Until we TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN, I will never be sympathetic to our tax dollars being used to support undocumented workers.
We have millions of American citizens of every religion, ethic background, sex and age doing without. We no longer have the seemingly unlimited resources to assume financial responsibility for the citizens of other countries, no matter what their reason for sneaking into America illegally.
The ridiculous lengths that some places in the US go to to accommodate illegal aliens strains the budgets of the communities that do this, to the detriment of those who support the social, medical and educational programs, the AMERICAN WORKING CLASS...and that includes 95% of the population of this country.
Perhaps it's OK with you that your elderly parents suffer indignities because of closin hospitals, rising drug costs, slashed services; perhaps it's OK with you that your kids are left out of the loop in the mess our educational system has become; perhaps it's OK with you that someone in your family is out of a job because some illegal alien will do the work for half the price - but it's NOT OK with me!
And CRAP to the argument that our immigration laws are so "tough." Go apply for Mexican citizenship or a work visa and tell me about how easy it is. AND - Mexico has a FULLY FORTIFIED southern border of its own to keep people from Central and South America from sneaking to their country. Talk about HYPOCRISY. See: MEXICO'S GLASS HOUSE- How the Mexican constitution treats foreigners as well as Mexico's Immigration Law: Let's Try It Here in the USA I always wonder why it is that when the media reports facts that do not agree with people's starry-eyed opinions of issues such as this, people like me are vilified and told to go look at the war funding, yet when that very same DISTRUSTED media reports favorably on an issue to the SAME folks on an issue they support - such as the media adoration of NObama, suddenly the media has it all right. YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS, PEOPLE...and yes , I'm shouting because you who hate the media for its FACTUAL reporting on the statistical evidence of the harm done to this country by illegal aliens swarming in to take advantage of our shrinking resources turn around and KISS the media's ass for swooning over your candidate.
The disgraceful waste of money on the war that is a favorite topic in the immigration argument is a red herring. Do you actually, in your naivete, believe that if all that war money were available for other programs it would and SHOULD go to caring for illegal aliens? NO - it should go to caring for UNDERPRIVILEGED AMERICANS - the old shunted into back rooms at nursing homes, waiting to die, instead of being given the option to be cared for at HOME; to the NATIVE AMERICANS who time and again are F*CKED by this government in education, health care, simple decent housing; to other deprived segments of our citizenry who sleep on sidewalks and and considered throwaway Americans by the rich and powerful. BUT IT WOULDN'T go to those issues either in any case. The shadow government of the US, the multi-nationals and the world banking system have NO INTEREST in the welfare of ANYONE. If they seem to greet the outsourcing of American jobs and the hordes of undocumented workers swarming here to take American jobs for one-third to one-half the pay needed to live a reasonable life in the US, it's because THEY MAKE MONEY FROM IT.
Why don't you direct your anger at the native countries of illegal aliens - most of whom are headed but corrupt dictators and their coteries of rich cronies, who steal their government's funds for their own uses while ignoring the plight OF THEIR OWN PEOPLE? If Mexico would spend its OIL PROFITS - made from SELLING IT TO AMERICA - on its OWN poverty-stricken people, maybe their citizens would be able to create and achieve a MEXICAN DREAM instead of sneaking over here ILLEGALLY and co-opting OURS. Same for all the other corrupt Latino countries south of the border. SPREAD AROUND THAT DRUG MONEY and take care of your own!
And another thing - people prate about the shit*ty conditions in the picking fields of the US. MAYBE IF YOU ACQUAINTED YOURSELVES with the ANTIQUATED LAWS governing agricultural labor in the US, you'd have a fuller picture of why working condition in the fields are so terrible! WHY DON'T YOU AGITATE FOR FULL PROTECTIONS AND BENEFITS AFFORDED OTHER AMERICAN WORKERS FOR THE AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY??? Maybe then Americans wouldn't be so reluctant to take on some of those jobs.
AND FINALLY - discussions about illegals always focus on agricultural labor forgetting the other industries in which undocumented workers are taking over and sucking the wages down to peanuts for Americans who still and used to work in these industries - construction, factory assembly, and other manufacturing spheres. GET REAL. It's NOT ALL ABOUT AGRICULTURE. The influx of illegal workers affects EVERY SPHERE of the American workplace. Do a little homework on the issue before you POP OFF at me and others who are Cassandras crying into an ill-wind of uneducated, all-embracing feel-good nonsense.
This should make everyone think, be you Democrat, Republican or Independent. I DON’T CARE IF THIS LETTER WAS WRITTEN BY A REAL TEACHER, A JOURNALIST, A BLOGGER OR WHOEVER. IT CONTAINS A GREAT DEAL OF TRUTH THAT MOST OF US ARE AFRAID TO ADDRESS PUBLICLY FOR FEAR OF BEING BRANDED A BIGOT, A RACIST, AN ISOLATIONIST OR WORSE.
THERE IS NO SHAME IN FIGHTING TO KEEP OUR COUNTRY’S IDENTITY INTACT AND NO SHAME IN ENFORCING OUR EXISTING IMMIGRATION LAWS. - Cate From a California school teacher:
"As you listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration, there are some things that you should be aware of:
I am in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at a large southern California high school which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socioeconomic and income levels. Most of the schools you are hearing about - South Gate High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc., where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools.
Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast and free lunch program. When I say free b reakfast, I'm not talking a glass of milk and roll, but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)
I estimate that well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately overweight. About 75% have cell phones. The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters without having family members watch their kids. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)
I was ordered to spend $700,000 on my department or risk losing funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; my budget was already substantial. I ended up buying new computers for the computer learning center, half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK).
I have had to intervene several times for young and substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students here in the country less than 3 months who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them "putas" (whores) and throwing things, that the teachers were in tears.
Free medical, free education, free food, day care, etc., etc. etc. Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements?
To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardeners, housekeepers, babysitters etc. and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs.
Higher insurance, med ical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases etc., etc. etc. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.
We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it. Does anyone in their right mind really think illegal aliens will voluntarily leave and return?
There are many hardworking legal immigrants that contribute to our country and many that I consider my true friends. We should encourage and accept the people who have come to America the legal way.
This issue has everything to do with culture: By and large illegal aliens come from a third- world culture that does not value education, that accepts children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by 15 and that refuses to assimilate. We have an American culture that has become so weak and worried about being politicallycorrect that we don't have the guts to do anything about it.
CHEAP LABOR? Isn't that what the whole immigration issue is about? ·Business doesn't want to pay a decent wage. ·Consumers don't want expensive produce. ·Government will tell you Americans don't want the jobs.
But the bottom line is cheap labor. The phrase cheap labor is a myth, a farce, and a lie. There is no such thing as cheap labor, except for the businesses that employ these illegals.
Take, for example, an illegal alien with a wife and five children. He takes a job for $5 or $6 an hour. At that wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year, if he files an income tax return, he gets an earned income credit of up to $3,200.
He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent. He qualifies for food stamps. He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pa y) health care. His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school. His family requires bilingual teachers and books. He qualifies for relief from high energy bills. If they are or become, aged, blind or disabled, they qualify for SSI. Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicare. All of this is at the American taxpayer's expense. The illegal alien doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.
Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material. The illegal alien and his or her family receive the equivalent of $20 to $30 an hour in benefits. The average working American is lucky to have $5 or $6 an hour left after paying their bills and his.
Cheap labor? YEAH, RIGHT!
Wake up, people. THESE ARE THE ISSUES WE SHOULD BE ADDRESSING TO EVERY PRESIDENTIAL AND CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE, REGARDLESS OF THEIR OR OUR POLTICAL AFFILIATION. AND WHEN SOMEONE IS ELECTED AND LIES TO US, WE SHOULD RECALL OR IMPEACH THAT PERSON AT ONCE!
THIS HAS GOT TO BE PASSED ALONG OR THE AMERICA WE LOVE WILL GO DOWN THE DRAIN. MOST PEOPLE SEEM AFRAID TO BE POLITICALLY INCORRECT - TO RECOGNIZE AND ADDRESS THE TRUTH.
If this makes your blood boil, as it did mine, share this with others.
P.S. from Cate: Do you know that America actually imports most of her oil from Canada? And the second largest supplier of oil to America is Mexico?
WHY ISN'T THIS PROMINENTLY MENTIONED WHEN THE GODDAMNED NORTH AMERICAN UNION IS DISCUSSED?
It’s enough of a burden to bear have to put up with an egotistical, ignorant cowboy-wannabe in the White House. But now it seems that Bushitis is making rapid inroads in the White House administration at an unprecedented rate.
First we have Alberto Gonzales questioning the Constitutional right of Habeas Corpus. He presides over the entire judicial system of the United States. How secure are we in the commitment of our current government to our Constitution when the Attorney General of the country soars with senators over this implicit right that has stood as a beacon of judicial fairness for over 200 years?
Then, two brave border patrol agents were illegally prosecuted and jailed for trying to defend out country from the predatory incursion of a vicious drug smuggler.
IMHO, Gonzales should have been among the first to speak out against the fate of border agents Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos. These men have served in hazardous conditions with honor, and their “trial” was a farce of which the entire judicial system should be ashamed. Gonzales should be conducting a thorough investigation of the allegations made by three jurors that they were coerced into voting these men guilty, while the real criminal, Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila, who was transporting a van full of 800 lbs. of marijuana across the border from Mexico to the US, was given freedom and immunity to complain about being shot in his sorry butt. In addition, the concealing of the fact that this criminal had other charges pending was withheld from the jury as the pompous prosecutors demonized the men this country has empowered to put an end to these continuing violations of our safety and security. I’d give a handsome bon mot to know the extent of smuggler Aldrete-Davila’s US political payoff connections – connections that not only forgave his crimes but also resulted in a mockery of a trial that convicted and jailed the wrong men.
Now new allegations have emerged- charges that Gonzales and his minions conducted a witch hunt purge of prosecutors from the Department of Justice, apparently with lots of input from White House politicos.
And the revelations of the hitherto-unknown excesses of the internal spying carried out against Americans to ferret out possible "terrorist connections” are enough to cause one to look back over one’s shoulder to see if jack-booted militias are approaching to shine that government flashlight up everyone’s collective behind…hark back to Ben Franklin, and his wisdom in saying that those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither.
Alberto Gonzales has shown himself to be a self-serving toady to one of the most – possibly THE MOST- corrupt administrations in America’s history. Gonzales must go – now - before more and more of us find ourselves in the government spotlight wondering, “Why me?”
I have just been taken squarely to task about my stance on the proposed guest worker immigration reform policy by some members of the Democratic National Committee group.
Yes, although my views are generally middle-of-the-road to left of center, on this issue I part company with the liberal lockstep in the Senate. I will NOT follow my own senators, Chris Dodd & Joe Lieberman, along with Ted Kennedy, down this road to the butchering of the American working and middle classes.
I feel strongly that we will be opening a horrorshow of monumental proportions in the economic and social services arenas if we once again legitimize hundreds of thousands of illegals in a fell swoop the way we did in the 80's...I don't believe it is scapegoating to point out things that happen every day and have happened...fortunately never to me - so far! I would rather my taxes go to support and rehabilitate AMERICAN CITIZENS who need health care, employment, etc. We do a desperately poor job with them, you know.
Furthermore, those of you who support an open-door guest-worker program are sitting squarely in the capacious, rapacious pockets of BIG BUSINESS. Corporate America will be the ultimate victors in any program that keeps the flow of cheap labor streaming through a big welcoming pipeline. We will all pay for this...many will either lose their jobs or be forced to take pay cuts as imported labor willing to work for subsistence wages (or less) flood the system...this, as I am sure you know, is already happening. Our jobs are being stolen right here as well as being sold to the lowest international bidder willing to provide labor at a pay rate Americans cannot survive on. Our health care and educational systems, already on the brink of failure, will be pushed over the edge by a constant influx of aliens who have no health insurance and thus crowd hospital emergency rooms for ear infections, strep throat, etc. and the affected school systems will have to create either more classrooms (and very possibly build on to do so) or further crowd existing classrooms. Bilingual teachers will have to be hired to get students up to snuff in English. All children will be left behind as teachers struggle to educate too many in one place at one time. And, as much fault as I find with the current regime, America is my home and I am appalled that illegals are so quick to wave the flags of their own countries while telling us that we have an obligation to employ, house, teach and otherwise support them. Many of you will think I have become xenophobic or racist – not so! On this issue I am trying to take a wide rather than ideological view of this situation. I do have compassion for the poor and enslaved everywhere. However, this is not, dear friends, a tale about charity and compassion for the less fortunate of the world.
It is a tale told by an idiot - BUSH - full of sound and fury, and signifying the beginning of the end of the American dream for those of us who grew up believing that our government represented all of us, not just those with the most gold in their treasure chests - big business- or those - "guest workers" - who will provide the means to an evil end - no more American middle class. And when we are gone, absorbed into the great economic underclass that this administration is slowly and surely attempting to create, who will speak then for the poor and unfortunate?
IMHO, the powers that be want to wipe out the American middle class. If they have their way, the world will consist of the haves - the elite, who own and control everything - and the rest of us, workers slaving away just to get by.
The compromise bill mocked up by the Senate is full of entitlements that American citizens aren't allowed to have - health care, college tuition for immigrant kids at state schools - citizens from out of state can't get those subsidies - and other hidden goodies that the Senate made sure they didn't talk about publicly.
I don't have a perfect solution, but I know that the proposed bill is totally unworkable both monetarily and socially. We CANNOT reform immigration if we don't first strengthen and secure our borders. We need PEOPLEPOWER and LOTS OF MONEY to do this FIRST. Then MAYBE we can clear-headedly examine the possibilities for immigration REFORM and ENFORCING the laws that are supposed to prevent employers from hiring illegals in the ifrst place.
The INS is overwhelmed now. Do you really think we can find, enroll and monitor 11 to 20 million "guest workers"? I know we can't. Do you think illegals will be honest about their length of residence in the US? I know they won't. I can hear the forgers setting up the presses now - false documents will be the hallmark of this entire proposed process. Why should those who have waited and gone through the lawful steps to gain admittance to the U.S. be slapped in the face by America's embracing of people who broke the law (and stayed to drain our educational and health-care resources) to get here?
I resent being considered an isolationist or a bigot because I oppose the evisceration of the American middle and working class by politicans who want Latino votes and corporations who want people to work for $3.00 an hour. I resent uneducated, ignorant mobs being encouraged by fringe groups and radical Latino politicans to march in the streets dissing America, waving Mexican flags and otherwise spitting on the country they feel they are "entitled" to become a part of. Citizenship is NOT a RIGHT or a REWARD for having jumped over a fence - it is a privilege a foreigner EARNS legally.
Show me the jobs Americans won't do...if corporations paid a living wage - or even MINI(MUM wage - AND provided health benefits, you'd have to fight your way through the crowd of willing American working people who would be scrambling for ANY job that illegal immigrants take now.
I am in a towering rage at the thought of the "guest worker" bill passing and becoming law. While I am generally a liberal on most issues, I must diverge in this case and oppose extending a warm welcome to those who broke the law to enter our country and now expect to be rewarded for it.
I truly believe that the only reason there is bipartisan support for this idea is because BIG BUSINESS interests want to keep their greedy hands on cheap labor. God forbid that farmers, sweatshop owmers and construction companies should have to pay American citizens a living wage and provide them with BENEFITS for doing the work that illegals are hired to do.
I am opposed to the tax dollars of the middle class supporting illegals when they need health care etc. as well. Our government does a lousy job of taking care of our own down-and-out citizens and if I have to have my taxes spent on health care for others I would prefer them to be directed to our own poor and unemployed.
There is no "right" to be here for any group. I am offended when Latinos march shouting and carrying signs that reflect their love of Mexico. If they love Mexico so much they should stay their and not try to blackmail us into allowing them to do exactly as they damn well please regardless of the law.
Our livelihood as Americans is being given away to the rest of the world as it is and I don't agree that we need to allow millions of illegals to be welcomed with open arms to take more jobs away from Americans. Not only does this allow greedy employers to squeeze every dime out of labor for profit but it also drives down the market wages for the industries they work in.
I and many other staunch Democrats actively oppose the guest worker legislation and I will continue to write and speak out about it throughout the coming election season.
Please do not write to me telling me I am racist or isolationist. I simply truly believe it is time to take care of the American middle and lower economic strata before we distribute any more largesse to people who have broken the law to be here.
