It's Dan from Uncaged here, with the latest dispatch on our growing campaign to stop Herbal Essences testing on animals.

We've just found out that Marina Barker, UK External Relations Director for Herbal Essences' manufacturers Procter & Gamble, has written a panicky letter to British Members of Parliament. In this letter, P&G try to give the false impression that they don't test on animals for the sake of cosmetics. This email update cuts through the corporate spin to explain what's really going on. And, if you're in the UK, please use this note to explain the truth to your MP or to reply to MPs who are reluctant to sign our EDM 1279 which praises the boycott and is entitled 'Animal Testing of Cosmetics'.

We understand that some MPs have misinterpreted her letter to mean that P&G does not conduct animal tests for the sake of cosmetics products (a practice which has been banned in the UK since 1998). I suspect that this is how P&G intend the letter to be interpreted. However, as I shall explain, P&G continue poison animals in toxicity tests for cosmetics products.

First of all, when Ms Barker claims that P&G do not test their beauty products on animals, this is misleading because:

(a) P&G’s own websitedirect evidence of animal testing of a chemical found in most of the Herbal Essences range. This chemical - butylparaben - was tested and declared safe many years ago. However, P&G force-fed butylparaben to pregnant rats to see if it harmed their developing offspring in a test that killed 100 pregnant mothers and their 1,200 baby animals.lobbyinghttp://ukconsumers.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ukconsumers.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=6215&p_created=1124100191&p_sid=SQ4uxX4j&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD02NiZwX3Byb2RzPTI4OSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9MS4yODkmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9Nw**&p_li=&p_topview=1

With best wishes

It would seem that the real story of Sean Kirtley's plight has been picked up by the national press (Independent) we hope this will raise the profile of Sean's case and have already been told by Seans legal team that this should help his appeal no end

Please write a letter to them to keep this story in the forefront! Say thanks for the article!

PA - Perkiomenville SPCA - Max and Dutchess

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9666613

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9666565

THIS PAIR NEED OUR HELP!!!
The good news is that this shelter is extremely committed to this pair and to keeping them as a pair. They have an extensive past history with the entire Montgomery County SPCA and there is a good deal of personal investment.
Adoption fees are waived for rescues, they both have shots, worming and have been spayed/neutered. The SPCA feels that they are not in 'eminate' danger of euthanasia.
The bad news is Max is extremely cat agressive and has killed cats in the past. Per past owner report, they are not housebroken, but their history, that I shall share later, will shed light on this. At the shelter, they do mess only in the outside run, if given the opportunity to do so, ie. kennel not shut. They have not been screened for heartworm or microchipped. They were posted to another, local rescue site, but pulled due to Max's cat issues.
Their history is perhaps the most heartbreaking: Dutchess was adopted from their Abington facility, brought back, re-homed for 4 yrs and brought back (reason unknown). Max was adopted from the same facility, by a couple who also adopted Dutchess. Both were returned 3-4 years later when the couple divorced. They were moved to the Perkiomenville facility, to enable them to stay together. The shelter stongly wanted to place them together, due to their history and finally allowed them to be adopted together, by someone who owned his own constuction business, not necessarily to be guard dogs, but to go to sites with him, etc. This person visited the pair regularly at the shelter, seemed very invested and although there were some red flags, there was also pressure 'from above' that these dogs were not moving and had been at the facility quite some time. The shelter put strong constraints on this adopter, checked several times, only to find that he was not in compliance with them, allowing the dogs to remain in the home, unattended, for long periods of time. I assume this is where the housebreaking issue entered the picture. As humans do, this person evaded the monitoring by the Perkiomenville facility by retuning him to the Conshohocken facility (so clever, huh?) By the grace of God, the manager of the Perkiomenville facility was there while they were being returned and took them back, which is why their date listed on the site is October 21-although they have been there much longer!
There is currently an application for Max, although that person does not want to take Dutchess, due to space constraints. Dutchess is an alpha female.
IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN KEEP THIS PAIR - WHO HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR SOOOOO LONG - TOGETHER?
Contact info for them, and the two most commited to their well-being is:
WEEKDAYS: Christopher Langiotti - 8:30-9 is best, but call anytime until 5pm., Weds. after 1 pm. 610-754-7822
WEEKENDS: 'Phil' (who I talked to)- 610-754-7822 or 484-792-1572 - personal cell
AGAIN- They are VERY ANXIOUS to keep them together and they are VERY COMMITTED to this pair!

"SHEP" in Peninsula, OH (near Cleveland/Akron)

"SHEP" is an approximately 2-year-old GSD boy who came to the Humane Society of Greater Akron back in March as a cruelty case
. He has since recovered and is now looking for his new home. This Humane Society is no-kill, except in cases where the animal is
too ill or otherwise unadoptable. However, the volunteer who sent Shep's information says that the shelter life is really wearing
on him, and he needs to get out as soon as possible before he becomes unadoptable, so I put him in the Urgent category.I do not
have any further information about Shep, but his Petfinder information is included below. If you'd like to learn more about
Shep or would like to give him a new home, please contact the Humane Society of Greater Akron in Peninsula, OH at the
number given below.Peninsula, OH is right between Cleveland and Akron.

Shep

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Sex: Male

Age: Adult

Size: Large

From: Humane Society of Greater Akron Shep arrived at the HSGA, back in early March, he was severely emaciated and part of a
cruelty case. He has put some of his weight back on and is ready to find that perfect home. Shep MUST go home with an
experienced dog owner. Someone who has the time and knowledge to make Shep the great dog we know he can be. He is smart
and has great potential, but needs someone with the experience to get him there. Shep does know some basic commands like
how to sit and lay down. Shep would do best in a home with no small children and as the only pet. Shep is around 2 years old.

Lexi is a 2 year old Border Collie mix that was brought to the shelter on Nov. 21, 2007 by her previous owners who could no
longer care for her. She is a little shy when she first meets you, and it will take a little time for her to warm up to you.
Lexi is good on a leash, very friendly and active. She is great with children and other dogs, but the previous owners stated
she was not good with cats. Lexi will need to go to a "cat free" home. She will also need spayed upon adoption. She has a

Baby Girl is a German Shephard !+ years of age. She is a smart girl who knows how to sit, come, and lay down. She likes to play with toys and appears to be housetrained. She also has a spay sponsor.

4 yo Shady needs a home!

Shady is a full-blooded German Shepard. She is about 4 years old. Her family couldn't keep her and now she is looking for a forever family.
UPDATE:

More information on "ShadY":
I was at this shelter today(which isn't too far from me) for another reason but did check on this girl while I was there. The shelter is in a rural location but they are VERY nice to work with and are more than willing to work with rescues.

Shady is 4 years old, spayed, and utd on all her vaccinations. Owner turn- in who states she is good with children, but not good with "other animals". hmmm...
She's a pretty low key layed back dog who looked at me with apprehension but didn't shy away and intentionally came to the end of her run to greet me. They took her outside on a leash and the poor girl was literally trembling inside when I first petted and hugged her. The guys who work in the kennels said she is afraid of the noise and racket in the kennels, but once away from the kennel noise she is relaxed. No sign of aggression or timidness towards me, just uncertainty as to my intentions. She let me handle her feet, check her ears, teeth, and be petted all over and accepted big bear hugs! I feel really sorry for her as she has seems to be wondering just WHAT she did to be uprooted from her home and dropped in the kennels! A very dignified girl.
They said they've had some inquires on her but potential adopters are put off by the owners statement that she doesn't "get along with other animals". Those who work with the dogs in the kennels are a bit confused also as she hasn't shown any major aggression towards other dogs there! While outside on the leash today she was approached by other dogs that were loose and she honestly didn't show any aggression towards them! One young female Rottie that was tied outside close enough to approach her did get a little overbearing and pushy and Shady snapped at her, but just as a warning, no serious conflict. The Rottie was being way pushy as she was jealous and barking aggressively at Shady if the kennel workers paid her attention. (the Rottie was in no way a mean dog, just young, fun loving and possessive of "her" people") I'm not verifying that she would get along with ALL other dogs, but from seeing her today there wasn't any huge issue with her being dog aggressive. Cats could be another story!

Here is a link to her video... And yes, she is very thin.

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10185132

Isis is 2 years old, has not had the best of times in her life. To start with her mother chewed her ears badly and she was so shy and timid from lack of socialization that she was not good with anyone but she is very socialized now and gets along well with everyone although small children would not be the best, seems to do better with children who are a bit older, most likely because she is insecure herself. She has NO BALL DRIVE so if someone was wanting her for a search dog or special needs, she would not do well.

Injured LHGSD/GSD at Cuyahoga Co. shelter-OH
Subject: Fw: LH GSD at Cuyahoga County shelter -Ohio

Hi Susan
Just a fyi in case you are able to help or network this boy.
Please see the last picture [the other 2 are of another shepherd there- Polaris].
Greg the kennel coordinator called and asked if we could please put the word out about this handsome LH boy. He is approx 2 yrs old, came in as a stray with a leg injury. The vet feels the leg should come off, and will do the surg but there has to be a rescue for this boy 1st. He is not on the adoption floor, he has to go to rescue.
One of the wonderful volunteers took this picture. She said he must be in pain but he was very gentle and just wanted to cuddle. Greg also said he is a very sweet boy.

Subject: Re: 3 shepherds at Cuyahoga

Debbie,

The long haired shepherd has an injury, I believe, to the back paw. I got a pic of her in the cage. Greg said they will get pics tomorrow. If they don't, I will be back in on Sunday.

Sable Girl in OHIO - VERY URGENT
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10041582&mtf=1

She looks frightened - Here is her write-up:

"Shep was adopted & returned. She escaped & went to visit the neighbors & we were called. We called her owners, but they decided they no longer wanted her! Shep is a sweet girl who needs a family to love her! This dog or pup is here through no fault of its own. Dogs with bad temperaments are not put up for adoption. Unfortunately, too few people spay and neuter their dogs. This pup came into this world wishing for warmth, love and care, food, water and exercise -- the things every dog deserves to have. Sadly, for whatever reason, the human in this dog's life was unable to give it those things so it ended up here among the hundreds or thousands who face death just because there are not enough homes for them all. This pound fills up fast and dogs are euthanized on a regular basis so please call 740-992-3779 and leave a message if you are interested in this dog or pup. Also, plan to pick the dog up or have someone pick it up for you ASAP. The hours you are most likely to reach someone are 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM Mon-Sat but you can leave a message if you are interested in a dog. Also, staff is rescue friendly and will try to meet you at other hours if they can. "

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10250826

This boy was picked up as a stray and his humans have not looked for him here. He is a very playful girl who looks to be just at 1 year old. He would nudge my leg with his nose to try and get me to play. He is a big boy weighing about 70 pounds or more. Remember GSDs need a job they are working dogs.

To make sure that this great pet is safe, please come to the shelter before 5 PM on Thursday, February 14. The shelter personnel will make every effort to hold over as many animals as they can, but this is a very small facility with limited space. Many wonderful animals come in each day, in need of new homes. When you adopt one of these pets you are literally saving its life, and you also allow another to have a chance at adoption.

If you can foster an animal, please email us at roicyvolunteers@gmail.com. We would prefer that you be within a short drive of Lafayette, Baton Rouge, or NOLA and that you be able to foster him or her for at least 60 days.

If you are interested in adopting or rescuing one of our animals, please read carefully!
The animals that you see at this site have been either picked up throughout the parish (county) or turned in by their owners who could no longer keep them or no longer wanted them. They have been held for the required amount of time and are now available for adoption with ONLY DAYS LEFT TO LIVE. If you are interested in adoption or rescue, CALL THE CENTER at 337-291-5645 or VISIT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS PETFINDER PAGE IS MAINTAINED BY VOLUNTEERS, NOT BY SHELTER PERSONNEL. DO NOT WAIT FOR A RESPONSE....GO TO THE SHELTER! THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THOSE ANSWERING THE PHONE IS NOT ALWAYS COMPLETE AS THEY DO NOT WORK IN THE KENNELS, SO PLEASE GO IN PERSON.

While we are happy to work with legitimate rescue groups including those from out of state, we do not arrange transport, boarding or foster homes as we have no rescue program of our own and have a very limited staff. If you are with a rescue group who has not previously worked with this shelter , you must make arrangements in advance with Virginia Lee, the shelter director. You are asked to fax to her attention your adoption standards, spay/neuter policy and proof of 501(c)(3) status IN ADVANCE to: 337-291-7051 . Due to the paperwork involved, please allow ample time for paperwork to be completed once you go to Roicy. Follow-up documentation from the vet will be required to show proof of spay/neuter within 30 days and rabies shot within 72 hrs. on each animal pulled by your rescue group.

We are a very small facility with a limited amount of space. Out of state adoptions are allowed, but must be done in person, or with the assistance of a local contact or rescue group. We do not do adoptions over the phone and arrange your transport or ship an animal to you.

These girls HAVE to go to rescue in order to live!

They have pictures available, but I have no idea how to post them. You can contact Mandy Daughtery @ mdaugherty@lexingtonhumanesociety.org

SHE MUST BE SPOKEN FOR BY TUES. OR SHE WILL DIE ON WED.

I don't know if many of you are familiar with the negative publicity regarding this shelter a few weeks ago. It was rumored that dogs were not dead when they were dumped at landfill in plastic bags and covered up. Please know whether true or not, this is not a good place for a dog. One look at her face tells the entire story.
THIS IS AN URGENT PLEA FOR CROSS POSTING HELP. PLEASE KEEP HER BUMPED IF POSSIBLE. Thank you.
