: Instructions for helping with Kaufman puppy mill rescues

I'm sure by now many of you have heard about the massive HSUS puppy mill raid in Kaufman, TX today.  This was a most amazing effort that came together extremely quickly through a joint effort by HSUS, Petsmart Charities, and UAN.

After getting their inspectors there, the national heads of the HSUS and their puppy-mill team flew into Dallas yesterday, had rescue contacts working ahead to recruit vets and volunteers, served the warrant at the puppy mill just a couple of hours ago, and right now they are loading up SIX HUNDRED (600) small dogs of every breed you can think in buses and transporting them to the staging area.

Catharine, who you've heard about on these emails, has been out there all day with fellow rescuers and says the condition of these animals is just horrific, infuriating, and heartbreaking.  There are 4 buildings full of dogs on the puppy mill property - every small breed you can imagine, including 1 day and 2 day old puppies in cages and dogs just roaming free all over the property - and they have literally just gotten the 1st building loaded up and are on their way to the staging area with them, so this will all be going well into the middle of the night tonight.  There are Cavaliers, Chihuahuas, Lhasas, Maltese, every small breed you can think of.  And there are still 350 more that must be loaded up and rescued today.

The staging area is the Kaufman County Fairground Rodeo Coral  (HWY 34 and 175).  This will be the staging area from now until the court hearing, which will hopefully officially transfer ownership of these dogs to rescue.

Rescuers have been out there since yesterday afternoon assembling 500 brand new kennels donated by Petsmart Charities, and they're there now helping with the rescue, transport, and logging in of each of the dogs.  And they need HELP - with feeding, watering, walking, vetting, everything!

There is huge need for

1) vet techs today

2) vets and vet techs tomorrow

3) responsible volunteers around the clock.

If you have the evening free tonight, and would like to make good use of it, they ask that you please just show up there and volunteer yourself, they'll direct you.

If you have questions that really require answering, you can contact Leslie Engelmann (214-763-9468) or Kristina Bowman at (469) 682-8150 for more information. They are there in the midst of it, so if you don't get them, try again, it's obviously chaotic.

And this need for help will continue for the next few weeks, so if you can help any day this week or weekend, please e-mail your name, phone number, what days and/or hours you can help to dogshsccl@yahoo. com.

Note: this will be HOT and DIRTY and SMELLY and EMOTIONAL. Tough, caring, motivated individuals are needed!

Kaufman County is well-known as home to one of the largest outdoor flea markets in the state,
Canton's First Monday Trade Days.

Ironically, the Texas Legislature, in its recently ended 2009 session had a chance to pass a 'puppy mill bill" which  would have regulated large commercial dog breeders.  But that bill failed after it was opposed by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association.

What has happened to these animals is wrong on so many levels - how awesome to have a part in showing them a new life!

Nancy

This heroic dog is in boarding at Dirty Dawgs in North Carolina undergoing heartworm treatment. He is the pittie that faithfully circled his friend, the rottie, after he was hit by a car! Truman meaning "faithful man" was pulled at the eleventh hour to save his life. He has been widely posted on yahoo and donations were requested for him to undergo heartworm treatment. This medical treatment cost around $1,000 and this is exclusive of boarding.

The problem is he still has no foster or adopter and I am very worried for him! They are not going to be able to keep him in foster care much longer. TIME is running out! Please if you know anyone that can get him into a foster home please contact me ASAP! If you can adopt him, ditto!

And if you know anywhere else to post him or have "pittie" contacts please contact them on his behalf.

Hello Care 2,
This is an update from Deborah Hoffman on the Corridor Dogs in Houston. Spring has definately sprung in Texas and so has increased concern for the dogs. It will be HOT soon. Man will it be hot and humid. Texas has hot like nobody else. Already plenty of dogs with heartworm needing treatment. And just look at the big beautiful white and gray (okay, maybe brown or black, hard to tell)  dog with the fluffy tail. He would just be a great dog to have on a rural property. Come on Texans, I know you are on Care 2. Let's help our dogs!!!!
You can distribute flyers for SNAP on 3-24! Last one was a HUGE success. Also, radio interviews to listen to. You can rescue, adopt, foster, and of course, DONATE!
UPDATE #10

Erin Go Bark!  Hopefully the luck of the Irish, and the English, and the Italian, and the Greek, and the Spanish, and the luck of just about everybody will be with the Corridor dogs on St. Patrick's Day and throughout the month of March and well into the summer.  They will certainly need luck and blessings aplenty to survive.  Already we are thinking about the warm months to come and worrying about these dogs living on the streets.  Summertime in Houston is not a pleasant experience for homeless animals - the grueling heat does take its toll.  But! ....we have already managed to save 52 lives in the Corridor and we can all do the math and figure just how many lives of suffering those rescues have prevented.

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has helped these 52 fortunate souls!!!

May their coats stay shiny, their noses stay cold, and their foodbowls stay full.

SNAP in the Corridor on Feburary 23 was a HUGE success - 24 animals were altered!  Thank you SNAP Team - you are the best!!!!

FOSTERS AND RESCUERS NEEDED!!!

Please consider if you could take in a Corridor dog and bring him/her back to life.  Let me know ASAP if you are able to take any of the dogs listed below or help capture and transport them..  Remember that any dogs previously listed as needing rescue in past updates, STILL DO if they are not listed in the SAFE category of any subsequent update.
