Synopsis of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act Odette Wilkens, Esq.
Time: 3 PM
The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, just signed into law in November, 2006, seriously threatens the First Amendment rights of U.S. citizens to advocate for animals. Although the Act was ostensibly enacted to stem terrorism, it remarkably punishes acts of civil disobedience causing no harm or damage. Indeed, individuals participating in demonstrations, undercover investigations, whistleblowing, boycotts or even sending emails may potentially be criminalized under this Act. The Act also increases the government's wiretapping authority.
Bio: Odette Wilkens serves as Executive Director of the Equal Justice Alliance, a coalition of organizations working to repeal the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). She works with Congressional staff, attorneys, and social justice organizations on issues related to AETA. She is a member of the New York City Bar Association's Committee on Legal Issues Pertaining to Animals. She worked on the Comment issued by the New York City Bar Association disapproving AETA and distributed to the Congressional members of the House Judiciary Committee. She will be moderating the upcoming AETA symposium at the New York City Bar Association on May 22, 2007 and will be organizing the AETA symposium for the Animal Rights National Conference in July 2007.
