Our current electrical energy supply in America is nearly 50% supplied by coal. This coal comes mostly from two locations in America, in Wyoming's Powder River Basin, and Appalachian Mountain Range of Kentucky, Virgina, West Virgina and Tennessee. Coal mining in the Appalachians is done by mountain top removal. Smithsonian Magazine, January 2009 has an extensive article discussing mountain top coal removal.

Mountain top removal is just that and covers hundreds of square miles the Appalachian Range. This is done to expose thin layers of very low sulfur coal. These layers of coal are to thin to approach by traditional underground mining practices. Low sulfur coal is highly prized in steel mills. Mining this way destroys mountains and valleys and most all that lives there. Everything that lives in and around the mines is negatively effected. The coal and mountain are mined using 20 story tall drag lines, attached to the energy grid, moving 120 tons at a time, loaded into huge trucks, burning huge amounts of diesel fuel, processed, loaded onto trains, burning huge amounts of diesel fuel, than dropped at an electrical generation plant, pulverized and burned. Burning coal releases huge amounts of airborne pollutants, increasing global warming.

Everything involved in coal mining is negatively impacting our environment. As this is a global warming discussion group, this is very relevant. The forest in Appalachia is one of natures most bio diverse forests it is important to put this out to members and readers here. Consider how your electricity is generated, and what your options are for getting your electricity from clean sources. What are you personally doing to lessen your carbon footprint? The more action we take personally, as well as in our communities the greater our influence becomes.
