Since 1989, there has been a 99.3% increase in food bank use in Canada. In a typical month, over 753,000 Canadians need food from a food bank to make ends meet. They are single parents, children, seniors, people with disabilities and even people with jobs. In fact, 13.4% of these people have jobs, yet still cannot afford to feed their families. Even worse, 41% are children.

"The goal of these amendments to the Migratory Birds Regulations is to help protect and restore the biological diversity of arctic wetland ecosystems and the ecosystems of important migration and wintering areas, by reducing the population size of overabundant snow goose populations. To curtail the rapid population growth and reduce population size to a level consistent with the carrying capacity of breeding habitats over a period of about five years, the mortality rate must be increased by two to three times the level of the past decade."

I have just created and signed the petition:
"Establish maximum wait times for mental illnesses"

Target: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister and First Ministers, Prime Minister's Office

In the 2004 Health Accord, the Government of Canada ear-marked $5 million to reduce wait times in 5 areas: joint replacement, sight restoration, cancer care, cardiac surgery and diagnostic imaging. What about severe mental illness?
We, the undersigned, call upon the Prime Minister and First Ministers of Canada to add the treatment of severe mental disorders to their priorities for wait-time reduction.

According to Health Canada, more than four million Canadians are suffering from an identifiable mental illness at any given time. Only one-third of them are getting treatment.

In a position paper published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, the group argues that prompt treatment is essential because of the stigma associated with mental illness, and the disabling nature of conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, panic disorder and mood disorders.

"For most of us, the worry of 'losing your mind' is the most disabling thing that can happen to us," the paper states. It establishes maximum wait times for five "sentinel" mental illnesses: psychosis, mania, hypomania, postpartum mood disorder, major depression.

According to Dr. Blake Woodside, chairman of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and director of the eating-disorders program at Toronto General Hospital, what is truly tragic is that delays in treatment routinely result in a worsening of a person's condition and worse outcomes -- at great cost to individuals and the health system.

"Right now, if you show up in ER suicidal, you will get care, but if you want a consultation for a serious mental-health problem, it will take many months to be seen," Dr. Woodside said.

Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference. Please sign here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/165620023

Cheers!

I've just signed the ONE Declaration committing myself to help fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty.

The first thing I'm doing is asking you to make that commitment, too.

So far, over two million have signed the declaration in support of a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world.

I think your name belongs on that declaration, too.  You can put it there by visiting:

December 6, the anniversary of the Montreal massacre, is Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. We encourage men to wear a white ribbon and to participate in commemorative events open to men. But the WRC does not organize events on December 6, nor do we make public statements unless requested by women's groups. Why? Because we think it should be a day for men to step back and listen to the voices of women.

Antipersonnel landmines are still being laid today. These - and mines from previous conflicts - continue to claim victims in every corner of the globe each day. The situation has improved in recent years, but a global mine crisis remains and there is still a lot to be done before we live in a mine-free world.

The recent coverage of President Bush's new US landmine policy sugar-coats a major policy rollback.   The 1997 Mine Ban Treaty has made a tremendous, life-saving impact throughout the world.  More than 52 million mines have been destroyed from global stockpiles, trade of the stigmatized weapon has slowed to a trickle, hundreds of thousands of mines have been removed from the ground, most countries have given up use of the weapon, and casualty rates have declined dramatically.  US refusal to join this treaty gives political cover to countries such as Russia, India, and Pakistan, which have laid hundreds of thousands of mines in recent years with devastating consequences for innocent victims.

Though President Clinton failed to sign the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, he did create a policy that would put the US on track to join the treaty by 2006.  The new Bush policy rejects any notion that the US will join the treaty, puts off the destruction of "persistent" landmines until 2010, and asserts that our military may use self-deactivating "smart" mines indefinitely.  These so-called "smart" mines cannot discriminate between the foot of a soldier and that of a child, tend to be scattered by air and are thus difficult to mark and map, pose tremendous challenges and costs for demining teams, and threaten the lives and limbs of innocent civilians and US troops who step on the weapons soon after they've been planted.

Meanwhile, reportedly, the US military hasn't used antipersonnel landmines since 1991.  Let's join the majority of the world in giving up this cruel, outmoded, and indiscriminate weapon!

A Proposal to Ban the Importation
of Wild-caught Birds into the European Union

A Campaign of the World Parrot Trust

One of the strongest messages we can send to the European Union is the fact that there are thousands of people from Europe and around the world who feel that it's time to stop capturing birds from the wild. The process is cruel and represents the unacceptable exploitation of the natural resources of developing countries. The EU has now become the largest importer of wild caught birds and the existing legislation in Europe is ineffective at stopping the inhumane and unsustainable harvesting of these wild birds.

Although we plan to take several approaches to see this campaign through to its rightful conclusion, you can help a great deal by simply signing the petition below to add your voice to thousands of others in support of our goal of allowing wild birds to remain where they belong ... in the wild.

Please take a moment to fill out the petition at
http://www.worldparrottrust.org/trade/tradeform.htm
and make your voice heard.

Thank you very much for your support on this critical issue.
