Here are the dogs on the list to be euth'd tomorrow morning that we don't have a back up plan for:

WILLIE: Neutered, male, white husky, 4-5 yrs old, was a stray. Great on leash, wonderful temperament, likes to trot around, gives kisses, rolls on back for belly rubs. Very thin and staff said they saw him have a seizure shortly after he arrived. They are not willing to spend money to diagnose him

RILEY: He was originally adopted from shelter when he was 2-3 months old. He is a neutered male, 7 months old now. They surrendered him because he didn't get along with their two jack russell terriers. He has been through puppy obedience training and knows several commands. He likes kids and cats.

SCOOBY: 4 yr old, neutered male, Beagle/Cocker Spaniel mix. Wonderful temperament and likes dogs and cats but surrendered because he started occasionally growling at family's 3 yr old toddler and then last week the toddler fell on him. When that happened, Scooby nipped him on his lip and made it bleed. I don't have a picture yet (no time!) but he is a very attractive small dog. Approx 30 lbs.

NO PICTURE AVAILABLE!!!

********************************************************* KAMBIRI IS
AN AWESOME DOG!*****KAMBIRI IS AN AWESOME DOG!*****KAMBIRI IS AN
AWESOME DOG!*****GET IT??!!***** Call me (Jen, the volunteer) at
860-460-7171 or the ACO at 860-873-5044. You are really missing out if
you don't meet Kammi! She is a loving, sweet companion who enjoys
women, men, children and other dogs. Even though she lives in the dog
pound she gets to do regular dog stuff and is always trying out new
things like going to Dairy Queen, Petco, Pet Smart, doggy events and
running general errands. Kambiri has learned sit, paw, down and comes
when you call her name. She's confident and nothing bothers or phases
her--not even lightning and thunder. She goes out on car rides a
couple times a week. She loves drive-thrus! Kammi also gets walked,
baths, dresses up in outfits, visits inside houses where she's a
perfect angel, etc. She is great in every situation and wants to make
friends with almost every dog she meets. Kammi kinda plays "ruff" and
bounces off other dogs--some dogs like it and some don't. She really
is a great girl though. She had an awesome time playing with a big
chocolate pit/lab mix in Old Saybrook one day named Sampson. He's a
big, loveable lug that liked bouncing around with her--they really hit
it off! She also hung out with Eve, a black chow mix from the Old
Saybrook Dog Pound and they enjoyed each other's company as well. They
shared a cool beverage and some snacks together. What are you waiting
for--at least come and meet her. It's a shame a dog this wonderful is
wasting her life at a dog pound! April 9th she went to a doggy event
and sported her fuzzy bunny ears and loved it. How many dogs will
happily and willingly wear bunny ears? Kambiri went to a doggy event
in Oakdale, CT in February. One lady commented on how much Kammi lit
up when-ever a child was around. (See picture with her feather
boa--Kambiri loves to be dressed up in outfits!). Absolutely everyone
there commented on what a nice dog Kammi is--including multiple animal
control officers, rescuers, volunteers and the visitors at the event.
She was loving, warm, well-behaved and inviting to everyone--well,
maybe the cats didn't appreciate her. . . Everyone else got a kick out
of her red feather boa--and how accepting she is of being dressed up!
She simply gets overlooked because she comes with the pitbull "label"
which is really a shame because she is just the nicest dog--obviously
a mixed breed so it's not like she's a big diesel buffed out dog.
Kambiri is a cutie--she's a sweet, playful tender-hearted girl. She's
affectionate, pleasant and attentive--so nice to have around! She's a
mother's helper type that likes to stick by your side as opposed to
going off and playing without you. Kambiri's name is Nigerian meaning
"allow me to join this family". She's spayed, up-to-date on her rabies
and distemper combo shots, heartworm negative (and taking monthly
preventative) about 55 pounds and about 3 years old. Kammi's a gentle
walker. She wags her little tail so much, sometimes I think it might
go flyin' off! She loved hanging out, playing and walking with
Ralph--a big lab mix but he got adopted. They used to play together in
the play yard and went on walks together while being walked by one
person--yep two dogs at once. She seems to favor male dogs that have
that duhhh. . .dumb as a box of rocks, jock-look on their face and
stare at her as if to say, "what do you want to do next" but a low-key
female might work out too since Kambiri has enough bounce for two dogs
when she gets playing. Since she can get bouncy, she and any bouncy
dog is better suited for households with larger children that won't
get knocked over. Kambiri's just looking for someone to love her
forever! She's only met a couple cats but seems too excited when she
sees them so we want her to go to a house without cats. By the way,
she's excellent in the car and loves taking baths. If you are an
over-the-top pet owner, own a home in CT (or somewhere close to CT)
call 860-873-5044 or email
Kambiri@aol.com
. After adopting Kambiri,
bring her to Jody Humble at Country Dog Grooming for her complimentary
grooming!******October 2nd update: Kambiri went to Pumkins for Pooches
in Colchester. Everyone loved her! She was such a hit! Kambiri was
wearing an orange and chartreuse dragon costume (seen in picture)
which didn't even phase her to wear. We were there for four hours with
her dressed up in the costume as we stopped to talk to everyone. It
was crowded and noisy with tons of people and dogs. Kambiri had a
blast! She really didn't seem to know what to make of tiny
dogs--they're just too animated for her. She really enjoyed dogs more
her size and even played with a few. I was so pround of my Kambiri
because she was such a good girl all day! I wouldn't expect anything
else from her because she's always a good girl!*****October 30th
update: Kambiri went to WVIT Channel 30 and was the featured pet. She
did great! She was so well-behaved and wore her Howl-ween costume with
pride--even the hat! Then, we went to Petco together--what a good
girl! December 10th: Kambiri and Ralph went on an outing in the car
together--what a pair! They are just the best dogs!! Ralph instantly
went into the snooze mode and slept the whole way. Kambiri sat like a
little lady watching the sceenery go by. They went to visit the Old
Saybrook Animal Control Officer who just loved them! She thought they
were both so sweet and well-behaved. She was also impressed with how
well they got along together! Since then, Ralphie has been adopted.
Kambiri and I went to visit him in Old Saybrook at Debbie's Dog
Grooming--boy was she happy to see her friend. Debbie is Ralph's (now
called Quinn) new Mom. He goes to work with Debbie and his new brother
Vincent! Give us a call or email. Kammi is so sweet. You'll love her!

PLEASE READ MY STORY AND CROSSPOST IT...MY TIME IS UP...I NEED A GOOD HOME NOW!

It's been almost 2 weeks now since I was picked up from a subdivision in South Fulton County which is currently being developed.

The man who brought me home is a builder. I had appeared in this subdivision about 6 weeks before he brought me home. During those
weeks, Loren brought me food and water. I never left the spot where he first discovered me. My days were spent sadly looking down the road.  No one knew what I was looking for or waiting for. Perhaps I thought the person who abandoned me would return for me?

Hot sun or rain wouldn't make me leave my spot, so Loren built a lean-to shelter over me to help protect me from the elements. My shyness began to dissipate somewhat and I would lift my head from my little shelter when I heard Loren's truck approach every day. I have a funny way of
raising my head with one ear lifted and one down that Loren thinks is comical-- he called me a meercat, because I reminded him of the animals
on the show "Meercat Manor."

After living a lonely existence in the subdivision, Loren couldn't stand it anymore and brought me home to Cobb County. He didn't really have a
plan, he just knew I needed a better life.

I'm happy in a secure backyard (my current temporary quarters are surrounded by a privacy fence) and I have shade and water. I'm fed
twice daily and have put on weight.

My rescuers cannot keep me. They already have 4 dogs of their own and their neighborhood's H.O.A. says they can have no more than that. 2 of the dogs they have are rescue dogs, and they'd rescue hundreds if they
were able. They just can't.

So now they're trying desperately to find a home for me. Unfortunately, I've growled at the dogs currently living here, so I have to be kept separate from them. Loren thinks it might be fear and the result of being abused, neglected and confused. I don't seem to be a fighter and
I've never shown the slightest tendancy towards human aggression.

I'm alone all day, since both of the humans at this home work full-time jobs. The other dogs are confined to the house during the day (one of
them in a crate, since she's still a big puppy and would chew the house to bits if she were loose). When the dogs are let loose in the backyard, I have to be put into a backyard crate while they do their business.

I need a home where I can just be *me*. I'm sure I'd be a wonderful pet for a family that currently has no dogs. I love humans and will shower you with kisses, tail-wags and complete adoration.

Please allow me a chance to live. I will be going to a shelter this week, and my fate is uncertain. My rescuers are heartbroken, but they're trying to give me a chance. They're willing to have me fully vetted if someone will take me.

Contact Loren or Linda at home: (770) 420-1844 or Loren's cell: (404)
348-7545 or Linda @ work: (770) 528-2122.

I'd love to fill your life with love and gratitude ~~ I just need a chance.

Signed:

Caboose

Kim Davino Garcia

Home: (860) 491-3711
Work: (860) 866-0000

Hi All! I wanted to share the following with you...
On 4/7/06, a couple visited our shelter to complete an adoption application for one of our pit mix puppies.
The contact information that they listed on their adoption application is listed above.  This couple talked a
good talk, said most of the right things.  They said that they were very experienced owners and were also
interested in fostering for us -- in particular, they love pits.
They claimed to have a horse rescue on their property in Goshen, CT and also claimed to foster for Goshen
Animal Control.  That caught my interest, so I asked a few questions, engaged them in conversation.
She described several kennels that she has on the property. She described a nice rural farm environment,
but wouldn't elaborate much on the daily routine that she would expect for a dog in her care.  Sounded like
they would be outdoors in a kennel enclosure most of the time.  She claimed that she has fostered and
adopted many dogs into loving homes.  She asked that I contact Goshen ACO for a reference.  I got a bad
vibe from them, in spite of the fact that they said a lot of the things that I normally like to hear.  I didn't want
to judge them off the cuff, so we did the vet check --  the vet had no records for her.  I called Goshen Animal
Control and the officer I spoke with said that he couldn't understand why they would mention his name -- the
only contact he has had with these people is removing horribly neglected animals from their property.  No
surprise here -- obviously, they didn't make the adoption cut with us.
Just today, I got a call from the assistant ACO in Middletown.  Turns out this couple is still looking for dogs --
they had contacted Middletown a few days back and attempted to adopt or foster a deaf pit/ambull mix that
they have available for adoption.
This time, she used the name Kim Davino (dropped Garcia from her name) and told a similar story.  During their
first conversation with her (I think during a phone call) she said that she operates a rescue in Goshen and
specializes in Pit Bulls.  She also claimed to have experience working with deaf dogs.  When she spoke with animal
control a second time, they asked a lot of questions about the setup of her property and Kim changed her story,
stating that she isn't an "official" rescue and hasn't actually worked with any deaf dogs, but that she is willing to
learn about working with them.  Needless to say, that adoption fell through.
I think it might be good to get the word out about these folks.  There's something very wrong here and I'd hate to
see any more animals in their care.  They are obviously looking for pits and pit mixes and god only knows what
situation these poor animals are going into on their property!
Warm Regards,

Susan Lydem

UPDATE 6/1/06: Supreme Court Decision
Supreme Court Judge Davis ruled against us.  We are awaiting the Appellate Court’s ruling on the Stay of Execution.

We still need to keep contacting the Town of Hempstead asking for

Email addresses and phone/fax numbers are listed below.

Thank you!

TOMORROW ON MAY 31, THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD, NASSAU COUNTY, NY WILL KILL THE ENGLISH BULLDOG PUPPY IF WE DON'T STOP THEM

Who's Duke?
A one-year old little English Bulldog Puppy.

Why will he be killed?
His owner, Lawrence Kelly, let him run loose with two Rottweilers who bit a little boy. This terrible thing happened on April 28. Kelly gave the Town of Hempstead ownership of all his dogs so they could kill them. The Town of Hempstead is charging Kelly with three counts of having an unleashed dog and three counts of having unlicensed dogs. Kelly pleaded not guilty. He will receive justice in court.

Why do the Nassau SPCA, Long Island Bulldog Rescue, and thousands of Long Islanders including many people from Nassau County and Hempstead, in particular -- want to stop Duke's execution?
It is not clear that Duke bit.
Bulldogs are calm, gentle dogs that get along with everyone. They are patient and loving with children. They are not property protectors. (ASPCA, 1999, p. 136.)
Long Island Bulldog Rescue (LIBR) and Nassau SPCA want justice for Duke, too. They have asked that an unbiased, expert dog temperament evaluator test Duke AT NO COST TO THE TOWN OR COUNTY to see if he has the temperament to live a safe, happy life. If so, Nassau SPCA and LIBR assures he would be placed out of New York State, AT NO COST TO THE TOWN OR COUNTY.

Who should care?
Every person who:
§ Owns a pet in Hempstead or Nassau or anywhere.
Could your pet be next if your neighbor accuses him or her?
§ Lives in Nassau or Hempstead and everywhere.
Could you be next if your neighbor accuses you?
§ Believes that our country, county, and town are strong because we are ...
§ compassionate and fair, not because we are cruel and unfair.
§ Knows that the Town of Hempstead has been a progressive precedent- setting leader in many areas and wants that tradition to go forward.

Why does Duke's life or death matter to every Hempstead and Nassau County resident?
o Duke could have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time. Nassau County, and Hempstead, should be the right place at every time, so all residents are safe from being punished for something they didn't do.
o A society is judged by the way it handles those least able to take care of themselves. Duke can't take care of himself. His family neglected and abandoned him. Hempstead and Nassau residents don't blame or punish babies and puppies for the actions of adults.
o Dogs have a long tradition of saving people. Here's our chance to return the favor.

Nassau County is a place where people come to live the American dream. It takes teamwork to make the dream work. Keep that dream alive. Promote justice for Duke. TELL THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD SUPERVISOR AND COUNCIL MEMBERS THAT DUKE THE ENGLISH BULLDOG PUPPY DESERVES THE CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF. GRANT LI BULLDOG RESCUE STANDING TO ADVOCATE FOR DUKE TO HAVE HIM TESTED. If he is dangerous, he will be destroyed. If he is not dangerous, someone outside New York State will adopt him and give him a safe, happy life.

1. Call and e-mail Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town Council

Politely tell them that you demand Duke be temperament tested, and to stop wasting tax payers money on fighting to kill him.
