Friends,

The fate of the whales hangs in the balance. Greenpeace's fastest ship, the Esperanza, has been chasing the Japanese whaling ship for 5 days now, over hundreds of miles through fog and increasingly rough seas. The high speed chase has driven the factory ship Nisshin Maru out of the hunting grounds where they hoped to kill 1000 whales, including 50 endangered fin whales.

All whaling has stopped -- for now.

But we need your help to keep our ship on the seas. Facebook has launched a Giving Challenge, and the cause with the greatest number of donors each day wins $1000. The cause with the most donors by February 1st wins a grand prize of $50,000! This would go a long way to fund the expedition, and to keep our ship between the whales and the grenade-tipped harpoons of the whalers.

URGENT! TAKE ACTION TODAY: Join the "Stop the Whale Hunt!" Facebook Cause and donate $10.

Here's how:
1) Create an account on Facebook if you don't have one yet.

2) Join the Stop the Whale Hunt cause here: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/view_cause/54259. If you haven't added the "cause application" to your Facebook profile yet, it will prompt you to add it. Just click "add application".

3) Donate $10. This is the minimum donation to qualify for the competition to win $50,000. If you'd like to give more, please consider spacing it out over the course of a few days, as there are prizes for causes with the most donors each day.

If the Nisshin Maru does try to start whaling again, we're ready to do what we do best. We'll use high-powered water pumps from the back of our boats to create a curtain of water and shield the whales from the harpooners' view. We will do nothing to harm or endanger the Japanese vessels or crew. We will, however, use all peaceful means at our disposal to stop the killing of any more whales.

We’re doing our part to protect the whales here in the Southern Ocean. You can too. You don’t have to place yourself in harm’s way to protect whales you can take action on Facebook today!

With the Facebook Giving Challenge, NOW is the best time to help save whales.

Thanks,

Greenpeace USA
