A victim of an illegal abortion - taken in the bad old days.

Indiana is proposing a state law that says life begins at conception.

This law would augment the state's current "informed consent" law, that obliges doctors to discuss the process of abortion with a prospective patient before carrying out the procedure.

I'm sorry - this scares the SH*T out of me! I lived through and REMEMBER the days of illegal abortion - and as Spooks says - rich girls and women left the country to have a safe procedure done, and the poor were butchered. A college friend of mine told me she'd gotten pregnant when she was 17 and her parents took her to a medical clinic in the Caribbean for an abortion.

When New York legalized abortion in the early 70's, I helped my incredibly talented artist friend friend Jane - then 19 and crazy as a bedbug (she was not long after institutionalized for a time because she whacked her mother across the back with an axe; voices told her that her mother was an alien who could transform into a ham at will) - arrange an abortion in a clinic there because she couldn't have a clinical and clean procedure performed here in Connecticut. I myself am beyond the age of being concerned about pregnancy, but back then I would not have had an abortion. This didn't slow me down for a minute when it came to helping Jane try to maintain some semblance of a life before she went completely over the edge. (By the way, after a few episodic relapses - none of them violent -  and several years spent wandering around finding herself - she became a massage therapist and is today married and the mother of three sons).

I firmly believed, however - and still do - that it is a woman's right to choose. I also firmly believe that there are some people not fit or prepared enough to raise a child, and if they themselves recognize this these women should be allowed to end the pregnancy.

And now, in this age of early fetal diagnosis, we can tell when a fetus is afflicted with severe enough genetic problems that abortion would be a blessing rather than a sin. I would not want to give birth to a child with Tay-Sachs disease, for instance, and spend the child's entire young lifetime watching him or her suffer and die from a syndrome with no cure.

Just for a bit of edification:

What Is Tay-Sachs Disease?
Tay-Sachs disease is a fatal inherited disease of the central nervous system. The most common form of the disease affects babies. Affected babies appear healthy at birth and seem to develop normally for the first few months of life. After this time, development slows and symptoms begin. Sadly, there is no effective treatment for these babies. Babies with Tay-Sachs lack an enzyme (protein) called hexosaminidase A (hex A) necessary for breaking down certain fatty substances in brain and nerve cells. These substances build up and gradually destroy brain and nerve cells, until the entire central nervous system stops working. Symptoms of classical Tay-Sachs disease first appear at 4 to 6 months of age when an apparently healthy baby gradually stops smiling, crawling or turning over, loses its ability to grasp or reach out and, eventually, becomes blind, paralyzed and unaware of its surroundings. Death occurs by age 5.

So - put me in the column of protecting a woman's right to determine her own biological future. I cannot agree with very late partial-birth abortion unless necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman, but I hope the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade will not fall to the deceptive ideological will of a morally bankrupt political administration.
