Montgomery County Animal Resource Center Friday Update on Pit Bull Situation

Release Date
: Oct 27, 2006

1.  As a result of the intake of an additional 39 pit bulls, the Animal Resource Center has not euthanized any dogs due to space issues.  Because of the fantastic response of our animal adoption partners, the ARC has been able to send out all adoptable dogs, while fostering others with organized and private foster providers.

2.  The local partners that have helped include the Dayton Humane Society, SICSA, Miami County Animal Shelter, Greene County Animal Shelter, Butler County Animal Shelter and private and established breed rescue groups.  We can't thank these partners enough for helping us at this time.  Our adoptable dogs are at these locations, and if you are looking to adopt this weekend, we encourage you to visit these shelters.

3.  We have moved approximately 40 dogs out to local shelters and rescues in order to make room for the Pit Bulls.  More adoptable dogs are expected next week and the ARC encourages the public to look at our wonderful selection of adoption animals.

4.  Saturday's operations at the Animal Resource Center are limited due to the need to do medical evaluations on the Pit Bulls and reallocate them to more permanent housing.  No adoptions at the ARC will be conducted on Saturday, and owners looking for strays are encouraged to contact the ARC to help with location of their pet.

5.  None of the Pit Bulls from this case or the previous case three months ago (totally approximately 80 animals) are available for adoption.

6.  Health issues on the seized Pit Bulls run the gamut.  Some of the dogs are in good condition, others have many health concerns.  Some of the health concerns initially noted include scars, flea infestation, weight issues, mutilation and evidence of dog fighting.

7.  The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center is responding to this situation and is hoping for Montgomery County residents to bear with them during the next few weeks.  Residents wanting to offer help are encouraged to contact the ACR to sign up for volunteering.  Volunteer opportunities might include cleaning or assisting with non-dog related activities, or working with adoptable and stray animals.  Cash donations are desperately needed, as the seized animals have medical needs and are depleting medical funding resources allocated for adoptable dogs.  Large indestructible dog toys such as the Kong Brand are also requested, as the Pit Bulls are currently in need of distraction from their surroundings.
