The Humane Society newsletter arrived this weekend, and in it was this photo of a raccoon dog, taken to the market in China. Thousands of raccoon dogs are being skinned at public markets in China, and their fur is being sold to clothing manufacturers.

Dear Friend of the Seals:
The recent petition we had on line was not acceptable by the Government of Canada. We now have a new petition on line and we are asking that everyone who signs, downloads the petition form and help us collect actual signatures.
We regret this inconvenience, but we must do what is best for the seals.
All relevant information is on the petition. Please read it carefully.
Kindest regards and many thanks for your help,
Earle Bingley
President,

Dear Friends of the Harp Seals:
Today, April 30th, the Canadian Voice For Animals and the Sea Shepherd Organization have launched an online petition to have the annual Canadian seal hunt cancelled for all time. This will not be an easy task, as we require at least 300,000 signatures of eligible voters in the next Canadian federal election.
Please note, you must be an eligible voter in Canada to sign this petition. Please forward to all of your Canadian Friends.
We ask that you post this petition's URL on your websites in the most opportune place where it can be easily accessed by your supporters. If we join as one, we can accomplish this momentous task.
Anyone who might care to be co-sponsors of this petition, please send your website's URL address to CVFA-Canada@telus.net and we will post it on the co-sponsor section of the petition document.
We thank you and are looking forward to an early reply,
Sincerely,
Earle Bingley

In the US we have seen animal enterprise lobbies persuade lawmakers to rewrite law in order to punish animal rights activists, most notably with the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, which includes language that threatens peaceful and legitimate forms of protest such as effective boycotts.

This week we see similarly troubling news from Australia. The International Herald Tribune website, February 26, includes an article headed, "Australia to help sheep farmers sue over wool boycotts."

It opens:
"The government plans to change federal law to help sheep farmers sue for damages over an animal rights group's peaceful campaign to prevent the sale of Australian wool, a government minister said Monday.

"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, are lobbying clothing chains and fashion houses to stop using Australian wool because they claim the sheep are subjected to cruelty.

"The U.S.-based group is opposed to mulesing - the slicing away without anesthetic of folds of skin from a merino sheep's rump to prevent maggot infestations.

"The practice is widespread in Australia, where farmers argue millions of sheep would otherwise die."

PETA naturally argues that the use of anesthetic would not kill the sheep, and that methods other than mulesing are available to control the infestations  -- the use of pesticides, for example.

We learn, "Under the current law, individual farmers have the option of suing PETA under federal commercial law for any losses and that the Treasurer hopes  "to change the law so that the federal competition watchdog - Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, also known as ACCC - could take legal action against PETA on behalf of a group of sheep farmers."

We read that Sen. Bob Brown, leader of the Greens minor opposition party, has expressed concern that "Taxpayers could end up paying the legal bills for companies acting in an ethically questionable manner."

You'll find the whole article on line at

You can send a letter to editor at letters@iht.com, up to 150 words at most.

Always include your full name, address, and daytime phone number when sending a letter to the editor. Please be sure not to use any comments or phrases from me or from any other alerts in your letters -- it is counterproductive as editors are looking for original responses from their readers and do not wish to publish campaign letters.

Also from Australia -- 2003 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, JM Coetzee, gave a speech in Sydney on February 22, an extract of which appeared on the website for The Age. Here are the opening paragraphs:

"To any thinking person, it must be obvious that there is something badly wrong in relations between human beings and the animals that human beings rely on for food; and that in the past 100 or 150 years whatever is wrong has become wrong on a huge scale, as traditional animal husbandry has been turned into an industry using industrial methods of production.

"There are many other ways in which our relations to animals are wrong (to name two: the fur trade, experimentation on animals in laboratories), but the food industry, which turns living animals into what it euphemistically calls animal products - animal products and animal byproducts - dwarfs all others in the number of individual animal lives it affects."

Hi Activists,

Ready to kick some butt for the animals in 2007?  Here's where you can start!

1.
Take Down Toonie Tuesdays at KFC

Location: KFC (1147 Davie Street, Vancouver)

Date:  Every Tuesday
Time:  6pm - 8pm
As usual, we will be outside KFC on Davie Street leafleting and giving out free vegan samosas to people who boycott KFC.  This is a friendly and fun campaign that's been really effective.  Prior to this campaign, KFC customers lined up out the door every Tuesday to get their cheap chicken (which by the way, is not really that cheap if you are homeless or truly poor).  But now, KFC is practically emptied of customers every time we are out there.  Our free vegan samosa giveaway attracts more customers than KFC - we even have repeat customers!
For more info please visit: www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com

2. bebe Stores Anti-Fur Outreach
Location: bebe Stores (corner of Robson & Burrard, downtown Vancouver)
Dates: Every Saturday & Sunday (throughout January)
Times: 3pm - 5pm
bebe sells horrendous things like fur-lined sweatshirts, fur coats, fur purses, fur key chains and fur hats. We've been out in front of this store for 4 - 7 days a week since November and we've had tremendous support and response from all types of people.  The most important support we've gotten is from people who simply are not aware of the issue.   This year, everyone seems to be wearing little bits of fur, yet few of them know the cruelty behind this useless product.  Our presence at this busy street corner is raising a lot of awareness and we are constantly thanked by parents, kids, shoppers, men and women for showing them the truth.  Come out and join us, it is a tremendously empowering and fulfilling experience.
For more info please visit: www.furisdead.com

3.  Semi-Nude Activists WANTED!!!
We are seeking semi nude activists for an upcoming fur demo.  You will be dressed in nothing except for fake blood, underwear and fake fur ears and tails.  The demo will be outdoors so only die-hard hot-blooded polar-bear types need apply.  What's in it for you?  All activists will get a free hot beverage from Blenz, and you might just be on TV looking super cute in your fake furry "outfits"!
All who are interested, please reply to this email before January 7th.

All outreach events are rain or shine.  Signs and leaflets are provided so just bring yourself and anyone you wish to invite.

Let's make 2007 a brighter year for the animals!

PETA, LIBERATION BC TEAM UP TO BRING MESSAGE OF COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS TO HOLIDAY SHOPPERS

For Immediate Release:
December 13, 2006

Contact:
Cassandra Curbelo 757-622-7382

Vancouver, B.C. -- What: Crouching in a cage, wearing donated fur coats drenched in fake blood, and holding signs reading, "Fur: No Skin Off Your Back" and "Fur: There’s No Excuse," four members of Liberation BC and PETA will protest in front of furry retailer Bebe in Vancouver on Thursday. Their point? To urge holiday shoppers to cross fur off their shopping lists and allow animals to share in the comfort and joy of the season.

Date:   Thursday, December 14
Time:   12:30 p.m.
Place:   Bebe, 1000 Robson St. (at Burrard)

Why are PETA and Liberation BC going to such great lengths to bash Bebe? Animals trapped for fur often languish in agony for days before they are drowned or bludgeoned to death. On fur farms, millions of foxes, minks, and other fur-bearing animals are confined to tiny, filthy cages, where stress often causes them to go insane before they are killed by gassing, poisoning, anal electrocution, or neck-breaking. An undercover investigation of a fur farm in China
the world’s leading fur producerrevealed that workers were slamming animals’ heads against the ground, leaving them panting, blinking, and conscious as they were skinned alive. Each year, millions of cats and dogs in China are strangled or bled to death; their fur is often deliberately mislabelled as fur from other species.

"We’re urging shoppers to help make fur a thing of Christmas Past," says PETA member Ashley Fruno. "By selling fur, Bebe is supporting one of the most hideous industries on the planet."
