Alert: PLEASE HELP HEIDI'S LEGACY ANIMAL SHELTER
Focus: Animal Welfare
Action Request: Other
Location: United States

I'M FORWARDING THIS ON FOR A FRIEND OF MINE WHO CARES DEEPLY ABOUT THIS CAUSE.  PLEASE VOTE FOR THIS ANIMAL RESCUE TEAM!  LET'S ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND HELP THEM IN THEIR ONGOING EFFORT IN SAVING ANIMAL'S LIVES....

Please vote for Heidi's Legacy they are the hardest working rescue & rescuers I know. All the animals I have submitted to you, who have needed help, have been helped by Heidi's Legacy & you. Please check out the list of animals they now have up for adoption. Now these babies are safe but still need a forever home. Yes, this rescue is one I take very seriously and totally support with all my heart. This rescue sent my Honey via hugs at a time, I didn't want another dog, how do you take another when you've had the best? Nikki Kaye was my soul mate and I still miss her, but Honey came at a time when my Sydney (granddaughter) really needed that human animal bond.  When Honey came here I knew this was meant to be (a sign from God) knew she needed to be here.  (and I'd get Lori later  Honey's story is very remarkable. She was set to be killed and I wrote Lori stating Lori the eyes are talking to me. You know how I get when they're talking to me.  They went to save two dogs that day but were too late to save Janice, she'd just been put down and they had the needle ready for Honey. Two days later she arrived here. I wanted her saved,,, I had no idea Lori was shipping her here I took her thinking I could find her a good home here, but first, this poor soul had lived her first year of life in a stupid crate. She wasn't potty trained, I can't tell you now how many pillows she ate. (ooops Steve still doesn't know about the Purdue pillow Didn't know what a leash was. She had zero training. And at 1 year old it took longer and many more patience. Finally got her all set to go and every single person that came to see her, she either insulted them by hiding behind me or making a bee line for the house.  This little dog wasn't going anywhere at the great displeasure of my feral cats.  Watching Sydney and Honey together I realized why she had been sent here, & we took fate as it had been dealt to us and just kept her (since she had no intentions of leaving anyway Honey has been with us for 1 year and 1 month now and is rotten & spoiled just like Sydney now. Both abused at one time now are safe & together. Thank you Lori for your insight and Heidi's Legacy (where Lori works)

Please I beg of you vote for this rescue so more babies can be saved.

Alert: Situation worse for Lipizzaner horses! These horses are dying! please help!
Focus: Animal Welfare
Action Request: Donation
Location: Bosnia And Herzegovina

PLEASE! These horses are dying NOW!!!! Read this update, Make a donation (even a small one will help! YOU CAN NOW DONATE VIA PAYPAL OR BY CHEQUE OR BANK TRANSFER and sign the petition.

(At the latest count, 560 people have signed the petition, this is wonderful, but the horses will die without funds to help NOA rehabilitate them!!)

Very Important Update on 90 starving horses at Vucijak Farm, Bosnia:

The situtation for the starving horses at Vucijak Farm has worsened. We already know that 3 poor foals have died but there are also 4 foals in a critical condition, we have just had this update from NOA:

At the time of NOA's last assessment, 4 foals were in critical condition, and will be unlikely to recover in the conditions at the farm. Bad news is expected for these foals. There are also grave concerns for mares in foal close to their due date. NOA have been waiting for a grant from WSPA which would have allowed them access to care for the horses 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately the banks have had administrative problems and the grant has not yet been received.

Further problems have been reported today 28 May 2008 which could take a further week to resolve. Add to this the fact that the temperatures in Bosnia are currently ranging from 31-36 degrees centigrade and will only get hotter. NOA had planned to have access to the farm before the temperature rose to these levels, but due to the administrative errors, the horses will be left to suffer and starve in the heat for another week without any help. Even when the grant from WSPA finally arrives, it will not be nearly enough to care for these animals for any more than a short time.

Last Angel Equine Defence has set up a fund for the Vucijak Farm horses via Paypal. Please! Donate any amount you can! These horses are dying. Now!!
Thank you

Help Save Starving Lippizanner Horses at Vucijak Farm Petition

90 Lipizzaner Horses at Vucijak Farm in Bosnia are being kept in appalling conditions, suffering from starvation and fatigue. The horses are dying. These horses need our help urgently. Three foals have already died due to starvation and conditions at the farm more are expected to die in the days to come.

For more impact, please send an email to the UK and USA ambassadors to Bosnia. A sample email and details of how to donate funds to help the horses is here:

Emergency Appeal for Horses at Vucijak Farm

The managment of farm, its staff, was starving horses on purpose,  keeping them in the bad condition for years systematically in order to be able to attract donations and aid that would then "dissapear" without trace. On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture of Republika Srpska was the perfect ministry for the money laundry of the Republika Srpska yearly budget funds, the money  would end up in the hands of ruling leadership without incriminating traces or evidence. Moreover, the farm Vucijak was important part in this money laundry scam since it was on the budget list of the ministry.

"Out of 80 millions KM, 60 millions KM will dissappear in the hands of politicians..." - citation of insider.

Hence, while the farm managment did their scam, starving and neglecting the horses and trying to lure the donations in, keeping the farm in constant need of aid and assitance.   The ministry could not do anything to prevent it or help the horses because then the farm managment could talk and reveal the money laundry scam of the ministry,( the farm staff would talk).</font>

Message: A Lovely Horse Story of Molly - Finally Something Good!!

Meet Molly. She's a gray speckled pony who was abandoned by her owners when Katrina hit southern Louisiana , USA   . She spent weeks on her own before finally bein g rescued and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier, and almost died. Her gnawed right front leg became infected and her vet went to LSU for help. But LSU was overwhelmed, and this pony was a welfare case. You know how that goes.

But after surgeon Rustin Moore met Molly, he changed his mind. He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides so she didn't seem to get sores, and how she allowed people to handle her. She protected her injured leg. She constantly shifted her weight, and didn't overload her good leg. She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.

Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee and a temporary artificial limb was built. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there.

'This was the right horse and the right owner,' Moore insists.

Molly happened to be a one-in-a-million patient. She's tough as nails, but sweet, and she was willing to cope with pain. She made it obvious she understood (that) she was in trouble. The other important factor, according to Moore , is having a truly committed and compliant owner who is dedicated to providing the daily care required over the lifetime of the horse.

Molly's story turns into a parable for life in post-Katrina Louisiana . The little pony gained weight, her mane felt a comb. A human prosthesis designer built her a leg.

The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life, Allison Barca DVM, Molly's regular vet, reports.

And she asks for it! She will put her little limb out, and come to you and let you know that she wants you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take it off too.' And sometimes, Moll y gets away from Barca. 'It can be pretty bad when you can't catch a three-legged horse', she laughs.

Most important of all, Molly has a job now. Kay, the rescue farm owner, started taking Molly to shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers. Anywhere she thought that people needed hope. Wherever Molly went, she showed people her pluck. She inspired people. And she had a good time doing it.

'It's obvious to me that Molly had a bigger role to play in life', Moore said,   'She survived the hurricane, she survived a horrible injury, and now she is giving hope to others.'

'She's not back to normal,' Barca concluded, 'but she's going to be better. To me, she could be a symbol for New Orleans itself.'

Alert: MAKE A NOISE CAMPAIGN-PROTECTING HORSES WORLDWIDE
Focus: Animal Welfare
Action Request: Petition
Location: United Kingdom

Please Sign the Petition
http://www.ilph.org/makeanoise/petition.html

We are launching Make A Noise because of the shocking realities of this trade. Read on to find out more.

Rules and regulations

In January 2007, the European Commission updated legislation and produced a new document: EU Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport.

During the drafting process the ILPH and other welfare organisations, suggested ways in which it could be improved. Several important changes relating to horses were introduced, which include:

  • Unbroken or unhandled horses are now not permitted to be transported for more than eight hours (a journey of more than eight hours is classified as ‘long distance&rsquo
  • Horses undertaking long distance journeys must travel in individual compartments on the lorry

Furthermore, the Regulation states that:

  • Horses must be fed and watered after eight hours of travelling
  • • Horses must be rested off the lorry for 24 hours after every 24 hours of travelling
  • All animals must be fit for travel and transport should not cause them additional suffering

Our field trip in August highlighted the fact that this Regulation is regularly ignored. Jo White, Director of Campaigns and Communications, and Campaigns Officer’s Emma Seel and Caroline Heard, were able to collate up to date footage to add to the ILPH’s dossier of evidence, which will be presented the European Commission.

During the course of one week they witnessed the shocking reality of the trade eight months after the laws were updated:

  • NO lorries with individual partitions. Horses were travelling in mixed groups of six, seven and eight, meaning a lorry designed to carry around 16 horses was carrying up to 30. The ILPH has had more extreme reports from welfare organisations based in Spain who see dangerous levels of overstocking regularly.
  • Lack of partitions caused fighting, which lead to injuries – especially to smaller horses. Click on Emma’s 1st Field Trip to read Caroline’s account of a yearling blinded by the conditions it was forced to travel in.
  • Few lorries were stopping to feed and water horses after eight hours meaning most horses were unloaded from lorries in an extremely dehydrated state – so much so you can actually see the skin wrinkling.
  • Lorries were also failing to stop and rest the horses off the lorry after 24 hours of travelling time. As a result horses could be staying on the lorry for up to four days.

MOST importantly, we must get journey times back onto the political agenda:

  • Horses that had travelled for six hours under the legal limit were collapsing due to extreme exhaustion. This is why we must get journey limits back on the political agenda

For a copy of Defra’s ‘Welfare of Animals During Transport – advice for transporters of horses, ponies and other domestic equines’ please e-mail: campaigns@ilph.org or telephone 0845 955 6000 quoting reference: PB12544C

Italy drives demand

Italy is the biggest importer of live horses for slaughter, with 84% of horses travelling through Europe for slaughter heading there. Journeys sometimes take more than 100 hours; horses are permitted to stay on the lorry for 24 hours without rest, but poor enforcement means this is often exceeded. The horses travel in extreme weather conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees centigrade and plummeting to minus 30.

Source countries: the dark secret of Britain’s favourite holiday destination

A worrying new trend has emerged in Europe’s horsemeat trade. Despite the decrease in numbers of horses travelling long distances to slaughter, one exporting country has steadily increased the numbers of horses it transports to Italy for human consumption. Britain’s favourite holiday destination, Spain, has emerged as one of the three biggest exporters of horses for slaughter to Italy. Whilst numbers are progressively decreasing from Poland and Romania (although they still remain the two major suppliers, Poland being the largest with over 20,000 horses leaving for slaughter), live exports from Spain have been on the increase since the mid-nineties. According to recent research carried out by Emma Leckie on behalf of the ILPH, (visit ilph.org to read a summary) over 10,500 horses were transported for slaughter from Spain to Italy in 2006. During the research, which is her fourth report for the ILPH and was completed in June, Emma found that transporters taking horses on journeys that last more than 24 hours actually lose money if they adhere to the new EU Regulation 1/2005. Jo White, Director of Campaigns and Communications for the ILPH comments: “Emma’s research confirms that enforcement of these new laws is completely inadequate. We know that illegal journeys are still taking place, where transporters are not stopping at feeding and watering stations and failing to install partitions so that they can pack more horses into lorries. These actions are direct contraventions of the new Regulation and horses are needlessly suffering to increase profits. Emma’s report backs up what we are seeing in our field research.” “We hope the findings of this research will add new impetus to the argument that the trade should be ‘on the hook’ rather than ‘on the hoof’” explains Emma. “Researching this industry is harrowing since every statistic represents a horse that has been subjected to a stressful journey, only to be slaughtered at the end of it. The economics of this trade clearly demonstrate the advantages of abolishing live transport and reverting to a carcase only industry.”

What has your support helped us to achieve?

The good news is that your support has helped the ILPH and other welfare charities to achieve a significant drop in the number of horses being transported to slaughter in Europe. In 2001 there were 165,000 horses involved in long distance transportation. With your help, this number has dropped by more than a third, to less than 100,000. The pressure you helped us put on the EU with your letters asking them to improve conditions for horses travelling to slaughter made them understand the importance the issues raised. As a result the EU Commission consulted the ILPH on the new laws dictating the conditions under which animals are transported and included some of our recommendations.

What happens next?

The ILPH is currently compiling evidence ready to present to the European Commission in 2009 for the review period (2009-2013). During this review period we will constantly be lobbying the EU Commission for our recommendations to be implemented. It is essential that we get journey times back on the agenda in 2009 so that we don’t miss this vital opportunity.

The ILPH has a window of opportunity that will take us closer than ever to ending the long distance transport of horses to slaughter in Europe. Today, we need you to commit to join us and Make A Noise so please click on Become a Campaigner and register your support. You, our loyal supporters, your friends, family and work colleagues can become an active part of our campaign to end the long distance transport of horses to slaughter.
