Prey Model Raw (definition): Prey model

The "Prey model" diet attempts to simulate the proportions of an actual prey animal in a pet's diet, as dogs are actually carnivores. This includes organ meat, heads, skin, muscle, bone, blood and even small amounts of fur, feathers or scales, mimicking the amounts that would be consumed when eating small prey. Generally, the diet recommends 80% meat (including some 'meaty' organs such as heart), 10% bone and 10% organs (of which half is liver). The supporters of the prey model also focus on feeding meats from a wide variety of animals.

Supplements are generally not used in a prey model diet although some followers do add fish oil to the diet to compensate for the reduced amount of omega-3 fatty acid in commercially raised grain-fed livestock.[7]

Ok, now that that part is out of the way, i wanted to share our experience with PMR and why we feed this way!

Belle is a yorkie, and the breed is notorious for teeth issues, and sensitive stomachs and in some cases allergies... commercial dog foods are chock-full of fillers (pardon the redundance) corn and wheat are actually KNOWN allergens for dogs.

Belle's teeth are nearly perfect as noted by several vets and dog authors and afficionados alike!!... her skin and coat have never looked better and she has no stomach issues or allergies... at all!!! she's perfectly healthy and has been...

The staple of her diet is chicken (breast, thighs) and bones and organs as stated above (chicken feet and hearts are her fave!!) also we've recently added pork (NO bone, as it is too dense for little dogs) also we've tried lamb... we've yet to try beef, as it is somewhat harder to digest than chicken or pork for example.

Some FAQs:
i know you're wondering:
"I've always been told not to give dogs chicken bones"...
TRUE if the bones are COOKED they are likely to splinter and hurt the dog, but raw...they are ok. (for small dogs, only chicken bones, any others are too dense for their little teeth!)

can i feed kibble and pmr???
NOPE!-- dogs digest RAW food and K*bble differently... so feeding both at the same time would cause the doggy to get sick

what is the difference between prepared raw such as nature's variety and PMR???
prepared raw patties are ground. benefits of PMR stem from the actual ripping and chewing of the food (aside from the nutritional content) the ripping action and chewing on the bone is what cleans their teeth...

disclaimer: i am in no way a professional, just a dedicated yorkie owner who feeds this way, i will be happy to answer questions but ultimately it is your choice and responsibility.

you can do a google search for prey model raw...there is lots of info on the net...this is just a brief intro
