It's snowing here in the Piedmont of North Carolina. This is the first snow my chickens have experienced. I went out this morning and opened their house so they could get out into their pasture for grazing, grains and water for the day. I bent over to rid their waterer of ice and all of a sudden I had a chicken on my back. She had stepped out of the chicken house and been startled by the snow. I was the closest thing to light on so she flew onto my bent over back!! It was hilarious. As I slowly stood up, she climbed up my back until she was sitting on my shoulder. This is a 6 or 7 pound bird!! I loved it. I walked her back to the chicken house door and she flew down and ran into the house. Later, I shooed all the chickens out so they could eat. As they got used to the snow, they began grazing. These birds are so much fun.

Two months ago, after a year of research and 6 months of building my mobil chicken house with electro-net fencing, I acquired 12 pullets and 1 rooster.  I've never had chickens before and didn't know exactly what to expect in terms of their behavior and personalities.  What a surprise to find out how friendly and trusting they are.  I have three breeds: Rhode Island Reds, Americanas, and Barred Rocks.  The girls will start laying after the days begin to lengthen.  The Americanas will lay bluish colored eggs and the rest will lay brown eggs.

My funniest story so far is two days after I had them, I opened the door to their coop to let them out into their large fenced yard.  They had all been raised in confinement and so were scared of "freedom".  I had to pick up each one and plop it out the door saying, "everybody out."  The next day, all I had to do was say, "OK, everybody out." and they piled out through the door.  Now they are anxious to jump out and eat/drink every morning!

What delightful critters!
