I would like you to read about a post recently received at Care 2 from a girl in Romania who is an animal rescuer. She posted to the group, People Helping Animals Worldwide. I will post the link at the end of this share to her story. Delia is a rescuer in Romania. She uses her own funds for all her rescue work. She has been caring for an injured Schnauzer mix, Mimi, that she had placed at a factory where she was to be provided a cozy place to sleep, food, and medical care. If this sounds strange to you, remember, this is Romania. There are very few animal shelters there like in the United States and no real vet services for animals in general.
Outside contractors were working in the plant and Delia believes one of them clubbed her injuring her spine. The office workers upon arriving at work and finding Mimi, contacted Delia and she immediately rushed to Mimi's side. She got her to a doctor and the doctor did surgery removing two damaged vertebrae. The spinal cord was intact but Mimi's hind quarters are paralyzed. This was in 2007. Delia has been caring for this dog like an infant ever since in addition to the 6 dogs and 7 cats she already had. She sponsors another 15 with food and accomodation. She's pursued every option to help Mimi even managing to get her an MRI in a human hospital. How she did that I will never know. Delia obtained a cart for Mimi to get around in outside. She states Mimi is less incontinent than she used to be but still wears diapers, she moves her tail when she dreams and scratches her hind feet with her teeth, which is some indication that the neurons are beginning to respond, just very slowly.
Delia's main purpose in writing was to ask if someone would take Mimi in the United States that could get her physical therapy as this is just not available there. She is very, very attached to this dog and while she has offered to try to help pay for Mimi's treatment, I don't know how realistic this is. If necessary, I think she would permanently part with Mimi if that is what it took to get help for her. There is just no more she can do for her and she so wants to see Mimi walk again.
One of the reasons I am writing is that Delia only has about thirty minutes out of every day to work on her computer. I can only imagine how exhausted Delia is. She is one in a million. A truly remarkable woman.
If you go to the link, you will see not only Mimi but Rocco a dog in dire need of surgery that Delia just rescued. She was able to save the leg.
I would like to do a fund raiser for Delia to help her with her work in Romania. I have learned that 1 U.S. dollar will feed a dog in Romania, give or take, for about thirty days. I would also like to see Delia possibly hire some help. She gets about four hours of sleep a night.
As for Mimi, I am just going to have to keep looking for someone to adopt and/or foster/sponsor Mimi's treatments. Physical therapy is very expensive as you all know. I cannot hope to try to raise those type of funds here. I am hoping some institution will step forward to help Mimi.
Any suggestions you have about places to write to for Mimi and about doing a fund raiser for Delia, and whether you would participate, would be most appreciated.
