Earthjustice: WOLVES IN PERIL

Oppose the Fish & Wildlife Service's misguided plan to remove gray wolves of the Northern Rockies from the Endangered Species List.
Send a comment now!
Send a comment now!
Dear COLLEEN,

Just as gray wolf populations in the Northern Rockies have begun to rebound from near-extinction, they face a new threat to their survival.

Several decades ago, gray wolves were ruthlessly hunted, trapped, and poisoned by state and federal authorities who considered them a nuisance. Protections they received under the Endangered Species Act and careful reintroductions to their former range enabled them to claw their way back.

But now, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed removing gray wolves from the endangered species list in the Northern Rockies, including Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, and Utah. The proposal hasn't yet been finalized, so in order to help them, we'll need to act fast. Public comments will be accepted only until May 9th.

If these critical protections are removed, the fledgling population of gray wolves in these states will be at the mercy of state governments that have made no secret of their desire to resume widespread wolf extermination campaigns. Just this past January, Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter declared that once wolves are de-listed, his state plans to kill all but 100 of the animals living there today.

Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to keep essential protections in place for wolves by sending a comment now - help us generate 20,000 comments before the May 9th deadline!

Earthjustice and supporters like you have worked hard to ensure that these majestic and iconic wolves were given a fighting chance to reclaim a small portion of their former range. We must not stand on the sidelines and watch as the U.S. government attempts to roll back the clock on wolf protections. Help keep Northern Rockies wolves from being de-listed and vulnerable to renewed attack.

Time is running out - we only have until May 9th to oppose the Fish and Wildlife Service's misguided plan to remove protections for the charismatic and intelligent gray wolves of the Northern Rocky Mountains.

Thank you for all you do to protect our natural heritage.

THE BOULEVARD HAS GONE TO THE DOGS 11:06 PM
INTERNATIONAL BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS HAS GONE TO THE DOGS. INTERESTING MATERIAL HAS BEEN SUPPLIED, NEITHER OF WHICH HAS BEEN READ OR COMMENTED UPON. IT WOULD APPEAR I AM "THE ODD MAN OUT."

BEING THE OPPORTUNIST THAT I AM, TOMORROW I SHALL OPEN A NEW THREAD. IT WILL BE FOR YOU TO LIST THE DONATIONS YOU HAVE MADE AS THE YEAR PROGRESSES, AND THE ANIMALS WHICH YOU HAVE ADOPTED FROM OUR ALERTS FOR THE WORK IN WHICH WE DO, AS WELL AS MEMBERSHIP TO VARIOUS NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. I HOPE THAT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SEARCHED IN THE ARCHIVES.

MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE THE ORIGIN OF A MESSAGE STEMS FROM ME, WHEN IN ACTUALITY I AM SIMPLY TRANSMITTING. IN RETURN, I RECEIVE MESSAGES STATING THE DONATIONS YOU EITHER HAVE MADE OR WILL MAKE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. WE WILL OPERATE UNDER "HAVE MADE" ONLY. RATHER THAN THAT OF GOOD INTENTIONS, WHICH, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, DO NOT REACH FRUITION.

SATISFACTORY?

YOU GO FIRST . . .

"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us, "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." : Albert Einstein - (1879-1955) Physicist and Professor, Nobel Prize 1921

AAF rescues 12 more Moon Bears, but it’s too late for two

3 bears waiting to be offloaded Jill Robinson with blind bear

Animals Asia Foundation (AAF) rescued 12 more Moon Bears, bringing to 217 the total number of bears saved from a life of torture on cruel bile farms in China.

But two of the emaciated bears brought to AAF’s rescue centre in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, were in such poor condition that they did not even live past their emergency health checks.

AAF founder and CEO, Jill Robinson, said today 9th November 2006, that these two bears had not died in vain. “They have left behind a legacy of vital information, which will bring this industry down,” she said.

Robinson, who has witnessed countless cases of severe animal cruelty over the years, said she was shocked by the condition of the 12 bears when they arrived at the sanctuary. “All were in impossibly small cages, all skeletal, wounded in various ways, and terrified of what would happen in this next stage of their lives,” she said.

“Two are blind, some missing limbs, some with shattered teeth, some with worn and scarred heads and bodies from bar-rubbing, and all out of their minds with fear. Most had open wounds in their abdomens from the free-drip method of bile-extraction, with some leaking bile and pus,” Robinson said.

In July 2000, AAF signed a landmark agreement with the Sichuan authorities to rescue 500 bears in the province, to work towards the elimination of bear farming in China and to promote the herbal alternatives to bear bile.

The farmers are compensated financially so they can either retire or set up in another business. Their licences are taken away permanently.

But many support the lucrative bear bile trade, claiming that a new catheter-free, free-drip method of bile extraction – involving the creation of a permanent hole in the abdomen – is painless for the bears and that the industry, therefore, is now “humane”.

Robinson, however, says the latest batch of tormented, disfigured bears provides further proof that the trade is as brutal as ever.

“We are still seeing young bears, with legs severed in leghold traps, that are clearly much younger than 17 years old – the cut-off point from when trapping bears in the wild was made illegal in China in 1989.”

Robinson said rake-thin “Twiglet”, one of the two bears that died shortly after his arrival at the rescue centre, weighed just 40 per cent of what a healthy male Moon Bear should weigh.

“We guess that, as often happens, because his free-drip wound had healed over, he had proved useless on the farm and the farmer had simply stopped feeding him, leaving him to starve to death,” she said. “His death from a combination of heart and renal failure, and our old enemy - septicemia - would have been agonising in the last lonely weeks of his life.”

“Message”, the other bear that died shortly after her rescue, succumbed to liver cancer as have 10 other rescued bears before her. Liver cancer is rare in bears that have not been tapped for their bile.

“A portmortem by AAF vets revealed pus in her bile – and this is the bile that people are paying to consume. We can see what it is doing to the bears – what must it be doing to humans?” Robinson said.

Consumers in China, Japan and Korea have the highest demand for bear bile. Bear parts, bile powder and bile products are also found in Australia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the US and Canada. It is illegal for bear products to be exported from China, but the black market trade is thriving. The bile is used in traditional medicine for a range of complaints including fever, liver disease and sore eyes. Synthetic and herbal alternatives are readily available.

Twelve months ago, the European Parliament in Brussels launched a campaign to urge the Chinese government to end bear farming by 2008 when Beijing will host the “Green” Olympics.

More than 7,000 bears are still trapped in farms throughout China. Some have been incarcerated for more than 20 years.

This was on DC indy media.

This week, seven activists in Los Angeles had their homes raided in
connection with a campaign against the POM Wonderful juice company,
makers
of POM pomegranate juice and Figi water.
POM has funded $10 million in research into the health effects of its
juice,
including conducting numerous studies on animals which included
inducing
erectile disfunction and depriving newborn mice of oxygen to the brain.
The
raids are yet another transparent attempt by the government to stifle
free
speech at the request of large corporations (POM is based in Santa
Monica,
CA, the town whose police carried out the raids) - and another sign of
just
how scared these animal-abusing companies are of being picketed,
protested,
and exposed for what they do. POM executives have stated in court
filings
that they have left their homes for up to a week at a time for fear of
being
demonstrated against, and the LA Times recently covered the campaign
and
mentioned POM's cruel torture of animals.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

This is on www.greenisthenewred.com

In yet another odd twist in this Green Scare, POM Wonderful, the juice
company, is using the scare tactics of the New McCarthyists to go after
one
of its core consumer bases: the vegan, natural foods set.

POM filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court last week,
saying
that a looming threat posed by illegal activism calls for banning
activists
from protesting and posting information about the company on their
websites.

If you’re totally confused right now, just wait, it gets more bizarre.
Here’s some background first: POM has built its juice empire by touting
the
health benefits of pomegranate juice on its website and in the press.
Activists are pissed because they say the company spends millions on
animal
research to showcase the health benefits of juice, all the while
branding
itself as a caring, natural foods company.

Animal testing for… juice? Activists say POM’s animal tests include
“lowering the brain oxygen levels in newborn mice to cause them brain
injuries and ‘forcing their mothers to drink water mixed with
pomegranate
concentrate,’” according to Jessica Garrison at The Los Angeles Times.

It looks like POM isn’t the first juice company to come under fire for
this.
Welch’s and Ocean Spray have both already caved to activist pressure.
But
POM doesn’t want to follow suit:

In their court papers, company officials say they believe the
protesters
are affiliated with the Animal Liberation Front, which the FBI has said
is a
domestic terror threat. And the company is fighting back, asking a
judge to
fine activists $1,000 if they post personal information about POM
employees
on websites. Company officials also want a judge to order activists not
to
picket or demonstrate outside the homes of the juice company’s
employees.

As POM admits, though, no employees have experienced any violence as
part of
this campaigning. At worst, employees have seen legal protests at their
homes, which can you can read more about on L.A. Indymedia.

And even if property destruction or threats had taken place, the
activists
responsible for those crimes should be prosecuted independently: POM
can’t
simply try to paint ALL protests of their business practices as
illegal. It
doesn’t matter if POM “believes” activists are affiliated with the
underground Animal Liberation Front, because that’s not grounds for
taking
away basic First Amendment rights. POM clearly wants to silence
activists
that expose their business practices, and is willing to go to great
lengths–
including this “eco-terrorist” scare-mongering– to do it.

It shows the danger of all this “eco-terrorist” rhetoric: it sets a
precedent for anyone to use green baiting to silence dissent, even a
juice
company targeting health-conscious vegan consumers.

Seal Alert-SA, 21 October 2006
Namibian Sealers 'Kill them ALL' as Seals Starve to Death,
Namibia quietly closes Fishery,
as Germany who will preside of the European Parliament,
bans all Seal Product Imports

No rescue. Namibia concealing its widespread seal starvation, whilst claiming over-population on a declining endangered seal species.
Whilst Namibia's annual nursing baby seal cull draws to a close on November 15, (in a practice banned since 1972 by the United States, the European Union in 1983, the sealing countries of South Africa, Canada, Greenland, Russia and Norway, and banned from import into Mexico, Croatia, Italy, Belgium, United Kingdom, Netherlands and now Germany) sealers report that the seal pup harvesting season has ended, (one month prior) as "there simply are not any more pups (to club and kill)".
Whilst Canada kills four times more seals (350 000), it does not kill 'nursing baby seals' and sets its quota at 30% of the pups in its 5/6 million seal population, whereas Namibia awards quotas that kill every pup (100%) that even with lengthened sealing seasons still cannot be filled on a seal population declining and suffering from repeated mass die-off's from starvation. Whilst CITES permits the detrimental international trade of this species, that the European Union continues imports.
Germany who once controlled the territory of Namibia and upon whom Namibia relies upon for its tourism, would do well to send a clear message to Namibia to end its sealing policy, as it takes over presidency in early 2007.
The 6000 bull shooting quota in 2006 for gentialia exports, will continue although sealers again describe the "bull seals are so weak they just lie on the beach, they are too weak to get up" (get shot where they lie).
What civilised country partakes in a so-called 'commercial sustainable harvest' of endangered and protected wildlife in nature reserves that involves rounding-up and clubbing to death baby seals already dying from starvation and too weak to move, and then charges tourist to view this wildlife splendour of the natural world, after the sealers have finished their morning killing spree?
This is an international crime against marine wildlife (there is no fair chase or sustainable harvest, and is barbaric, sadistic and cruel) that should not go unpunished by the international community. Francois Hugo of Seal Alert-SA appeals to other countries and its citizens to boycott Namibia's tourism, diamonds and fisheries, until Namibia ceases its sadistic and barbaric illegal sealing policy.
Aware that the Cape fur seal population had still not recovered from the 1994 mass die-off from starvation where one half of the seals starved to death (500 000 seals), and had since endure further mass die-off's in 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2001. Which had reduced the seal population by at least 50% in the last decade, and whose population in 2006, is at levels last seen in 1982.
Aware that prior to the start of the 2006 seal cull season that pups were already skinny. That Namibian researchers had revealed that long-term average growth of 30 grams/day, had declined to 2 grams/day, and that the majority of seal pups will not survive beyond post weaning age.
Acting Permanent Secretary Mr Amutse, on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Abraham Iyambo on the 10th July, stated in an official press release, that "Namibia must utilise all natural resources as long as it is done in a responsible and sustainable manner", and that, "the Seal stock in Namibia is currently in a healthy condition, according to the latest biological information", adding, "total number of pups at around 185 000 (1982 population level)".
Responding to public protests that Namibian seals are not healthy, nor is sealing sustainable, held outside the Namibian High Commission in South Africa and United Kingdom, Minister Iyambo "assured (Seal Alert-SA founder Francois Hugo) that Namibia will use the best scientific advice to sustainably and humanely harvest seals".
Proceeded to lengthened nursing baby seal pup season of 85 000 pups started on July 1 (previously August 1), in order to facilitate sealers reaching their full (scientifically set) quotas. Something that has not occurred yet since Namibia's independence in 1990, with sealers averaging 60% of their quotas. Although Seal Alert-SA advised the Ministry that this quota of 85 000 (20 000 more pups than in 2005), would see a total pup genocidal cull of all pups still alive by July 1, the Minister continued with the cull. A violation of the CITES convention as Cape fur seals are listed as endangered under Appendix II..
Whilst Stephen Lussier, the Executive Director of External and Corporate Affairs for De Beers, hopes to conclude its billions of dollars 50/50 partnership with Namibia in its Diamond Contract, the single largest contributor to Namibia's GDP by year end. Stephen Lussier also wrote to Francois Hugo of Seal Alert-SA in July, in which he stated, "I cannot help but be moved by the images you have seen", and "De Beers has a real commitment as a company both to the environment and to conservation" and "De Beers does not support any seal culling activities, and to be completely clear De Beers has no involvement whatsoever in the current cull in Namibia".
Reacting to media reports of seals crawling ashore and dying like flies all along the coast (the majority in the diamond restricted area), Permanent Secretary Ms Mbako in an official media release states, (aware that Mr Cilliers of Seal Products at Cape Cross had to stop his harvest to bury 900 seal pups that died in three days, in which no sooner were they buried, that another 900 seal pups died) that "total pups at Wolf and Atlas Bay are below a threshold of post weaning survival mass of 11 kg, the majority of the pups in the south will not survive (The De Beers diamond restricted area, where it was reported that Namibian Venison & Marine Products had a sealing quota of 38 000 pups)". Although this diamond restricted area bans access to the public, cellphones and cameras - sealers can go in and out, with clubs and knives daily.
In her attempt to explain away (on the 10th October) Namibia's 7th mass seal die-off from starvation, Ms Mbako completely fabricates pup population levels stated by her Minister of 185 000 (in July), by now declaring, "Recent scientific research has shown an increase of the seal population by more than 73% in the Namibian waters as compared to the 1993 estimates", falsely claiming seal pups now number 380 000 and are over populated. Stating, "This implies that the population numbers of these mammals have reached a stage where their current food source has become insufficient to sustain their livelihood".
Never in the history of official seal population surveys, has the Cape fur seals for both Namibia and South Africa ever exceeded 324 000 pups. The peak in the seal population in 1993, is less than 10% of pristine population levels, from which seals have still not recovered from near extinction from sealing in 1900.
Fabricating the seal pup population by an additional 200 000 pups or an additional 800 000 seals, as an excuse for Namibia's collapsed overfishing policies.
Whilst Deputy Director of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Kilus Nguvauva secretly closes all fish processing plants and orders October a no fishing month. Its intended purpose to allow fish stocks to recover (in one month). At first, the Ministry, "wanted two months, of October and November, but later we came to an agreement with the industry that there would be no fishing only in October".
Mr Nguvauva, then goes on to state, "Government blames the high seal colonies in some coastal regions for the dwindling fish stocks" and as a result, "has introduced a controlled seal-culling process".
Overfishing or culls have ensured that the last seal pup born in 2006, has either died of starvation or been clubbed to death, whilst suckling its mother in nursing and birthing breeding grounds (whose milking characteristics pose no threat to Namibia's fish stocks).
Sealers has "sustainably" killed every last seal pup, and still their quotas are some 40% short.
An international crime that should not go unpunished or ever be allowed to occur again. Namibia must immediately announce an end to its sealing industry or face serious international economic consequences.
South Africa stopped commercially killing the same species of seal (Cape fur seals) 16-years ago in 1990, Namibia must now do the same.
